from may, in white pine and devotions, mary oliver
We're always rationally explaining and articulating things, but we're at our most intelligent in the moment just before we start to explain or articulate. Great art occurs, or doesn't, in that instant. What we turn to art for is precisely this moment when we know something, we feel it, but we can't articulate it because it's too complex and multiple. But the knowing in such moments, though happening without language is real. I'd say this is what art is for, to remind us that this other sort of knowing is not only real, but is superior to our usual conceptual productive way.

Emily Dickinson, The Collected Poems
"It's not the weight you carry but how you carry it— books, bricks, grief—it's all in the way you embrace it, balance it, carry it when you cannot, and would not, put it down." So I went practicing. Have you noticed? Have you heard the laughter that comes, now and again, out of my startled mouth? How I linger to admire, admire, admire the things of this world that are kind, and maybe also troubled—roses in the wind, the sea geese on the steep waves, a love to which there is no reply?
