DART1220 Visual Effect -Progress of creating a space environment.

It was hard at the beginning in making a spaceship-like object out of simple polygons. It looks so different when using a different rendering software like Arnold and Maya software. After adding a stars background, the environment looks more complete. I added 3 spots lighting even though I don’t really think of where does the light source come from tbh.

Week 2

Painting using non art supply. In this case, I used food (ketchup, instance coffee) and painted on a paper bag (non art supply material). I also used paper to roll it in a straw as a paint brush.

Exegesis

Being the 1st AC in the crew, I was responsible to ensure that the camera is on the right focus when shooting. I also participated in the preparation of props and contribute ideas of the preproduction. I also supported the camera operation of the DoP and the director by controlling the focus of shots. We carried out some camera tests as well on the shooting day.

One of the biggest challenges during preproduction was the casting of actors and the preparation of props. We decided to shoot indoor even though the original movie is in an open and natural outdoor environment. We used curtains and a lot of tapes to prevent the outer light from entering. In the preparation of the props, especially the fake fire, we tried different materials for flame and multiple ways to combine the cellophane with decoration lights. Moreover, when we looked for the main character online, we have encountered that the selected actor didn't reply our message in the expected time which we need a back-up of another preferred actor.

During the shooting, the lighting is the main element that we mostly concern as it plays an important role in the visual image of the movie. As we decided to shoot the movie in black and white, which minimize the problem that would cause when shooting in colour. Realized that some colours are identical when turning into BW, we used lighting tools to make a greater contrast and help separation with different objects shown in the film. However, it is also challenging to ensure the lighting is in good contrast with a range of tones. The most time-consuming part is to make sure the light with sufficient white balance. The unnecessary shadow can be annoying as the detailed adjustment is needed especially the direction and angle of light source. This can ensure that the shadow is cast on the right position that wouldn't cover that actors face.

We had a various experiment on the lighting on the shooting day which we didn't expect it could be procrastinating our schedule. It is tricky to make the image not too light or too dim but at the right point to reveal details. However, some shots are still failed to capture the focus, particularly in one scene the camera pans. In terms of making the adapted scene look realistic, we spent time comparing the image in the movie to our actual scene by trying a various set of props. We did spend some time in the scene of snapping a pocket watch as well. To achieve the spinning shot, we finally figured out to tie a fishing string to the watch in order to make a natural spin. However, we failed to hide the string, and which eventually revealed it in the movie.

Through this project of the classic film adaptation, we worked collaboratively and help with each crew member and gained some practical filmmaking skills which will be helpful in the future assessment.

Week 7

With the introduction of various lighting equipment, we have a chance to try different lights and shoot some photos using only a light source. We tried to shoot photos in black and white and tested out the saturation, contrast and highlight. I tried varied roles such as light checking and cameraman. With the collaborative ideas from the whole group and followed the reference photo provided in class, we created some interesting scene to make the shooting process fun to play around. We also shoot a few short clips and placed the lighting from different angles, such as tying a shoelace, making a killing scene, a character looking at other direction, and recreate of the reference photo.

Week 5

For the preparation of the next assessment, a classmate and I adapted the news shown in class as the base story to develop a new crime story. As this is just the starting point, we did a rough beginning with our initial thoughts and visualise a particular scene which also helps with the exploration of ideas. I noticed that it is hard to think of an engaging plot as the news of Tromp family includes so many vague clue and an open ending. However, at the same time, it allows us to embrace our creativity and create an original story. We attempted to write a story on a family vacation which they, unfortunately, turn out to be a miserable quarrel, and end up the family are going separate path. However, considered the lack of interesting characters setting and fascinating plot, we decided to change our story of a drug cook who has trouble with the gangster which he has no choice but to escape from home. In this class, we used to mainly explore new ideas and figure out the formatting of screenwriting.

Week 3

This week we were shooting on a stalking scene and tries to make a complete story. I was acted like a victim and participated in the entire scene. Due to the limitation of time, our group can only come up with a rough development of the story. Considered the perspectives from the stalker and the victims, we shoot the angle and framing by using character’s point of view, such as follow the character from the back and pan to character's face. Therefore the camera movement some include shaking and medium close up shots. The challenge of this practice is the arrangement of the shoot as we lack a complete development of the plot and we changed the ideas a few times. During the shooting, we tried a various type of framing and camera movement in order to make a mysterious atmosphere.

Week 2

In this week, we shoot some photos of a girl rushing to school scene and used the shot sequences we have prepared. We shot in the Webster building and asked a few random students to help acting as pedestrians. I was in part of the video as an actress and also helped the camera shooting. In this exercise, we were asked to draw a story broad of 8 scenes depicting a girl who is in hurry and runs to the street with an open ending. We came up with a few possible situations that she would encounter at the end. For the limitations of the shooting process, since our ideas are quite spontaneous so we had to test them out immediately without too much planning.
