Escape Attempt
Context: The Warhammer 40,000: Black Crusade introductory adventure “Broken Chains.” New GM and all new players.
GM: [paraphrasing] You are in a circular prison cell with a thick steel door and an air vent.
Chaos Marine: I force open the door.
GM: Even your augmented might cannot match the magnetically sealed lock. You fail to open the door.
Chaos Marine: I sulk in the corner.
GM: You’re in a round room, so you fail at that, too.

Haven’t painted a mini in a long time! This is one of the two Whitemane Duelist from Wrath of Kings. Love the look and flow of this model so I bought a box as soon as I saw them!
Aaand here they are, my first shot at 2D character tokens! What do you think of this 32-piece test run? I had a lot of fun making them, so please let me know if you’d like to see more!
You can download them free here.
When I DM, my sessions have pretty stupid plots. I often just string together a bunch of wacky encounters. If I had my way, the PCs would stay in town the whole time and just deal with crazy people and situations.
And when I completely run out of ideas, I’m not afraid to fall back on the classic “doppelgangers impersonate the PCs and commit terrible atrocities”.
Below is an encounter from my Wild Wilderness book available on the DM’s Guild.
Talent Show Suggested Level: 1-3 Terrain: Any Type: Social NPC Class: Bard
The PCs are walking down a road as evening falls. While searching for a place to camp, they find the campsite of a troupe of bards. The four bards invite the PCs to join them for the night. If the PCs agree, the bards will be very friendly. They are a boisterous group who are happy to share their food and booze. They more than willing to eat, drink, talk, and sing the night away.
At some point in the evening, a debate begins about which bard is the best singer. One suggests performing for the PCs and letting them settle the matter. Each bard will perform one song and the PCs vote on who was the most entertaining.
Fernio: Fernio is a regal-looking elf. Before his performance, he slips the PCs a note. In the note, Fernio offers them a treasure map if they vote him the winner and do not tell the other bards about the bribe. Fernio sings and plays a harp. He is a very proficient singer with a large vocal range, but his lyrics are unimaginative. They describe the beauty of nature and Fernio’s elven homeland. Anyone but elves and nature lovers will probably find the music very boring.
Dorna: Dorna is a tough half-orc with a badly scarred face. Before her performance, she slips the PCs a note. In the note, Dorna offers them 100 gold if they vote her the winner and do not tell the other bards about the bribe. Dorna is a poor singer with a loud, gravelly voice. She sings a ballad about her life as a sailor, gladiator, bouncer, circus performer, and bard. Allegedly, she has plucked out a basilisk’s eye, slept with a vampire prince, and been kicked in the head by a horse so hard that she was comatose for year. If even half of her story is true, Dorna is a contender for the most interesting person alive.
Shallu: Shallu is an incredibly beautiful human. His gender is totally ambiguous, which only adds to his uncanny allure. People of either gender find Shallu attractive, and her stunning appearance is part of her performance. He wears a tight, revealing robe, and his song is full of innuendo and seductive promise. Each verse is addressed to a different PC. She praises their looks and potential prowess as lovers.
Rompers: Rompers is a clown. She wears face paint, a wig, and brightly-colored clothes. Her song is a hilarious but cruel attack on the other bards. Rompers describes Fernio as snobby and boring. She quips, “If he thinks nature is so beautiful, he should make love to a bear”. She says Dorna is a liar and a blowhard, and claims that Dorna’s facial scars were caused by a venereal disease. Lastly, Rompers calls Shallu is a talentless airhead who would “sleep with a beggar for the change in his cup”. If the PCs do not seem interested in her song, Rompers might insult them too.
When the performances are done, the PCs will be asked to vote the most entertaining song. The bards might contest the decision or bicker about it, but they will not be mean or hostile about it. If Fernio or Dorna is declared winner, the PCs will be discreetly given their reward at some point in the evening. Dorna’s gold coins are counterfeits, which the PCs will realize with a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check (15). If not, the coins will probably cause a conflict when the PCs try to spend them.
If Shallu wins, he will flirt with the most attractive PC who voted for him, which might result in a romantic encounter. If Rompers wins or comes in last place, she will celebrate or drown her sorrows by getting extremely drunk. The next morning, the troupe will discover that Rompers is missing and will beg the PCs to help them find her. One of the bards looks worried and says, “When Rompers gets drunk, she’s capable of anything.”
The next morning, the PCs and the bards might part ways, but they do not have to. The bards could suggest traveling with the PCs. They could hire the PCs wilderness guides or as security at their next performance. If any of the PCs are bards, the troupe may try to recruit them. If any of the PCs were flirtatious with Shallu, a romance could begin.
Aside from Dome Raid, I’ve also been writing a book of encounters for D&D 5e. Here’s a sneak peek.
Retired Reaver
Suggested Level: 4-6
Terrain: any
Type: social
NPC Class: monster
At an isolated crossroads, the PCs encounter an undead revenant. He is completely naked, and paces wearily, carrying his severed head. Spotting the PCs, he approaches and pleads in an anguished voice.
“Hail travelers! You must help me. You must! I am Lorence Peddler, or I was, at least. That was fifty years ago. Now am I just body without a soul. It’s a long story, but I beg you to listen. Oh, where do I begin?”
During his life, Lorence was a merchant. While traveling, he was ambushed at these crossroads by a gang of bandits. The gang’s leader was Dirksa Throatpuncher, a bandit of legendary ruthlessness and cruelty. She robbed Lorence of everything he had, even his clothes, then lopped off his head.
The PCs can roll a History (Intelligence) check (15) to have heard of Dirksa Throatpuncher. She is a deft swordswoman and a bloodthirsty bandit. She has robbed and killed over a hundred people, but all the stories about her are at least fifty years old.
After swearing revenge on Dirksa with his dying breath, Lorence returned to life as a revenant. He has been trying to destroy Dirksa for fifty years, but Dirksa wields a “magic sword” which Lorence cannot fight against. He begs the PCs to help him get revenge.
If the PCs agree to help, Lorence leads them several miles to Dirksa’s cottage. Dirksa Throatpuncher is inside, but she is no longer the bloodthirsty bandit she once was. It has been fifty years since her last murder, and now she is an old hermit living in peaceful seclusion.
If Lorence enters the cottage, Dirksa will grab a glowing sun sword from her mantle. The PCs can roll an Insight (Wisdom) check (15) to recognize that Dirksa was once a skilled fighter, but age has made her slow and feeble. Lorence recoils from the sun sword’s glow. Dirska addresses him in a tired voice:
“You’re back, you old spook, and you brought friends with you. Just leave me alone. I ain’t Dirksa Throatpuncher no more. I don’t answer to that now.”
Dirksa retired from her life as a bandit fifty years ago. She has mellowed in her old age, and no longer kills people. If confronted about her crimes, she explains, “I was a lot wilder as a lass, but those days are long behind me.” If the PCs suggest turning her over to the authorities, she will resist and say, “Ain’t no point in me going to the gallows. Everyone I killed is gone and forgotten by now. I ain’t harming no one.” If the PCs attack Dirksa, she will fight back. The DM can use the bandit captain NPC for Dirksa’s stats. Lorence is repelled by Dirksa’s sun sword and cannot aid in the combat.
If the PCs do not kill Dirksa or bring her justice, Lorence will be angry. He swears at the PCs and laments his eternal restlessness. He may attack the PCs if further provoked.

“That’s the last thing I expected”
DMs, have a bit of fun and play with your players’ expectations! Devise a campaign with ways to describe items, locations, NPCs, etc. so that the players are expecting things very different than the reality.
Some ideas:
The party is sent to seek out an Obsidian Pyramid in the middle of the desert. They’re expecting a large, black glass temple, searching for hours. Just before they give up, one hero trips down a dune and discovers the pyramid…. is a tiny, black stone artifact of magic or alien origins.
The party is urged into a jungle, where there’s been a rare sighting of the teleporting Apple of Eden. What they expect is a small, actual apple turns out to be a huge greenhouse/zoological reserve with rare flora and fauna within, which just happens to be shaped like an apple.
The party must track down a House of Scholars in the mountains, to look for the Guide to the Afterlife in the school’s library. The party gets through every book in the vast collection, but never find any tome of necromancy named the Guide to the Afterlife. Eventually, a librarian comes up to them, and asks them if they need assistance. If the party reveals what they’re searching for, the librarian laughs and replies “Gods, I haven’t been called that in years!” “… YOU’RE the Guide to the Afterlife?!” “Yeah, I developed the ‘advanced necromancy techniques’ you’re looking for as my graduation thesis :D “
Happy gaming~!
