“Combined painting with performative action, again merging the poetic with the political”

Alÿs similarly combined painting with performative action, again merging the poetic with the political. The artist meticulously repainted sixty yellow median strips on a road in the former American Panama Canal Zone, the territory joining the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In this case, Alÿs created a “found” painting in a public space charged with memories of past political conflicts. The gesture of wielding the brush became an act of healing in a traumatized territory.

This was a group project about making a piece of art that can be used for an exposition in the Arenbergschouwburg, Antwerp. Arenberg is a place where you can see theatre, music, performances, etc. I worked together with another student from 'Visual Arts' who is specialized in videos and other stuff. It was a nice cooperation! There has been also an exposition of our work together with other student projects in Campus Congres (campus of Visual Arts), Antwerp.

This video is inspired by the artist Fabrice Gygi and his use of 'power' in his works. Another source of inspiration was psychology for us: pressure disease. We called our work 'structured' because we wanted to make different kinds of structures (with always 3 movements) with daily things that are very strictly positioned. © December 2012 Yara Jumelet and Lisemarie Van Loon

In 2000 ontwierp Fabrice Gygi zijn Parcours Vita, gebaseerd op een versie van de bekende ‘fito-meters’ die ooit vele van onze bossen en parken sierden. Het is een installatie die uit 12 grote en 12 kleine, bedrukte metalen borden bestaat die de toeschouwer langs een tegendraads sportief parcours doorheen het museum leiden. Deze borden hangen tussen de andere kunstwerken in, en sporen de museumbezoeker aan tot een meer fysiek bevredigende ervaring van de kunst intra muros. Uiteraard alludeert Gygi met de titel van zijn werk (“parcours van het leven”) schertsend op de subtiele manier waarop onze lichamen in de ontspanningsindustrie (cultuur, kunst, sport) aan een bijna militaire vorm van disciplinering worden onderworpen.
