“uh ---” kate stammered as she tried not to draw attention to the numerous burn marks she’d left on the table before her. given the shift in time and the fact that she had only brought so many trick arrows with her, she’d had to get a little creative. unfortunately, that creativity seemed to come with quite a few fire hazards. “in my defense, they really shouldn’t make these tables so flammable.”

AS SHE FULLY WITHDREW her hand from the object he looked around the lab table for something that he could cover it with before he turned his gaze on kate and offered a grin that tugged at the corner of his lips. “it was, or is going to be, a flash bomb but it does a little to much exploding with fire and less flashing of light at the moment.” he admitted. “flash bomb with a few different upgrades but that’s where i got the details wrong and have to start over.”

kate knew a thing or two about tinkering with tech that you weren’t entirely familiar with. while clint was definitely the one with all the trick arrows under his belt, she’d helped on quite a few when they’d been in new york together. “great,” she said, pulling a face at that. her eyes cut back to the sphere and she swallowed thickly. “so you’re just... building bombs in the basement of a school? that sounds really safe and not alarming at all.”

“wow—- you think you’re big shit around here,” he muttered towards the woman. it would be hypocritical of him to say no one really needed coffee when even he needed a pick me up. “just hurry up, will you?”

“i don’t think i’m big shit,” she informed him as she turned back towards the coffee pot. it wasn’t working properly, which was just making the situation even worse. “i just don’t respond well when guys i don’t even know cop an attitude first thing in the morning.”

HE SEEMED AMUSED BY her statement considering she had just entered his work space, and there for was sort of sneaking up on him? only he had seen it coming and saved her from losing a hand so it was probably a good thing he noticed right? “if i hadn’t snuck up on you, you’d be missing fingers or a hand right now, so was it so bad.” he reminded with ease as he set the tablet down. “but maybe i should cover it when i’m not actually working on it to avoid accidents?” he suggested.

subconsciously, kate flexed her fingers at her side, his words making her quite thankful he’d managed to stop her. the last thing she wanted was to lose any appendages. while she’d heard of one armed archers, they were rarely better than those with two. “that’s probably a smart idea.” swallowing hard, she took a few steps away from the object, just in case. “what is it, anyway?”

A SMALL CHUCKLE ECHOED in the back before luke made himself known and began to move from the shadows that had been illuminated only by the tablet in the palm of his hand. “i wouldn’t touch that if i were you, still working on that one and it’s not exactly stable. i don’t want to be responsible for dismembering, or death.” he pipped up quickly before the orb like object could be touched by the sudden arrival of his company.

while kate had been taught from the time she was old enough to walk that she should ‘look with her eyes, not her hands’ all of that had gone out the window as soon as she became a superhero. her desire to press the big red button and investigate things that were obviously better left undisturbed had gotten her into trouble more often than not. and yet, here she was, reaching out for another forbidden object. before she could even get close to touching it however, a voice sounded behind her, causing her to jump. “hasn’t anyone ever told you not to sneak up on people like that?” kate asked, trying to regain her composure. well, this looked bad.

“—–are you gonna hog up the coffee machine the whole morning or are you gonna move?” he muttered to the shorter girl as she stood in front of the machine in the cafeteria.

kate let out a heavy sigh and turned on her heels, obviously not very interested in this guy’s sass so early in the morning. “i’m gonna give you the benefit of the doubt, because you obviously haven’t encountered me in the morning without my caffeine before. but i’m gonna need you to back off and let me get my brew on, 'kay?”

Maybe that was the reason why the thief had become more reckless over the years. “ Oh, come on, we both know my luck has something to do with this.” Felica said, gesturing the arrow. It would be naive to think the thief was going to change her reckless behavior just because the other told her to do but the raven-haired girl grinned anyway,“ Point taken. ”

“i’m going to pretend like that wasn’t some sort of jab, because i really don’t feel like cleaning blood off of this rooftop again.” granted, it had been her own blood after a particularly bad run in with a faulty trick arrow, but felicia didn’t need to know that. “is there a reason you’re lurking? or are you just doing that weird voyeur thing that people who come up here tend to do?”

“ thanks! it’s actually more of an eggplant color than just purple. i’m glad you like it though. i made it all by hand in my bedroom in like a week. “ she said with a proud smile. the blonde laughed. “ i don’t know if they’re a thing but they’re my thing. i don’t have any fancy super powers like a lot of the people here. just my wit, some martial arts training, and a utility belt. so i’ll take anything i can use to throw off the thugs. “

“well, hey. if the superhero thing doesn’t work out, at least we can make a killing in the cosplay community,” kate said with a shrug, her lips curling into an amused smile. it was a little shocking to her, just how man heroes had created their own costumes with little outside help. hers wasn’t overly complicated, but there were some that boggled even her mind. “you don’t need fancy powers to be a bad ass.”
