Acting legend Al Pacino circa 1959/1960 in rare photos taken very early in his career at age 19 or 20. Note the handwritten captions he wrote on the back of each photo: "I'm not going---so don't coax me", "It's only money", "I'm giving up smoking after this", and "So? You think you're tough huh?" A trouble-maker as a kid who drank and smoked pot as an adolescent and was bestowed with the nicknames "Sonny," "Pacchi," "Pistachio" and "The Actor" by his friends, he later attended New York's High School of Performing Arts against his mother's wishes (she believed "poor people don't do acting"). Al left home after they had an argument and supported himself by working as a messenger, busboy, janitor, switchboard operator, usher, and postal clerk while appearing at night in basement plays in New York's theatrical underground (his mother died soon after at the untimely age of 43). He also applied to Lee Strasberg's revered Actors Studio during this period, but was rejected (Strasberg allowed him to join a few years later following another audition). Often homeless, Al slept on park benches or friends' sofas, refusing to give up on his dreams. He went on to win a Best Actor Academy Award (with eight additional Oscar nominations), two Tony Awards, five Golden Globe Awards (including the honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2001), two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Emmy Awards, among countless additional accolades for his memorable performances on stage, screen and television.
