Ermagherd. Today I received the final mixes for the Written In Sand EP. It’s an odd feeling, these monumentous mid-steps you have to take on the road to completing a big project. I know people release records all the time, but to me, this is a particularly important record. Written In Sand… Our juggernaut, our magnum opus, our first truly legit release. Sort of our, “Release the Kraken” moment. I know we released “I Believe In Beta Lion” in 2012, but to me, those songs were pretty D.I.Y., and with all of our limitations in truly trying to do it ourselves, I feel like the demo isn’t really the best we could do. Don’t get me wrong, I love that CD, but I mixed two of the songs myself and really don’t feel like I did that great of a job. Our friend Dan did mix "Faces & Heels" and to me that's the best track on the demo. Immediately after the demo's release, there was a lot of, “well, if I knew how to do this, we’d do that.” Or “if I had more money or time, I’d do it this way.” Really, my tendency to try to do things all myself is what held it back.
So this CD is a little bit more of a “Do-It-Together” (D.I.T.?) project. We’re gotten some outside help from friends for our album art. Another friend of ours did some auto-tuning for my vocals (again, just gotta let go of the fact that I can’t really sing in tune). Involving people who do mixing (Elliot Richardson) and mastering (Evren Goknar) for a living to take what we do a step further has been a big difference. Also, working with Villains Records (shout out to RC and June) on the process of releasing music is really gonna make me feel like this is the best we can do. Whether or not it’s well received is an entirely different thing. If people were to hate the Written In Sand EP, that’d be fine. At least I wouldn’t have any excuses to give.
So, with the music mixes complete, we’re experimenting with a little bit of sound effects editing with another friend of ours and hopefully add another layer of lush soundscape-yness to our CD that we wouldn’t have been able to pull off on our own. After we add some movie magic into the mix, we get it mastered and prepare it for mass consumption.
