I don’t need you to tell me what she meant.
[mask] I'm just trying to be a helpful member of society, spelling out the obvious for Gotham's youth.
What is your opinion on the city's current tragedies?
[mask] Can anyone beyond a few honestly say they care? One man's tragedy is everyone else's headline to gossip with and feign solidarity on, when all they're interested in is getting hot and heavy over how screwed up things got.
But to answer your question: None of my concern. You want to have psychotic breaks and kill a bunch of girls for no good reason? Fine. God knows it's all anyone's capable of here.
Why the....log face?
[mask] It's to match your pretty grey face that I could only wish were right in front of me, because then both my mask and your face could experience getting a knife through it.
Magic 101: Necromancy || Roman & Stephanie
Tip of a knife digging into casket wood; that had been the end. No more masks. No more pretending. The metaphorical masks, of course; the ones every person – socialite, congressman, checkout chick, low life thug, man, woman, child donned, with no end to how many different ones they wore in a day. All ciphers, as Roman Sionis had known since childhood – playing pretend with their feelings and perspectives over and over and over and over again due to anything from sycophancy to the fear of loss of control, just as Charles and Jocasta Sionis had once done before they had writhed and screamed and died in fire. Enjoying the same status as their idols of vitriol, Thomas and Martha Wayne, at last.
The Roman Sionis of Janus Industries had needed to join them, of course. It would have been hypocrisy not to. Short of being consumed by flames himself, he could still die. Become not dissimilar to the blackened bones of his parents – was Charles Sionis’ skull black after his death? Would his son who lived on truly come to reflect him? Black Mask himself continued on the family legacy of what was underneath – hateful and self-serving, revelling in it freely when his predecessors had kept it behind closed doors, but it came with its price. To enjoy anonymity, the physical mask had to be pulled off as the mask used by society had to be put back on.
There was zero debate that the lovely Zatanna Zatara was worth it, magic extraordinaire as she was. With umbrella in hand catching the drizzle and black greatcoat catching the specks of moisture, Black Mask disappeared from the naked eye as the features of the old Roman Sionis took his place. Only the eyes remained, dull, the nurses had commented following his tumultuous birth. Even a mother obsessed with appearances had noticed the fact. Venom in transparent jelly and sclera.
Turning the last corner, Hexuality was visible immediately at the other end road, its outside lights shining dim in the evening. A loose gaggle of people were outside, the doors already open for entrance for that nights show with some either heading inside or chatting with others as they waited for friends. Cheap though the tickets were, no one threw even so much as a glance at Roman’s more expensive dress; the high ranking elite and even others in his own business were regular patrons just as much as anyone else. The only difference tended to be that they booked in advance, taking up the spaces of all the other common folk who wouldn’t want to pay the advance fee. Assholes.
Passing a black dressed and beautiful Alexandra Kosov who had no idea who he was, her only good eye not even registering him and instead focused on whoever the hell her shoulder ornament was tonight, Roman pulled in his umbrella as he strode into the foyer, water dripping into the carpet from the metal tip. One of the ticket booths was already taken; some blonde haired girl with her back turned to him taking up the attendant’s attention. That was about as much as he cared to register as he opted for the free one beside her, wallet being pulled from trouser pockets.
“…Y’know, you should be careful ‘bout going out this time of night by yourself. You been hearing about all these girls disappearin’ and bein’ killed and all that?...”
Whilst his own bored looking attendant said nothing as he exchanged his money for a ticket, the one beside him seemed to be one of those ones that made up for it the worst way possible - via unnecessary conversation with people who didn't care to listen to them. Her tone was light and breathy, as if she were sharing mere gossip rather than warning about an Arkham escapee. Tetch. Demented short guy. Alice in Wonderland – why was everyone in this city just so damn crazy?
The rip of a ticket beside him before it was handed over, and out of the corner of his eye the girl’s face became apparent for just the briefest of moments as she moved.
Brave. Intrepid. The definition of derring-do. A girl in a ridiculous purple costume with long blonde hair and a pretty face had once demonstrated that holes could be gouged in it all, where the vitality that was all bottled up underneath a sealed surface could be punctured and left to bleed out. Down into puddles on the floor, running into the grates of rusted drains to spiral away and disappear out of sight, out of mind.
“Tragic, ain’t it?”
Not a muscle twitched as he stepped away from the booth. Simply, he followed the trail of a few to the auditorium, leaving the girl behind him. It had only been a glimpse. The Mad Hatter probably thought all his Alice’s looked incredibly like one another, but Black Mask was not so haunted with faces blurring into one another. No impromptu attacks of the conscience, and the occasional act of entertaining fond old memories didn’t blink back into the real world.
When he’d enter the auditorium, picking his chair before the show started, his jacket was cast on the spare seat beside him, closest to the alley. At Hexuality, every seat would always fill, and until he spied that girl again it wouldn’t be moved – the inevitable last place to sit.
Time to see if one form of magic truly did exist.
I know, i know. Try to keep your admiration in check, I can’t afford to get a big ego. Oh, it’s quite the awesome little guy. Very useful.
[mask] I didn't think it was possible for anyone to endure that level of pain without turning into a vegetable, says Wikipedia. I'm impressed that you're familiar with it. Not so impressed so as to feed your ego; I realise that getting it any bigger would result in cardiac arrest.
Take how bad that would be as you will.
[mask] Yes, his lack of a personality if my favorite thing about Batman. What’s yours? His eyes? I bet it’s his eyes.
Nah, did that yesterday.
[mask] They are pretty damn dreamy, aren't they? I've always had a thing for eyes.
Recommending all the seven year olds pull on a cape and fight all the baddies? How cute. I love it when all the freaks inspire the kids into an early grave.
[mask] Again. Rude. Not a shadow.
[mask] I'm kidding. He's not nearly so sickening. Don't you have a heart warming motivational speech lined up for you at an elementary school or something?
[mask] Okay, rude— but then again, what do I even expect? Honestly.
[mask] Am I getting too predictable? Change never comes easy, and it's all too easy to get caught in a mould. As I'm sure Batman's little shadow knows.
I’m sure there are. Bees, stingrays, jellyfish…
[mask] Hang on, hang on; you're a veritable fountain of ideas. Let me write this all down. I've heard great things about the Irukandji jellyfish.
Am I the alco-pop in this metaphor? Gotta say, that stings. And also kinda reeks of jealousy.
[mask] Yes. Also, I'm glad. Also, I don't care. There are things that can sting a lot more, trust me.
holy-red-hood replied to your post:hubba hubba
Jealous?
I understand that some people need to take the time to move on from the bubbly cheap alco-pop to the aged, finer caskets.
hubba hubba
Already saw this on the page of some other guy. Not gonna be your sloppy seconds, anon.
But thanks. I know.
Stalag 17 || Matches Malone & Black Mask
The docks were a helluva long trek from the East End foxhole Matches Malone was burrowed in for the cold season. Trains were jam-packed too. Made it like squeezing through tins of sardines. Smelt just about as nice, too. There were kids having some seasonal bash out in Grant Park. Jeanine had been after Malone to take her to that thing. He almost wanted to, even. Then, she dumped him three days ago because he said he was booked for Christmas. That was the problem with work. It always came first. Man gotta eat. She should have waited. Worst fiancée ever.
A fortnight ago, a scarred and tattooed former convict named Lubov Viktorovich Popov had walked into Nine Lives. Claiming to be a mid-level enforcer of the Dimitrov family, he told Slam Bradley that his boss was planning to turn the East End into the site of a battle royale to wrest final control of the worst neighbourhoods of Gotham from Black Mask. Since Lubov liked his head on his shoulders, he wanted to be put in touch with someone in the False Face Society who had similar notions about dying another day. Lubov’s pitch was that he, Slam and the other guy would go down in history. They’d be the ones who thwarted potentially the worst gang war in Gotham since the one started by that Spoiler girl. Ultimately, the good detective came through, and Batman had a foot in the door.
Using mildly false information as leverage to get there didn’t bother him too much. Handing over rare and beautiful artefacts to a filthy criminal, did.
Now, it was thirty-five minutes before the agreed time, but from atop the cotton warehouse, Batman could already see Black Mask by the water’s edge. The only thing surprising about it was that he was accompanied solely by his accountant. Arriving early gave him not just the standard advantages of planting his own men and rooting out his enemy’s traps. Malone would have come early with the specific intention of laying groundwork and mentally assured he wouldn’t confront Black Mask for a while. Black Mask’s very presence destroyed the psychological advantage.
Getting to ground level and shrugging into Matches Malone’s skin took another five minutes. With the Brylcreem slicking back his hair and Pepe-Le-Pew-level strong cologne, he made even the dock workers’ turn their heads as he strolled towards his prey.
Matches Malone was no welcher. He paid his debts. Mostly on time. Gregg (Double G), his bookie, loved him. Guy drew overdraft on nearly everything, but by God, he returned it with interest. Magdalena Kyle, Stephanie Brown, Gavin King. Too bad paying debts wiped him out and didn’t leave much left over for buying flowers and candy for Jeanine.
Maybe if this gig paid well, he’d get that ring she was always eyeing pretend-stealthily. The gold one. Simple band, not too fancy, matching set for two.
Snow was falling again in the five minutes it took to reach Black Mask. Fucking hated the snow. The fat white flakes put ‘salt’ in his hair at forty goddamn one. The skull gig looked more disturbing up close. Malone bit down harder on the match between his teeth. Those eyes could be empty sockets. From the depths of his greatcoat, he thrust out a Thermos and a clean-looking tumbler. He ignored the number-pusher and aimed his ingratiating smile for the new boss.
"Irish coffee," he announced. "Thought you might show up early. But the weather forecast said things’d be bad. Didn’t want you to lose a nut or something while you waited for me."
A good henchman applicant arrived before time to scout his own advantages. A good henchman arrived before time to advantage the boss.
All around them, something was happening. People were dying. Shot in the streets as Jane and John Doe, unknown beyond the crime scene investigation units. Robbed blind without any suspects to pin down. Catastrophes to those that didn't matter; not even a blip on the radar of everyone else.
The notion was extremely irrelevant, but if you looked straight to the city, straight up at it, not a shred of it was visible. You saw plumes of smoke, maybe the distant sound of an echoing gunshot, but it was the ambient backdrop to a mere façade. Sure as hell not picturesque, but with a glance it didn't give away all that it held within. Always something going on under the surface, never seen.
It had its own mask, just like the people that inhabited it. They all wore some smaller part of it, a different facet of it.
The man who called himself Matches Malone would be no different.
Naturally, he was greeted with a grin as he approached from the rolling late-night fog and moisture, his reflection from the wet and incoming snow glimmering back up from the slicked ground. Bare teeth, even wooden ones, tended to do that. Underneath, Black Mask was doing anything but smiling. A key feature of Roman Sionis since before puberty; his lips always set naturally with a touch of a caustic virulence and disdain. For now, it was because some... mook off the street had plucked the grape from the vine he had heard it from, no doubt because another had made it known. Someone out there who was almost certainly still breathing. The idea was enough to engorge a blood vessel to the temple.
His eyes acknowledged the presented Thermos with a brief flicker, narrowing to slits in the hollows. As the only remaining method of facial communication, they were what spoke volumes when he couldn't be bothered using his voice; fire behind dull and weathered glass. What could also speak was a good flick of the wrist, a small amount of annoyance flaring.
"If something comes around one of these days and busts my balls, it ain't gonna be the cold," he said, voice hinting a slight edge as hands clasped and clenched behind his back. On the job, if one of his men so much as offered him something whilst they were to remain in the vicinity, they knew there would be a disproportionate amount of hell to pay. Unmoving mouth. Made things pretty difficult when you needed to use it, from drugs to food to drinking, and the appearance underneath wasn't up for viewing. To the left of them, Li allowed himself the smallest of smiles; he'd already been yammering about the weather the whole ride across.
Ignoring the offering completely, he began to move away from the water's edge with the unsaid expectation that Malone would continue into step beside him, heading to one of the brick buildings in more of a heightened state of disrepair than the rest. What few workers around were long used to paying no heed to random visitors to the docks, lucrative opportunities in the midsts of economic downturn making sure of that. Quite a few were also privy to the fact that with a single swipe to Li's smartphone tucked in his pocket, the man with the moustache and greased hair was to become their new focus of work - not to kill him, of course; more just to keep Black Mask from killing him then and there. Just severely maim him until he could be gotten to a chamber of more suitable means.
"I'm going to be upfront here, and I expect the same from you," he began, shoulders hunching against the elements. "Your 'resourcefulness' is my security breach, which means that despite there being a dead man out there walking, you've got my attention. Congratulations."
Halting for a moment, he turned to properly face Matches, his darkened eyes flashing at his newest associate.
"But also my curiosity. Why the interest, Malone? Why get your hands on a 1700 plus bottle of Glenglassaugh and a Bamana mask?" The Roman, Penguin, Maroni, Sabatino - even Two-Face probably had positions available here and there, as well as the countless other gangs in Gotham. Black Mask appealed to the like-minded, and not just that, but those fuelled by utter blood lust who were motivated almost solely by the need to kill and torture.
"And before you answer, let it be known that evasion was part of the reason this job has opened up in the first place. First word of advice; do not piss me off."
[mask pm: Matches] I remember what you did to Magdalena Kyle. Right. Got it. Yes, sir. Mr. Black Mask.
[mask pm] Good. Now, that'll be all.
[user offline]
[mask pm: Matches] That sounds like a waste of effort, Boss. If you don’t mind me saying. Because a mosquito’s too small to tear its wings off easily, and its friends are too dumb to get the hint. They ain’t like people, on whom that’s a great trick. Unless… you just tell people that’s what you do to sound more like a badass, in case, hat’s off. It’s working.
"Fun to be had." This is why the boys and I would very much appreciate it and be extremely obliged if you took that nice seminar on Workplace Appropriate Conduct.
[mask pm] I need that drink now. That's either extremely multifaceted of you or the level of stupidity in this city has ascended to new heights. Either way, don't make me demonstrate it on you. I'm not in need of a new advisor, but I may still yet be in search of another man.
Do you remember what I was saying before about forcing those teeth of yours down your gullet?
[mask pm: Matches] Your call’s your call. You’re the boss. All I’m saying is that when I see a mosquito, I wanna squish it. Y’know, before it bites me. One squish now beats the hell out of the itch that comes later.
…Uh. Just so we’re on the same page, I really prefer to be paid for my services in cash. Sir. I, er, value my employment with you—sir—but I like keeping things strictly professional. Makes things easier later when one party don’t call when he promised.
[mask pm] And when I see a mosquito, I prefer pulling its wings off first. So much more satisfying in the long run.
Was I asking you to give me a hand job under the table? Jesus Christ. I wasn't speaking to the contrary. All I'm saying is all good things start with initiation, and I want you to stay on that path. There's just always fun to be had.
[mask] Haven’t you ever heard of not mixing business with pleasure, Mr. Mask? May I call you Mr. Mask? Or is that too formal…Maskie?
[mask] Sometimes the line just blurs. Don't think I care; but I prefer a girl who treats me right until we move onto the pleasantries. Did you actually want something?
