The End of Time part 2 // The Giggle
#If you need me, I will be crying in the corner
reminders for a bad day:
your worth is not just defined by how productive you are.
you don't have to prove anything to anyone.
you did your best, let it go.
you deserve to be treated kindly.
you deserve someone to be patient with you.
it's okay, we all make mistakes.
you can always choose to do things differently.
not every day is going to be the same.
An embed YouTube post? what year is this? 2013?
such a rare vid of Leo Reich belting out a classic from his Best Newcomer nominee, two-time Soho Theatre sellout, Amy Schumer & NYT-endorsed, Guardian’s best comedy show of 2022 ‘Literally Who Cares?!’ - I wish I could play ‘Having Sex with Someone Who Hates Me’ over and over again, it’s such a banger
10-year-old Tumblr achievement unlocked: finding out a Pierre Novellie thirst blog reposted my Daphne thingy two years ago… sorry but are you also the woman in a red dress (like from The Matrix) trying desperately to flirt from the front row at one of his gigs, but he was too tall to see it? This image been feeding my silly brain for weeks
♫ On a bargepole for me ♫
ugh the pain of narrowly missing out on a second round of the comedy show you love because you left the day before it started and then watching EVERYONE post about it (mainly Pierre) (where were the posters last week?!)
finally managed to convince another one of my closest friends to go see my favourite ever comedy show (not an exaggeration) and the realisation that he might not like it is sinking in and freaking me out slightly 🫠

Show #2: Sooz Kempner: PlayStation
There is so much free stuff on at the Fringe every year. But as a good gesture I always pay at least £5 because performing at the Fringe is a huge commitment, mentally, physically and financially. I love Sooz whenever she’s on The Now Show so naturally I had to go see her do a full hour about herself. Many of the PBS Fringe shows are on in the Cowgate area. This venue, The Banshee Labyrinth, is probably the spookiest bar in the city. Because it’s not enough that it is ancient, underground, and situated on one of the dodgiest sloped streets (although if you want to walk past comedians, this is it).
Sooz began her show by bringing us back to her childhood, growing up with her brother (Luke Kempner, the best Trump impressionist out there imho) in a room the size of a big cupboard. She reminisced about her favourite games on PlayStation (she mentioned the title!! Always cool when it happens.) But really it was a way for us to get to know her working-class family. Getting a PlayStation was a big deal for them. (Side note: she showed us the graphics of video games back then. Can never unsee Tomb Raider’s ridiculous pointy boobs.)
Sooz loves performing ever since she was a kid, and it shows. She had to move back in with her mum during the pandemic, and the fact she had the most embarrassing moment of her career broadcast on Sky News on election night didn’t help her to secure more gigs. Of course her state of shock when finding out Boris Johnson’s government winning with a landslide was completely justified, now even more so. (Also it was hilarious, obviously.) It’s refreshing to see someone unapologetically supporting Labour and being openly obsessed with UK politics, despite the fact that it might not always be good for your career.
Still don’t really understand how her show was FREE, so please go follow her on Twitter. She’s fighting TERFs and trolls every day. They even submit hate on her website, those fucking creeps.
p.s. yes, I’m not a great writer…. Hey, wait a minute, why are YOU reading this?
Show #1: The Delightful Sausage: Nowt But Sea
Hoo boy, my first show at my first EdFringe!
My first show after almost THREE years of zero live comedy! (I went to a few in Zurich, but it’s clear why people fly to Switzerland to die.)
Also: my first time meeting @rantsandravingsofashinykey since the start of the pandemic!
And my first time at a Delightful Sausage gig!
And finally, my first of many visits to a sweltering basement room in Edinburgh! I came here for the full Fringe experience, and I was not disappointed.
The Delightful Sausage was hot! It was a sold-out gig but Monkey Barrel always reserve ten tickets for PAYW. We very luckily got the last few but this meant our seats were on the last row towards the far right corner.
So, bearing in mind that I just got off the plane that morning with almost no sleep the previous night, my deliriousness mixed with anticipation giddiness and the unique sensation of being gently cooked alive in an airless room packed with other sweaty punters, while my mind fought off months of Covid-safe training, it felt pretty fucking surreal.
The show, as it turned out, was even more so. Did not know what to expect at all, and frankly, because I’m Hobbit-sized, I did not actually see most of the damn performance. What I managed to glimpse and hear though was great stuff. It reminded me of Daphne’s excellent Radio 4 show. One episode was set on a remote tropical island and they did very funny sketches about their strange encounters. Only in the end you don’t get to see Chris Cantrill wearing nothing but gold boxer shorts covered in lube (it was ultrasound gel, we asked. It’s cheaper, apparently). And there’s a twist at the end. I love that this show is very charming and unmistakably Northern. Amy is so good at playing the much more sassy and clueless version of herself, and Chris is the loyal fool who would never leave his friend behind. (Hot tip: go check out their Twitter exchanges. if they’re not your best friend goals, I don’t know who are).
My favourite bit involved Only Connect and its inimitable host, Victoria Coren Mitchell, obviously. I totally get the crush, Chris. The weakest attempt at doing Victoria’s voice that I’ve ever seen, but it was so goddamn funny. Gutted I didn’t get the connection though :(
Of course I loved it, despite everything. It felt electrifying to be in an audience again. The fact that the Delightful Sausage got another Best Comedy nom is just the ultrasound gel icing on the cake. (Their Twitter handle is @MmmSausage, another reason to follow them.)
On the way out, we paid for our tickets to a still-wet half-naked Chris. Another hot EdFringe tip for anyone (is anyone??) reading is to pay in multiples of £5, not anything in between because those damn card machines would not let you. Chris felt bad that I opted to pay £8 or some stupid amount he gave me a Delightful Sausage merch FOR FREE. WHICH I THEN LOST 🫠
Greg: it was basically a fairly intimate film of a breakdown.
TASKMASTER | 14.09
2022 has been a weird one. I turned 30 and had another one of those existential crises. This time I was saved by this little known festival called the Edinburgh Fringe. In those nine days, I rediscovered the joy of watching live standup, alongside my confidence and purpose in life. Not even joking, that was the assurance I needed to end a toxic friendship. This was my “Eat, Pray, Love” journey (ugh) essentially, or rather “Eat, Run, Laugh” (very unoriginal, 1 star). Mark Watson tweeted that he did the most walking he had done all year by gigging one month at the Fringe and I totally understand why. All the world’s a stage, and the city of Edinburgh is that MASSIVE stage in August.
I also learnt not to give a flying toss to those who think going to live comedy alone is weird. It really is not. That being passionate about things is okay. And that I love comedy so much I did not mind that I was literally covered with filth (bin strikes and tourists during the hottest summer, go figure). Metaphorically my brain was filled with filth too, considering three nights in a row I saw a different man’s genitalia on stage (not Jerry Sadowitz’s, fortunately).
Having seen 56(??? I don’t even remember the exact number anymore) shows at this year’s EdFringe, which isn’t that many, I know, I’ve been dying to share my experience. Insanely I do remember every single show I went to vividly.
So to countdown the remaining days in 2022, I’ll finally use my Tumblr for what our hot daddy David Karp created it to do, blog. More specifically blog about the 53(?!?) Fringe shows I saw.
p.s. this play was on at the Fringe! it’s about the Greek mythological figure Medea (spoiler alert: she killed her own children), also the name of the gene that I work on in my spare time as a crime-solving PhD student.
