To Writers Who Have Deaf Characters:

I am Deaf myself and it is very common that hearing writes misrepresent Deaf people and our experiences. So, I made a list of common misconceptions.

Deaf people cannot read lips word-for-word. Even the best lip readers in the world can only understand 30-45% of words.

Hearing aids do not magically make you hear perfectly. The microphone on the hearing aids pick up sound and amplifies it into the user’s ear. This helps to pick up when someone is talking or a loud noise is made. It only helps with hearing and picking up on cues. It does not magically help you hear perfectly.

Sign Language is not a universal language. For example: In the United States, Deaf people know American Sign Language(or ASL) and people in the United Kingdom use British Sign Language(or BSL).

Shouting/talking slower does not help Deaf people understand you. This causes the face to become distorted and it makes it harder to lipread. It also causes speech to becomes more muffled.

Not all Deaf people hate being Deaf, many of us love being Deaf. One of the largest misconceptions I see in Deaf characters is that we do not want to be Deaf and we want to be “cured” and be able to hear. This is extremely untrue. In Deaf Culture, we are proud and actually love being Deaf. We are not searching for a cure and we are DEFINITELY not looking pitty.

This is not exactly a misconception, but it is still important. Please do not refear to a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person as “hearing impaired.” This infers that the person is “broken and needs to be fixed.” When that is most definitely not the case.

Last but not least, YES DEAF PEOPLE CAN DRIVE! Deaf and Hard of Hearing people are actually more cautious and observant while driving.

Addition:

. When writing a hoh character pls remember that D/deaf/hoh people can have varying degrees of hearing loss, and therefore have different ways of interpreting speech. For instance, I lip-read to pick up some speech sounds I miss which helps me understand what is being said, therefore I’d be able to tell if someone was talking to me but I’m not always able to understand them. So if you’re writing a character with a specific degree of hearing loss you should do some reaserch into what that would mean.

. Do some reading on the difference between big D and little d deaf

. If you’re writing a deaf child character please do some research about deaf child development, mainstream vs. deaf schools, and accommodations for D/deaf/hoh students.

. Don’t differ speech and sign language by changing font/style etc. Write it the same as speech.

. Make your media accessable! If we can’t access it you’re doing it wrong!

other notes from personal experience: 

 -things/people can offten be too loud while wearing hearing aides and its the bane of my existence but people dont seem to get that 

 -i almost never use my hearing aides outside of school/other places id definitely need hear aides 

 -dealing with loud noises for long periods of time will make one tired even if your just sitting and listening (not arritating like in the first example but loud, this happens every time i go to plays/musicals but movies are often fine) 

 -as said in the ad. above people will be deaf on verying dagrees (personally im deaf on both sides, moderate to severe) despite this with my hearing aides i can pick up almost anything 

 -if someone asks you to repeat yourself (and please do) its most likely because they didn’t actually understand what you were saying and not because you were too quiet 

 -also its near impossible to know what theyre saying in songs first time around without lyrics (if its live your hecked) 

-theres so many ways that someone can become deaf (they file under birth things, to injury, or something else) -this means that your whole family can have perfect hearing except for one (this is the case for me) 

 -yes deaf people can listen to music with headphones on(i didnt buy wireless headphones just to hear the beat dude, also yeah someone seriously asked that and i died inside) also we’re most certainly not wearing our hearing aides while we do this, have you tried putting a speaker next to a microphone? 

 -so many people, they think they can talk in whatever volume when i dont have my hearing aides on, so many (i cant read lips and dont yell in my ear) 

-literally everyone assumes deaf people can read sign language, even interperators 

-despite all this i cant really get mad because disabilites are never talked about (not in school or anything) thats what i can think of for now

Any D/deaf/HoH followers have anything to add to this? Things I can think of off hand

-dialects. Sign language has dialects. Not just ASL/BSL/CSL etc but dialects within those that differ slightly in signing height and other minor differences. So even if two people are both using say ASL, but they may notice an “accent” in each other if they learned ASL in different regions of the USA.

-some signs are not the same or even similar between various languages like say ASL vs CSL and slang terms… like someone I know who uses CSL was talking to someone who used ASL and mostly they understood each other but the one signing in ASL laughed when she signed about how hard everyone is working. Using the sign for “working” with the tapping the arm slightly higher than you should is a slang way to say “fucking” so they got the message of “everyone here is fucking so hard”. The only other language I’ve heard of something like this is depending on dialect of Tagalog the same word can mean fish or penis. You can imagine the jokes about how people in the one area really love their fish. I know sign language has other regional dialect slang things like that but I’m not fluent enough to know them

- don’t confuse deaf/HOH with auditory processing issues. They aren’t the same. One is something physically different with the hearing system, the other is the brain being delayed or having difficulty with interpreting those sounds as words. They aren’t the same thing.
