My character is half black and half white. However, she isn't light skinned; she still has a pretty dark complexion. I know there is discrimination even within the black community about skin color, and it is sometimes hard for mixed people to find where they fit in best. Does this still apply to mixed people who aren't light skinned? I'm just trying to go about this the best way I possibly can. Thank you

Mixed Race: Colorism and Identity 

Your character might have identify issues from micro aggressions faced from both White, Black and other People of Color. I know mixed people who’ve been denied their “mixedness” for not being light enough or simply not meeting the standards of what they believe a mixed person should look like, usually in regards to hair and/or features.

With mixed Black girls, that’s usually 3 type curly hair and beige to light brown skin.

Folks might tell her “You’re not mixed; you’re just Black” because apparently if a mixed person doesn’t look the proper blending of the races they’re mixed with, then they’re not allowed to claim both sides and must pick the race they look most like.

There could be issues when it comes to the White parent as well; if she’s alone with them, people might assume she’s adopted, or question “that’s really your mom/dad?” There’s even been cases where people have called the police on parents of mixed race children, assuming they kidnapped them, though this usually happens with a Black parent and a light/white passing kid, the reverse has happened too.

Even if people can’t tell she’s mixed from first glance, she may still have the identity issues that comes with being mixed, such as being made to “choose” or fetishizing and exotification when people realize she’s mixed, but if she isn’t particularly light, and afro hair and facial features means she mostly passes as Black over mixed (Black & white), she may face these to a lesser extent.
