Celebrating @brad-t‘s first place victory at the Beyblade tournament this weekend. Pure happiness.
I did a lot of things during my two weeks in Japan, but one of the many things I was looking forward to the most was playing and meeting people from the Japanese Beyblade community. The new series–Beyblade Burst–just launched earlier this year, so it was an exciting time to be visiting! I cannot say enough about how positive an experience it was for me, in spite of any frustrations about the language barrier.
Off and on all week I’ve been working on a report for the WBO, so if you’re interested for any of the more specific details and video, please take a look!: http://worldbeyblade.org/Thread-My-Experience-with-the-Japanese-Beyblade-Community-Part-1-Nov-Dec-2015
Yesterday was the seventh anniversary of the World Beyblade Organization, a huge milestone for a fan-run organization like this. We had a few cool things to announce, like:
A brand new logo (seen above)
A ton of new prizes, including our new Awakening Amaterios campaign that will reward players who consistently have the most consecutive wins in their local tournaments with the rare (and expensive!) Amaterios Aero Assault.
T-shirts, finally!
There’s more cool stuff too, so check out the full news post if you’re interested!
Came in second place at our Beyblade Burst tournament today, winning a string of matches against some really great players. Feeling pretty happy about it! I’m here with my best friend @oleanderblossom.
I never got around to writing about last month’s event, but I’ll be doing my best to catch up on metagame analysis and reviews over the next two weeks. Stay tuned!
My Amaterios Aero Assault arrived! Will post battle impressions as soon as I can!
me win i win the beybattle
Hosted Beyblade Bursts Onto the Scene in Montreal today! Was a really awesome event, especially since I got to give away 15 Beyblades. And we got to do it at my office, which is an amazing space. Even better, my office manager competed!
Was thrilled to see the new Beyblades were well-received and that we were able to add a few Bladers to the community today. Looking forward to see how Beyblade Burst’s metagame will unfold in my home city!
My pics came out pretty badly, but we took some cool video footage, so look forward to that.
キタ━━━(゜ Д゚)━━━!!!!!
I finally won the rare Beyblade Amaterios Aero Assault!
I am actually almost crying.
This Beyblade, comprised of three exclusive parts, is only available through the online Rare Bey Get Battle game. The exact odds of getting it are unknown, but it took me 13 attempts over three months, and there are some people who’ve played upwards of 50 times without winning it.
It’s so rare that many Bladers who get it are too scared to even use it. I admit that makes me a bit nervous, but ... more than anything, I want to see how it fares in battle. Look forward to an in-depth review in the upcoming weeks!
Had an amazing time at the Beyblade Burst tournament in Toronto yesterday! I’ll have a full tournament report up sometime soon — in the meantime, please enjoy this wonderful selfie taken by my friend @cadney.
Beyblade Tournament –Montreal, QC – October 25th
If you’re in Montreal, be sure to come to our first Beyblade Burst tournament at Parc la Fontaine! I’ll be giving away all of the above Beyblades, and there’ll be prizes and hopefully hot chocolate if I can figure out how to get it there.

To get a sense of what to expect, here’s a tournament we did in Toronto:
After reading the history with Beyblade post, I got a lot of nostalgia at seeing the Off the Chain banner again. Sometimes I forget how long (if only tangentially, but still) I've been involved with Beyblade as a community. Good times, my man.
My graphic design skills peaked at 15 years old.
Glad you liked it, man, and happy I could’ve created spaces for you to have fun all these years. :) I don’t know what it is about Beyblade, but it never seems to leave once you’ve dove in deep.
Wyvern Armed Massive was my most anticipated release of Beyblade Burst. It’s purple and blue! It comes with a purple BeyLauncher! It’s a dragon! And most importantly, it’s a Defense-type. Defense is...
Just completed a huge update of my Wyvern Armed Massive review, which I had originally, stupidly, panned.
In reality, Wyvern has great applications as a Defense-type, and you can read about them in the updated article.
Posted by kurokawa_nue on Twitter, this image shows B-17 Odin Central Blow (Attack-type Booster) and B-19 Burst BeyStadium (dropping October 16) and B-20 Horusudo Spread Edge (Stamina-type Booster) (dropping November 14).
Burst BeyStadium analysis
Of all the images, to easiest to understand just from looking at it is the Burst BeyStadium. As its name — which I had always assumed was just a placeholder name until seeing it — implies, this focus seems designed to encourage bursting over other kinds of finishes.
This is ... something that’s not super-necessary, since bursting is already quite common. And these “secondary” stadiums tend to generally be pretty gimmicky and not very good. This one is certainly gimmicky:
The unscrewable yellow spike walls are obviously designed to cause bursts, or make the Beyblade vulnerable to bursting
The ridge seems to not be a perfect circle, but actually moves closer to the edge of the stadium where the exits are, which will make it easier to KO Beyblades
That said, I actually think this stadium looks pretty fun! And if you hate the spikes, you can remove some or all of them. I’m a bit worried that the strange ridge will make it basically impossible to play in this, but hope springs eternal.
I don’t want to make guesses about the performance of Odin (silver one) and Horusudo (purple one) since it’s impossible to know just from a single-angle photo, but Odin looks sick and Horusudo is WHAT.
As always, look forward to full reviews here. :)
P.S. If you’re wondering what the absent B-18 is, it’s the Beyblade VS Play Set, which includes a red Valkyrie, violet Spriggan, 2 Launchergrips, 2 Light Launchers, and a BeyStadium Standard Type.
Reconsidering Wyvern, and the Amazing Active Defense
In my review of B-14 Wyvern Armed Massive published the other day, I largely focused on how disappointing Armed was. And I stand by everything I wrote about it.
However, when it came to discussing the rest of the parts, I quickly dismissed its Layer:
Wyvern doesn’t appear to have any use as a Layer; its Stamina is too poor and it is too susceptible to bursting to serve as a Defense-type.
This was a serious error.
Wyvern actually finds success in one particular type of combination; a gameplay style that hadn’t really been discovered until after I had left the Beyblade community. It’s called active defense.
The types of Beyblades
Before we get into that, let’s do a quick recap of Beyblade’s types. Like many other games, Beyblade has a strengths-and-weaknesses system that works sort of like rock paper scissors. Unlike many other games, however, Beyblade’s types aren’t based on arbitrary multipliers; they are the inevitable consequences of the physics of Beyblade.
(Below: an image taken from beyblade.takaratomy.jp showing the different Beyblade types.)
Attack-types are designed to either knock-out or burst the opponent. They typically move quickly through the BeyStadium, enabled by high-friction flat tips. However, this increase in friction means that Attack-types don’t spin for very long. They typically aim to end the battle as quickly as possible.
Currently, the top-tier Attack-type is Valkyrie Heavy Accel. It’s extremely difficult for any Beyblade to withstand a direct hit from it early in the battle.
Stamina-types are in it for the long haul. They are typically lightweight with sharp tips in order to minimize friction against the BeyStadium floor, and are as round and smooth-edged as possible. All of this allows them to continue spinning despite taking constant hits.
However, because of their lightweight and lack of friction, they are easily knocked around — and out of — the BeyStadium. So while the top-tier Deathscyther Spread Survive can spin longer than any other, it is easily KO’d or bursted by any Attack-type master.
Defense-types, on the other hand, are designed to withstand exactly those kinds of hits. They’re typically heavy and have ball-shaped tips that help them maintain grip against the BeyStadium floor.
Or so the classic school of thought, and Takara-Tomy’s marketing messaging, would lead you to believe. The truth is, even the top-tier Kerbeus Heavy Survive (which, yes, uses a Stamina-type Driver) can’t withstand a direct hit from a perfectly-shot Valkyrie Heavy Accel. If it’s not knocked out, it has a high likelihood of bursting.
But this is only the prescribed way of playing Defense. As is usually the case, Beyblade’s marketing materials can never be trusted to give an accurate indication of a Beyblade’s performance. It is only research by avid Bladers that ever reveals the truth.
A while back, the Beyblade community came up with a subcategory to describe this type of gameplay: passive defense. And it was necessary because a new style of play, active defense, had gained popularity.
Active Defense-types
Active defense Beyblades use what would typically be considered Attack-type tips, causing them to constantly move throughout the BeyStadium. This has two advantages:
The opposing Blader cannot simply aim for the center and expect to hit you.
The impact of hits that do connect is reduced exponentially.
Passive defense Beyblades end the match typically by outspinning the Attack-type Beyblade by a small margin.
When including active defense, the current top-tier Defense-type is Kerbeus Heavy Accel. It is able to deflect most hits and doesn’t suffer a ton of recoil.
But I’m pretty sure that Wyvern Heavy Accel has supplanted it.
While Kerbeus’ notched design is decent at deflecting incoming attacks from Valkyrie, it isn’t very consistent. There are often large impacts that put both Beyblades in a dangerous position, or worse, result in Kerbeus being burst.
While Wyvern’s spiked design looks vicious, those spikes never make any impact because of the fact that all currently-released Beyblade Burst tops are right-spin only.
What actually happens is that the slopes of Wyvern’s spikes serve to parry incoming hits. When Valkyrie’s spike comes into contact with Wyvern, there are two likely outcomes:
Valkyrie hits the outside of Wyvern’s spike, resulting in minimal impact, or
Valkyrie hits the empty space between Wyvern’s spikes, causing Valkyrie to be pushed away
While Wyvern will often be pushed away by Valkyrie as well, this rarely seemed to translate into a win for Valkyrie. After playing dozens of matches, Valkyrie Heavy Accel only won a handful of times — once by knockout, a handful of times by outspin, and never by burst. Wyvern Heavy Accel defeated it in more than 80% of matches, even though it was always shot roughly five seconds earlier than Valkyrie Heavy Accel.
Generally, Wyvern Heavy Accel would outspin it with just a few seconds to spare, though there were a handful of times where it was able to burst Valkyrie Heavy Accel.
Put Wyvern onto a stationary Driver like Survive, Defense, or Massive, and it’s a different story: Valkyrie Heavy Accel can easily burst it, knock it out, or simply outspin it by circling the outer edge of the stadium until it slows down — referred to as stalling.
It’s the particular combination of constant movement and the ability to parry incoming attacks that make this mix of parts so potent. Its major weakness, however, is its lack of versatility: if you guess incorrectly and your opponent uses Deathscyther Spread Survive, your chances of defeating it with Wyvern Heavy Accel for low. Your best bet is to shoot as strong as possible and hope to defeat it by stalling.
In the opening of my Wyvern Armed Massive review, I wrote:
Defense is in need of a buff, after-all; even though Defense-types should theoretically handle Attack-types very well, Valkyrie’s smashing power is so strong that surviving a well-aimed shot is nigh impossible.
Unfortunately, Wyvern Armed Massive simply doesn’t deliver. If you were only interested in purchase advice, you can stop reading here. Unless you really love the purple BeyLauncher (as I do), you can pass on this one.
One of the most interesting aspects of Beyblade is that unlike trading card games and video games, its gameplay is determined by physical objects. Having worked on a project similar to Beyblade, I can say that it’s very difficult to predict what a top will perform like until you actually manufacture it and test it.
What this means is that Beyblade is not so much defined by its designers as it is by its players’ diligence. Their determination to research and discover unusual combinations of parts that work well in often surprisingly specific situations.
In this case, I didn’t do my due diligence. Wyvern is a huge buff to Defense-types; it provides a consistent method of defeating the most fearsome Attack-type customization in the game. It just didn’t manifest in the way that I expected.
Beyblade Burst Review: B-14 Wyvern Armed Massive + “The Disk Problem”
Wyvern Armed Massive was my most anticipated release of Beyblade Burst. It’s purple and blue! It comes with a purple BeyLauncher! It’s a dragon!
And most importantly, it’s a Defense-type. Defense is in need of a buff, after-all; even though Defense-types should theoretically handle Attack-types very well, Valkyrie’s smashing power is so strong that surviving a well-aimed shot is nigh impossible.
Does Wyvern Armed Massive change the metagame? Or will Valkyrie be allowed run amok until, at least, the next release?
Layer: Wyvern
Weight: 7 grams
While Wyvern’s seven-spiked design might look aggressive, don’t be deceived: it’s a defensive powerhouse, and provides a reliable counter to Valkyrie when used in the proper customizations.
Because all currently-released Beyblade Burst products are right-spin only, the tips of Wyvern’s spikes never strike the opposing Beyblade.
My favourite combination is Wyvern Heavy Accel. While it may use an Attack-type tip, its goal is the same as any Defense-type: to avoid being knocked-out or burst, and outspin the opposing Attack-type at the end of the battle.
This type of Defense-type play is referred to as active defense, and accomplishes two goals:
The opposing Blader cannot simply aim for the center and expect to hit you.
The impact of hits that do connect is reduced exponentially.
That said, Wyvern Heavy Accel tends to win battles by razor-thin margins. If you’re worried that your launch is weaker than your opponent’s, you might be better-served with Wyvern Heavy Survive. You can use a reasonably-worn Survive for added grip to the stadium floor.
This combo holds up reasonably well against Valkyrie Heavy Accel, but is a bit of a sitting duck since it tends to stay in the center of the BeyStadium. Talented Attack-type players may be able to burst or KO it early in the match.
And what of the other top-tier defensive Layer, Kerbeus? I would say I don’t have high hopes for its continued use. While there’s potentially a niche combination that has yet to be discovered — or relies on to-be-released parts — the fact is that compared to Wyvern’s effective parrying, the potential recoil of Kerbeus’ larger spikes just doesn’t seem worth it.
While Wyvern appears to take the mantle of the new Defense-type Layer of choice, the same can’t be said of the rest of the parts in this release.
Disk: Armed
Weight: 19 grams
As the previous sentence probably spoiled: Armed sucks.
That’s unfortunate, considering Armed is arguably the most highly-anticipated part of this package, due to its bulky appearance implying a heavy weight. In actuality, it’s quite light: flipping it over reveals that most of it is hollowed out.
But the reason it feels particularly disappointing goes beyond it failing to fend of Valkyrie. There’s also an issue here that speaks to a pervasive issue in Burst’s part design thus far — one it’s inherited from its 17-year-old plastic predecessors.
Currently, there are six Disks released: Wing, Spread, Central, Heavy, Oval, and now Armed.
Armed’s lightness, combined with a bulky shape that adds air resistance, and the fact that all Drivers are the same height — making Disk on Layer contact very uncommon — mean that Armed has effectively no use in competitive play.
In fact, only Heavy and Spread have shown to be good choices for any particular type of combo. Heavy is the Disk of choice for Attack and Defense-types, whereas the longest-spinning combination of Deathscyther Spread Survive relies on Spread to increase stamina and reduce the likelihood of bursting.
Back in the very first generation of Beyblades, weight disks generally came in three varieties — Heavy, Balance, and Wide, in varying shapes and sizes as the series went on. Balance was almost never used, but Heavy and Wide were quite popular.
(Pictured: Ten Heavy, Ten Balance, and Ten Wide, which were the standard-issue Weight Disks for the V, V2, and GT generations of plastic Beyblades.)
However, Weight Disks were never designed to be headline items, unlike the Disks in Burst. They were simply there to give and distribute weight across the top. They were solely functional requirements.*
Burst seems to have higher aspirations for them, but Heavy and Spread are so clearly better that it’s hard to perceive the others as anything more than junk parts.
In particular, I think coming out of the gate with a disk called Heavy that weighs more than every other, as its defining characteristic, was a bad idea. The heaviest Disk will always be a dominant choice, and its compact shape has almost no drawbacks.
This is all especially frustrating when we take a good look at Armed and the previous Disk release, Oval, that came with Deathscyther Oval Accel.
Both look impressive from above, but viewing them from underneath shows just how little metal is actually being used. If these parts were closer to Heavy in weight, they could be competitive options existing in a system of advantages and tradeoffs. Instead, they’re junk.
And I get it, not every part is good. In fact, releases that become dominant in their categories tend to come few and far between. That’s just part of Beyblade. But they should at least do something. They should change the game in a tangible way, for better or worse.
Otherwise, don’t bother introducing so much variety in the first place. Just give us decent ones all the time instead.
Driver: Massive
Weight: 6 grams
While it’s possible that a later-released part could unlock some potential in Massive, the outlook isn’t rosy. Its Stamina is incredibly poor; so much so, that Valkyrie Heavy Accel can roam around the outside of the stadium and finish it off late in the match. This makes it fundamentally useless as a Defense-type Driver, since all the opposing player need do to defeat is change their approach.
To add insult to injury, it doesn’t seem to have better Defense than a worn Survive Driver, and the spikes around its perimeter serve to wittle its Stamina down even further.
Conclusion: Armed and Massive disappoint, but Wyvern introduces a new dimension to Defense-type play
It’s a shame that just like Deathscyther Oval Accel, this release’s only redeeming part is its Layer. And while the availability of the BeyLauncher in this set — and available separately in red — is appreciated, it seems that the technical issues within it haven’t been adequately addressed.
But Wyvern immensely strengthens the positioning of Defense in the metagame. Anyone looking to build a stable of tournament-ready combinations will want to add this to their arsenal.
UPDATE October 8, 2015: This piece originally dismissed each part in Wyvern Armed Massive as useless, which was an extremely premature conclusion, which I addressed in my post Reconsidering Wyvern, and the Amazing Active Defense.
Additionally, I previously claimed that Valkyrie Heavy Accel could out-stall Wyvern Heavy Survive, but I wasn’t able to replicate that result beyond my inital play sessions. Thusly, I’ve written on the merits of Wyvern Heavy Survive as well.
* There were a few types of “special” Weight Disks from Random Boosters and special event packages, most of which were useless, but two of which — Wide Defense and Wide Survive — ended up supplanting all others in almost all competitive combinations. But we’re at the beginning of Burst and the situation is already this bad.
