"In a highly competitive color guard team, a difficult toss eludes a stressed out freshman. Will she be able to learn it by this Saturday’s competition?"

This storyboard is about something I dedicated 7 years of my life to: color guard! I've had this board laying around for a few months because I meant to go back and fix some shots and clean it up more, but...I kind of got burned out/distracted by another storyboard idea. C'est la vie. Now, a bit of backstory behind this board! Color guard is very personal to me! From ages 11 to 18 I was in parades and shows almost weekly during the school year. I found my love of performing through it, and have many fond memories that I've always wanted to put into a story. When I transitioned from middle school guard to high school guard, I had a hard time keeping up with the higher expectations. I struggled with the complex tosses, and I legitimately thought I'd spill my brains out from some of those crazy flag moves. This story is inspired by this difficult transition I went through, although this character is way more determined that I ever was! If what happened in this board actually happened to 14 year old me, she'd be crying and running far, far away from the field!

OC-tober 1: seasons

but not every day so it’ll take me like two or three months

i’d do every other day or something but i just really love the prompts and have good ideas for every one of them

Guard question: do you get along with the Captain of your team? How do you feel about them?

For the team that I march on, yeah. i’m not super great friends with them, but we don’t have any hard feelings towards eachother and we laugh a lot so thats good

For the team I coach, i think she’s pretty chill and we relate to a lot of the same things, and she’s really good at calming the guard down when we get rowdy. she might be a bit hesitant towards me since she’s still a little attached to her old coach though

my junior year my rifle had a crack down the neck that was held together by the gold duct tape we used to decorate our rifles that year. i got real good at not dropping that year in fear that it would snap at any moment. there was another rehearsal where the team broke three wooden flags in the span of five minutes

Winter: Tell your funniest guard story.

oh jeez i have so many… there’s the classic “Kat’s naked in the back of the bus!!” (the drink, naked), the squeeziest squeeze you ever squoze, chewbacca tiddies, Korinna breaking a light at state, putting our stone head statue props around our band directors yard after state, covering our drum major’s car with animal crackers, the same drum major performing a run with a cracker on his forehead, theres so many that i can hardly remember them all or even which was the funniest

Single: Describe the least dedicated person on your guard.

for the sake of these next two, i’m going to go with the team i’m currently coaching. the least dedicated person on my team isn’t necessarily lacking dedication, but she shows it in a way that isn’t productive. she’s constantly asking questions seconds after i’ve already answered them, not always paying attention when i’m giving her corrections, and doesn’t practice during the time i give her. she loves the activity, she just doesn’t know how to rehearse properly yet.

Double: Describe the most dedicated person on your guard.

she’s not the best spinner yet, and she talks a lot, but she is super enthusiastic about being in color guard. i was a bit worried about her at the beginning of the season, but shes gotten better with rehearsal etequitte and succeeding at the skills im teaching her. she brings in a speaker because mine isn’t very loud, she makes snacks for the team, and she suggested makeup ideas to try for our football game. she really loves the activity, and i think if she sticks with it she can do great things.
