So I got braces, no that’s not my teeth that’s just a picture from Pinterest. I don’t like my teeth ergo braces. I looked all over the internet for tips on getting braces and now I realise I was misinformed so here’s your:
NO BULLSH*T GUIDE TO GETTING BRACES:
- Wear lip balm all day leading up to your appointment and bring it with you, it’ll definitely help because your lips get dry while they put the braces on.
- Take a pain killer before your appointment
- Braces are put on using superglue... well the dentist alternative. For some reason in my mind I thought they are put on in some other way so I googled it and this gave me peace of mind.
- All you'll feel when braces are put on is this weird sensation of something pushing on your teeth, then when they are on it'll be so weird! It'll be hard to speak for the first few minutes and you'll think you'll never get used to the braces but you will I promise.
- At first you'll feel very little pain, I thought people over exaggerated braces, the pain will slowly increase remember to take painkillers whenever possible it's a real life saver I promise.
- Prepare for eating soft foods because your teeth will be extremely sensitive for the first week! I drank smoothies all week and ate soup.
- BUY THE WAX!!! I didn’t buy wax because I thought it was overpriced and then ordered a multi pack on amazon I was so relived when it arrived because it helps stop the braces from tearing your mouth apart especially during that first week.
- Brushing your teeth is a weird sensation, you have to angle the toothbrush more here's a handy video
- flossing is basically impossible but you can get one of these cool water flossers, I got one and it literally is the best invention ever. Best thing is you can find some online that are around $10 and do basically the same job as a $60 water flosser.
- Prepare yourself mentally, it'll be weird to see yourself with braces and to talk, I wanted to cry because I had a lisp for a few days and I felt like I'll never be able to eat normal food again but one week later I was basically back to normal life.
- listen to what the orthodontist says, you don't want to have braces for an extended amount of time so if you do what they say and avoid hard foods you'll get the braces of quicker.
- Don't eat foods with too much sugar, it causes your teeth to go yellow and then when your braces will be taken off you'll have white spots surrounded by yellow. All it takes is quitting foods that are high in sugar and honestly that's good for you anyway. Thanks Dr Smith for terrifying me into a healthy diet 😉
- Watch loads of content made by people with braces to learn about your braces, knowing what others have been through helps you with your own braces that’s something I learnt personally.
- Search up the #braces tag whenever you start feeling bad about your braces especially on Instagram, you’ll see people loving their braces and flexing them and honestly that’s such a positive feeling and it’s helping me embrace my braces!
(This girl knows more than me)
I’ve only had braces for a month so I’m in now way experienced to tell you everything about braces but whenever I learn something new I’ll try and tell you! So we can all learn? If you have any tips please reblog this with them because I’d love to learn more about how to deal with the metal in my mouth.
