On the 27th of September 1980 Madness receive a lifetime ban from anarchic Saturday morning kids show - Tiswas.
Tiswas became popular with rock and pop stars. Even punk legends the Clash, who famously shunned Top Of The Pops, made a guest appearance. Inevitably, rock ânâ roll behaviour came with the deal. Co-host - Chris Tarrant had to douse heavy rockers Rainbow in water when they sparked up a joint on camera.
âThe record companies were paying the appearance fees just to get their bands on. We had Motorhead on, for godâs sake! I remember Lemmy (lead singer) walking around the studio with a bottle of vodka. But he wasnât doing it to be deliberately obnoxious, it was just a programme where you could be yourself without any pretence.â
But It was Madness who caused the biggest furore, getting kicked off for spraying 'silly stringâ in the face of Sally James (co-host) during a chemically boosted interview.
âWe were just coming down off an acid trip. Me and Carl were dressed as clowns and we sprayed Sally James with this spaghetti foam stuff. Then I tried to take it off and pulled her false eyelashes out, and she had a fit. We were banned and never asked back on again.â
Suggs and Carl were dressed as clowns - 'The Co-Co Twinsâ. To cap things off, a kid bit Lee Thompson and Lee naturally retaliated. After their removal from the show the lads made their way home by train back to London, The Co-Co Twins still dressed in their costumes.
Tiswas mistreated its celebrity visitors equally harshly. Every week, willing victims such as ELO, John Peel, Status Quo, Bad Manners and Motorhead were crammed into 'The Cageâ to be assailed with freezing water and sticky gunge. In a bizarrely romantic twist, former Specials singer Rhoda Dakar met her future husband Ian in 'The Cageâ, back in 1980.
