- there are small towns everywhere. tiny hamlets with 8 houses and no shops. only the people who live there know that they exist
- the spring rain falls heavy as the sun comes out from behind thick clouds. you wait for there to be a rainbow, but one never appears.
- gaping glacial valleys pocket the countryside. many of them are such strange shapes that they almost look like twisted faces staring at you, trying to escape from the earth.
- dead leaves from the fall are a constant presence. all the leaves mix together, leaves from last year, the year before, the year before. no one can tell them apart.
- the farther you get into the looming hills, the deeper you get into redneck country. these people long for georgia, south carolina, kentucky. but they’re trapped here. might as well fly a confederate flag to show how badly they need to leave.
- you’re cliff jumping in the gorges with your friends on a bright july day. one of them goes under, but doesn’t come back up. you search for days, weeks, months, but there is no trace.
- lakes and towns have names that come from the haudenosaunee people. names like cayuga, seneca, irondiquoit. it’s one of our only reminders that it’s their land we’re standing on.
- the signs for hill cumorah don’t let you forget that this is evangelized holy land. they didn’t call rochester the burned over district for nothing.
- you see lake after lake after lake, seemingly never ending, winding through the mountains. they are all connected, but they are dead, fill to the brim with acid rain. nothing can live down there. but, out of the corner of your eye, you see a flicker. you are being watched.
