Partially because he very much clings to the idea that he’s somehow less than a person. That being a spirit- something from the Fade means he’s less, wrong, anything that slips so easily from peoples’ minds clearly isn’t meant to be important. It’s what he does that is. (Sorry anon(s)- even after a bit of convincing, it’s still at the back of his mind)

And a lot because it should, in Cole’s mind, be about the other’s wants. What makes them happy should clearly be above him. If he wants to help, he should focus on them, shouldn’t he? So in a lot of cases and especially if directly asked, he’ll bow to what the other party wants- dancing around words that would set it in stone))
