Day 1 at the office: I fully expect it to be like The Office
Me: ...
Internal Monologue: la uva in Spanish is "grape", related to "uvula" the thing that hangs in the back of your throat which comes from Latin meaning "little grape", and el huevo in Spanish is "egg" which is related to "oval" and "ovum" because eggs are oval, related to "ovulation" too. Is it possible that la uva and el huevo are connected somehow, though that might be uncertain since eggs come from chickens and chickens originate in Asia, but I don't think grapes were cultivated in Asia until contact with the Mediterranean which means that uva might come specifically from Latin but huevo and ovum might come from Indo-European. It could all be a coincidence but I can't know for certain until I look into it, though it is strange how grapes and eggs have a similar shape and a similar name is there actually such a thing as that kind of coincidence...
Friend: Are you okay?
Me: What
i made a thing. :)

New Years resolutions are the definition of crazy (doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results) so the fact that I still continue to do them says more about me than I'd like :///// This year I want to have a conversation (no matter how basic) in ASL and Spanish. My half resolution is to not completely lose what little Mandarin I know 欢迎2016!

mandarin & cantonese: useful verbs
made with lots of help and advice from @language-obsession and his two posts on cantonese, which can be found here and here :D
some notes and further resources:
cantonese jyutping and IPA key
although 是 and 係 mean to be in mandarin and cantonese, respectively, to indicate one’s location (i.e. “i am here”), you’d use 在 (zài) in mandarin and 喺 (hai2) in cantonese
有 in mandarin (pronounced yǒu) and in cantonese (pronounced jau5) can both mean there is as well as to have
while most verbs in mandarin negate by placing 不 (bù) in front of the verb, 有 takes 没 (méi) instead
similarly, in cantonese, most verbs negate by placing 唔 (m4) in front of the verb, but 有 is preceded by 冇 (mou5) instead
for the verb to want, 想 (xiǎng in mandarin and seong2 in cantonese) is used with a verb, while 想要 (xiǎng yào in mandarin and seong2 jiu3 in cantonese) is used with a noun
for the verb to know, 知道 (zhī dào) in mandarin and 知 (zi1) in cantonese mean to know facts, while 认识 (rèn shí) in mandarin and 識 (sik1) in cantonese mean to know people — it’s a distinction similar to savoir/connaître in french or saber/conocer in spanish
明 (ming4) on its own can also mean to understand in cantonese (it’s a shorter form of 明白)

My language skills have gotten 越来越差 since I’ve been back in the US so this is my attempt at learning it again, and not just using a text book. It seems to be something like Chinese style Amazing Race. 棒
I’ve just returned from a trip to Jordan and Turkey, where I had the unique opportunity to interview twelve Syrian families that have been cleared for resettlement in America. These families have just reached the finish line of a multi-year screening process, and it was quite an emotional experience to meet with them at this juncture. The life of a refugee in America is by no means easy. But for these families, their resettlement has finally brought the possibility of an end to years of intense hardship. I’m very much looking forward to sharing their stories with you over the coming days.
Forever thankful for @humansofnewyork. Forgive me if I fail to reblog everything of yours

I also took Chinese because I thought “what the hell I learned Spanish now I want to learn something completely different” and I just now absolutely love the language but so many people don’t take my study seriously only because my reason is “I wanted to take Chinese”. Like I have absolutely no connection to the language or culture with my upbringing but that doesn’t mean I’m not here to actively learn and try
This is me exactly, word for word. There was a point I was trying to decide between Japanese, Arabic, and Chinese, but I’m glad with my choice because I loooooove 汉语
The decision ends decades of restrictive policies that limited most urban families to one child.
