this sewing pattern just touched me while i was in the middle of reading it
Mad Men REALLY expecting me to care whether roger lives or dies
Literally nothing a tv show character from 15 years ago loves more than to be a bail bondsman/woman
lie to me
In my opinion hotels should be decorated in the kitschy midmod style. Like if you just do it earnestly it doesn’t look cheap and rundown it looks so much better than everything being that grey resin wood texture
The secretaries should have killed don draper with hammers in my view
I think the last season goes a bit too far but one of stranger things’ most inspired decisions was making Karen like this actually nice character who is understanding of her son’s weird behaviour
There’s a certain level of attractiveness that just becomes annoying to me.. like we get ittt
they killed him for this
Aquatic talking heads "this could be the plaice"
I will say that the 62 Lolita being heavily altered bc of the Hays Code is very funny
The thing I find a bit annoying about responses to Lolita is that people agree that Humbert is unreliable through and through and his interpretation of Lolita's behaviour is her flirting and being a seductive temptress etc when "in reality" her behaviour was much more negative. But like personally I have little doubt that a 12 year old in the 50s would be so blithely unaware of sex and romantic behaviour and I'm sure her crush on Humbert was real and she did go and kiss him before leaving for camp etc -- but the material point is that she's 12 and regardless of how much she's flirting with a grown man he shouldn't be responding to it like that's the big point here. Like as always in literature (Pamela, Daisy Miller, every other kind of coquettish woman who seems to want it but might not) the critical conversation surrounds whether the woman (in this case girl) is actually a temptress or truly innocent (note: always a harsh binary between the two) rather than whether Mr B or Winterbourne or Humbert are justifying their behaviour based on the actual unimagined behaviour of another person. Like to diminish the whole of Lolita into a completely unreliable mess rather than an attempt to justify the prolonged abuse of a child (with her behaviour as evidence) misses such a big part of it. It feels like the kind of point you can't even make because you're basically saying well maybe Lolita DID want it. But maybe she did! Humbert implies she probably had sex or was molested while she was at camp and perhaps the hardest pill to swallow is that maybe she was just aware of what she was doing and 'consented' to sex with Humbert (inasmuch as she is a willing participant (at first), despite being a minor). But that obviously changes nothing about Humbert's response: he spends the first half of the book going oh members of the jury aren't I wonderful for only taking advantage of children from a distance and in ways that never hurt them, I would never rape a child - but then in the second half justifying his rape of Lolita with the fact that she wanted it. Like surely it changes nothing whether she wanted it or not. Is that not the point here....
I'm still so irrationally angry at the TWENTY SECOND completely static shot that isn't even framed well during this song. Did john chu forget he was in charge of this or something
Genuinely if this is what 100 years of musical theatre and cinema has been leading up to just burn it all down. Every studio and throw all the film on there as kindling too I'm so serious if this can make 800 million dollars we are so undeserving. Why is cynthia just sat there like she isn't even in character
This film has somewhere between fifty and a hundred and fifty thousand shot/reverse shots at inappropriate moments and then he just went nah just set up the wheelchair so her face is barely visible then let the shittest diffuse lighting pour in through the open windows to overpower the tiny amount of her face we can see because "we" (someone else) "will" (won't) "fix it" (no fixing this) "in post" (stopped recording and literally forgot about it most likely). But at least they planted 8 billion tulips for one incredibly brief establishing shot
