3.4k words & female reader!
IT WAS ANOTHER SUMMER, the Sennecke's and L/N's meeting once again for their annual summer at their shared lake house. Yet, this year was different. This year was after Beckett's rookie year in the NHL and Y/N's freshman year of college, and the growth in them showed. Beckett was still boyish but had matured, and it showed through his built muscles and newfound confidence that bordered cockiness. And Y/N had grown up in her own way, she felt wiser and effected by her first year, but it was no secret she had somehow been able to grow even more beautiful.
One thing that hadn't changed over the year was the feelings that they both felt for each other. The underlying yearning between every text and every call just to 'catch up', never went unnoticed. Although, this year was different than all the rest, they weren't kids anymore.
They had responsibilities and worries they never thought they would have to carry. The two always somehow carved their schedules to make time for one another and it was no secret to anyone why.
Growing up it had started as just a silly crush, one that would fade with time but no, with the two it had only blossomed. Childhood years spent splashing in the lake and teenage years spent laughing as they stumbled had only developed the infatuations into genuine feelings.
The type of feelings that make them feel on top of the moon together to feeling empty when they inevitably had to be torn apart by their separate lives. But, this year's new challenges weighed on them both distinctly, the wallows of real life fell on them. It was harder for them now than when they were younger, their lives were so drastically different, the concept of him a hot shot NHL player choosing her while Y/N knew he had so many other options dawned on Y/N as foolish.
But yet again here they were. Y/N lying on her back on the deck and Beckett growing more and more bored by the second. Y/N was letting her skin fry underneath the sun's harsh gaze, sunglasses perched on her nose as she ignored the feeling of Beckett dragging his finger through the layer of tanning lotion on her skin, tracing some insistent pattern onto her skin. "You're gonna fuck up my tan." She murmured with a swat at his hand.
Beckett just huffed a small laugh, smile gleaming under the glare of the sun. His hand dragging over his drawings in her skin to smooth the lather out again. "I'm bored." he huffed a breath out, eyes squinting as he lifted his head to face the sky instead of his best friend next to him. And thank god her sunglasses were so heavily tinted or he would be able to see the way her eyes drank in the line of his jaw and the flutter of his eyelashes around those pretty blue eyes. Her head snapped back up as his drew back to her, a small pout on his lips which of course was there only to guilt trip her.
And despite her stubbornness to continue to ignore him it was proved impossible to ignore Beckett Sennecke. In this case it was him with that stupid pout, looking at her with his stupidly insistent eyes and essentially filling every sense Y/N had.
The way he smelt of the same laundry detergent he's been using since they were 10 and the underlying brush of sunscreen on his skin, the same sunscreen he was demanding she put on before she laid down to tan. The way she could still see his big frame obstructing her vision although her eyes were looking up to the sky to avoid looking at him. The way she still felt the imprint of the press of his fingers into her skin from his gentle caress. The way she could hear his breath and the rustle of his swim shorts while he impatiently fidgeted in his spot, the chitter of the birds surrounding the lake and the soft crash of the lake on the shore. And finally the way she could still taste a hint of strawberry from the little snack he brought out "just for her" as he said, only eating one after Y/N offered. Again, he was impossible to ignore.
So, finally she cracked, "What?" she snapped, lifting her glasses to ultimately meet his eyes in which she knew would break her even further. In fact it was before he even started his stupid pouting that she knew she would give in to whatever he wanted but here she was either way, entertaining him.
Beckett just cackled at her annoyance at his interruption. And with a small tug of her hair to only further bother her, he gave a small shrug "Get in the lake with me?" he asked simply like he wasn't basically pleading her with his eyes alone a few seconds ago.
Despite knowing that she was going to inevitably give in, Y/N wasn't going without a fight (plus she wanted to hear him beg a little). "No." she rolled her eyes with a huff, lying her head back down and snapping her glasses back down to sit on her nose.
"Oh come on," Beckett grumbled, a grin still on his lips as he peeked Y/N's hidden little smile. He chuckled as she whined, his entire frame blocking the sun from shining over her face. As Y/N opened her eyes, Beckett's grin seemed to only grow at her frown. "Please?" His lips turned into a pout, poorly concealing his smile. Leaning forward to grab onto her hands and pull her up to a sitting position at the shake of her head, he repeated his previous word, dragging it out as they were more at eye level.
Y/N couldn't help it, she cracked a wide smile, letting him pull her up to her feet. "Okay, okay fine." she laughed with a shake of her head, "But I don't want to get my hair-"
Suddenly she was plummeting to the lake at a rapid speed with the sound of Beckett's cackles in her ear, his arms wrapped tightly around her middle as he jumped. A scream escaped Y/N in pure shock and when they crashed into the calm water. What wasn't a shock was the loud screech she let out the moment they rose, water running down both of their faces. "Beckett!" she shoved at his shoulder as he continued to laugh heartily, hands still grappling to hold onto her like he would miss the feeling without her.
"I'm sorry," He yelled as she splashed him relentlessly "I'm sorry!" the absolute shit grin he had contradicted that statement which only made Y/N splash him even harder, "Okay! Okay!" Beckett laughed, reaching for her again to pull her under with him.
Once they came up, they weren't above water for long as Y/N gripped his shoulders and pushed them both back into the water. They rose, giggling together like they were 12 all over again. His large hands raised to push some of her hair out of her face, where it was dripping onto her nose. And thank god she was already a bit sunburnt or maybe he would notice her blush, "You're such an ass." she grumbled, her smile giving it all away.
Beckett's smile actually dropped a little, "I am sorry about your hair." he said genuinely, which was immediately covered up with a smirk. "But maybe, if you hadn't taken your sweet time, you wouldn't be-"
"Oh shut up!"
GREY PLUMES OF SMOME rose into the night sky, laughter carrying through the wind and the smell of roasting or more like burnt marshmallows wafting through the air.
And of course there sat Beckett and Y/N, a little too close to each other with their bumping knees and stifling laughter as the mumbled small little joke to one another, always in their own bubble. Not that either of their families really minded, they were used to it after years of endurance. Years of watching the two running circles around each other, the obliviousness to the otherβs pining gets exhausting to watch after too long.
It wasn't long until it was just them two left with the dying flames, the campfire's warmth diminishing as the two continued to stuff their faces with marshmallows. Each marshmallow being followed with the muffled "Chubby Bunny", and giggles that are barely heard over the sugary treat. After her 11th marshmallow stuffed in her cheek, Y/N finally choked the sweets up and out into her hands with a laugh at the sight of pillows of sugar spilling out of Beckett's lips and filling his cheeks as he celebrated with muffled and cheers and pumping arms.
"Okay we get it big mouth." Y/N rolled her eyes, reaching to push him the gut, the fluffy delights pouring out of his mouth as he coughed. The girl was chuckling as he continued to hack, patting his back.
"Ouch! Why are you hitting me?" Beckett dramatically gasps, the grown man swatting at her hand. "Fucking hell, that hurt." He frowned, rubbing his stomach like her force seriously pained him (it most definitely didn't."
Y/N just ignored him, plopping a fresh new marshmallow onto a stick. "You'll be fine, you baby." Y/N giggled, eyes focused on the flames instead of the pouting boy beside her.
"Baby huh?" Beckett teased as he pulled something out of his pocket, fumbling in his cheap camping chair as he searched for it.
The girl's just huffed as she put together her s'mores, chocolate spilling onto her fingers. "You're so annoying." When she finally glanced at Becket her nose curled "Seriously? You brought weed to our wholesome family cabin?"
A flame lit to the end of a joint as Beckett chuckled, "Way to make it sound bad." He remarked, blue eyes shimmering in the light of the fire, "Maybe I just wanted you to let loose for once." He scrambled to add on before Y/N could interject "Not that I'm unhappy with your endless great moods." He threw his hands up.
"Yeah, right." Y/N mumbled under her breath, sneering at his offering. "No thanks, asshole."
"C'mon, you know I was kidding. You're my favorite person ever." He reached out to pinch her cheek which got swatted away, "Just try it. One puff, Baby."
Y/N hoped that the orange glow from the campfire would conceal the rush of blood to her checks. She was still unsure- but I guess she could trust Beckett, as he raised the joint up to her lips. "There you go." A grin growing on his lips as he watches her inhale whatever cheap weed he got his hands on, "Good girl."
A cough ripped out of her chest as the smoke effortlessly billows through her lips, "Holy shit." Y/N choked, gasping out the last of the smoke from her lungs. And once she collected herself she reached for it again, in which Beckett raised an eyebrow. "I wanna try again." She was determined to get it right.
Beckett didn't even try to hold back his roars of laughter because through the past 20 minutes his companion had gotten quite stoned. Y/N had probably her third or fifth s'mores since the joint burned out, and the rest of the chocolate squares that were left in the wrapper. A blanket wrapped around her as she stared into the flames of the campfire.
"So, what's the NHL like?"
"Y/N-"
"No seriously."
He laughed before finally meeting her eyes with a sigh. "It's my dream, its literally all I've ever wanted."
"But?" She could feel it coming, just from the fleeting of eyes and the way he fidgeted in his seat.
With a heavy exhale, his lips rumbling with the force of his breath he confided "It's hard- rough. Harder than anything else I've ever done. I mean I was used to the drills, but the pressure," His blonde hair shaking along with his head, "Not to mention the people, fans are harsh, teammates are brutal and god knows the coaches are difficult."
At his ramble Y/N frowned. She didn't know about any of this. This was her best friend and she didn't even know his struggles about his passion. I mean they called pretty often, but even those were quite surface-level little check ins to the remind themselves that the other hasnβt forgotten about them. Y/N couldn't believe she let something like this just fly over her head.
"Oh, don't make that face." Beckett murmured, his hand cupping her cheek, his thumb soothingly brushing her cheekbone. "I'm just glad I'm here with you."
Y/N melts at that, features softening at his touch. "Im really happy." she confessed, his blue eyes hypnotizing her into softness along with the fluffiness from the weed.
Beckett smiles, his palm dropping from her face. "Yeah?"
"Mhm..." She nodded, "Just like this. You, the lake. I just wish it could be like this forever." Y/N's eyes trained on the dancing flames in front of her.
He doesn't answer immediately, letting the silence hang. Watching as the glow from the fire painted her face.
"I wish it could too."
After a long silence, she leans her head onto his shoulder without much thought, just her sleepiness. Beckett goes completely still, afraid that moving an inch would make her warmth pull away.
Half-asleep, she mumbled.
"I miss you even when you're right here."
It was simple. Honest. Not quite a confession, but enough to make Beckett's heart race.
A hidden (he had to stay nonchalant) smile on his face as he looked down at the girl's head on his shoulder. Her tired heavy eyes, and her hair falling into her face as her body sank further into him.
Fondly, he hummed "I'm not going anywhere tonight." His fingers brushing the strands out of her pretty face and tucking the blanket around her shoulders tighter, concealing her from the cold brush of the night.
And by the time Y/N woke up the next morning, no real recollection of what words were said last night but just the warm memory that she was with Beckett.
NEITHER OF THEM can sleep the night before Beckett leaves for training camp. The impending deadline of the end of their perfect summer vacation spent stuck to each other was coming to a close.
Independently they both had somehow ended up sat on the edge of the dock at the crack ass of dawn. Only a mere hour until Beckett had to leave to make his flight back to Anaheim.
The glower on Y/N's face was evident, her obvious discernment to his departure no short than obvious.
"Stop your frowning." Beckett attempted to lighten the mood, elbowing her softly in the side. Only for him to sigh when she didn't let up. "C'mon, sunshine. I'll see you soon." He coddled.
"When? Christmas?"
And when Beckett grimaced, it was clear it could be awhile until the two saw each other again.
There was silence for a moment, the beautiful sunrise shining on the lake and the noises of nature surround them leaving them to say their mute goodbyes.
Beckett broke the peace, a shy smile painted on his lips. "I think this is the longest I've ever gone without telling you something." His fingers nervously scratching the back of his neck, blue eyes gazing at the ripple of the water.
"What?" Y/N's eyes narrow at her usually cocky best friend's anxiety. Sun gleaming down onto them with each passing minute.
He laughed under his breath, a breathy chuckle although there was really nothing funny about it. His fingers absentmindedly picking at the frayed edges of his hoodie sleeves, eyes fixed on the lake.
"I've been trying to figure out how to say it all summer."
Y/N's heart felt like it sank to her ass, pure anxiety building up inside as he continued.
"Every time I looked at you..." His eyes took the moment to drink her in before shaking his head "I just couldn't."
The girl swallowed, eyes locked in on her best friend, "Beck..."
"Just let me finish." He gave her smile, which is its typical easy, humorous grin expect now it had the frayed edges of nerves. "Because if I don't say it now, I'm gonna get on that plane and spend months regretting not telling you."
With a final deep breath, he met her eyes.
"I've loved you for a long time."
Her breath caught in her chest and she didn't have any thoughts in that moment except for shock.
Beckett let out a soft laugh as he continued "I don't even know when it stopped being a stupid little crush." His striking blue eyes trained on hers, as if trying to scope her reaction. "Maybe it was when we were sixteen and you showed up even more gorgeous. Maybe before that. I just know that over time... you became home to me, and I couldn't imagine life without you."
The sunrise painted the lake all pretty shades of orange and pinks and yet Y/N couldn't seem to tear her eyes away from Beckett.
"Every good thing just makes me want to call you." His following laugh was weak, "God- I want to call you even when the barista makes me that stupid coffee you like so much. You're always the first person I want to tell. Leaving this fucking cabin feels like I'm leaving a part of myself with you."
The breaths rumbling through his chest are shaky with his lasting jitters. He couldn't tell what she was thinking all he knew is that he had to get it all out now.
"I know my life is fucking insane. I know I disappear for months at a time. And I know this is pretty shitty of me to ask of you."
"Beckett-"
"But I'm in love with you, Y/N."
Silence.
She just stared at him, eyes brimming with tears already threatening the stream down her cheeks. Her emotions were at all time high, her mind on an emotional rollercoaster that his confession took on a spin.
Beckett's smile faltered for a moment, panic settling in at the lack of response. "You don't have to say it back," He added quickly, "I just... don't think I could hold that in for any longer."
Y/N surged froward before he could say another word, Her hands shook as they finally found his cheeks.
And she finally kissed him, and not carefully. Not hesitantly. Just years of longing crashing together in one stumbling breath. Their very nerves felt as if they were buzzing with all of their feelings released into the press of lips. Lips meeting softly yet passionately as Beckett's fingers sank into the skin of her waist as if they finally found home while Y/N's digits grasped onto his jaw like she would never let him go again.
When they pulled away, Y/N wasn't the only one with watery eyes. With a sniffle she finally told him what she has been aching to tell him ever since they were little kids with sticky ice cream fingers.
"I am so in love with you." She whispered against his smiling lips- the grin hasn't seemed to leave his face once. "I just always thought you'd outgrow me."
Beckett laughed with an eye-roll at the ridiculous concept, that was impossible "Never.".
It was also impossible for him to not kiss her again, now that he finally could, he probably will never stop. The kiss was slower this time, all smiles and lovely presses of lips that Beckett would happily die in.
Somewhere behind them, past the creaky dock and onto the dusty driveway of their family cabin, a door slammed and a familiar voice called Beckett's name. Neither of them moved for a moment, inevitably they both knew at some point they would have to tear apart.
So with mighty strength, Beckett sighed. "I have to go." he murmured, the murmur making both of their lips rumble.
"I know."
"I'll call you everyday."
"You better."
When he doubtfully pulled away, they shared one last warm smile for their summer full of their ignorance and now full of their unconcealed love. He pressed a final kiss to her forehead, before interlacing their fingers, leading her to the car with him
For the first in what was year, saying goodbye didn't feel like the end.
It felt like their beginning.
this is finally done... I'm not even joking this took me forever and I'm really scared it gonna flop but I hope you loved it as much I love it.
