So what do you think of the results? It feels like a good result to me, but where do you think the UK goes from here?
There’s good and bad here.
The good parts are that 78% of young people voted and it really shows how much of a difference that made. And for the first time in years, the conservative party actually has great opposition from the labour party for the first time in years and they have the chance to make real change and try to block those potentially disastrous bills and I’m thrilled that labour jumped in popularity.
But the bad is so. Very. Bad. We still have an incompetent conservative prime minister. And now she’s looking to make a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to stay in power. In case people are confused about what the DUP stand for, here are there stances on a few things:
Arlene Foster, leader of the DUP since 2015 has made several homophobic comments about how marriage should only be between a man and a woman and has blocked a bill to pass it several times.
Members of the DUP have also said things like: “the facts show that you certainly don’t bring up a child in a homosexual relationship. That child is far more likely to be abused or neglected.“
Ian Paisley Jr. (son of the DUP founder Ian Paisley) has called homosexuality “immoral, offensive and obnoxious” and argues that he’s repulsed by gays and lesbians.
They once endorced a campaign called “Save Ulster from Sodomy”.
Strongly against abortion.
Foster vowed to prevent abortions being made avaliable in Northern Ireland last year.
She said “I would not want abortion to be as freely available here as it is in England.”
Foster has made several comments about other politicians appearance and used it to criticize them.
Appointed Sammy Wilson, a radical climate change denier, as it’s environmental minister.
Wilson said it was a “con” to suggest humans had any involvement in changing weather patterns.
Argued against renewable energy in 2014, saying it’s the reason we pay so much for electricity.
Argued creationism should be forced to be taught in every school.
DUP politician Edwin Poots argues against the teaching of the scientific explanations like the big bang. He said “you’re telling me that cosmic balls of dust gathered and there was an explosion. We’ve had lots of explosions in Northern Ireland and I’ve never seen anything come out of that that was good.”
Wants to reintroduce the death penalty
Supports Trident (U.K.s nuclear weapons programme)
Past members have been kicked out of the Conservative party for being, what they deemed as, “too racist”.
And now these people have the potential to hold significant amounts of power over our country and I’m legitimately more terrified for this countries future than I have ever been before. (Please feel free to add anything if I’ve missed it).
