Bike / bicycle 1. Meaning of bike A bike is an essential item for survival in China, especially in Beijing where you can encounter traffic jams during rush hour, rain, snow, or any other times. And to get to the subway usually requires at least 20 minutes of walking (or sometimes more). 2. How to buy a bike in Beijing To buy a bike you need to have a special skill of picking one that is functional enough to not kill you but doesn't look too nice so you will lose it very quickly. When I just bought my bike, I had strangers ask me that it looked too new so I will get it stolen easily. But when I tried to buy a second hand, they looked too old and whilst I might not lose money by getting it stolen, I might lose my LIFE. So I had to carefully balance between these two lifespans - the lifespan of my bike under my ownership, and my own life. 3. How to ride it in Beijing But even if you pick a functional bike, you may still fear for your life because on the road you have various drivers - cabs, cars, trucks, 3 wheel drivers, as well as various 2-wheel vehicles (motorcycles, electric bikes, electric scooters) who often decide to cycle TOWARDS you in the opposite direction. Not to mention that in china, cars can turn right even though the pedestrian crossing is green. So I would always be fearing that a car may accidentally drive INTO me. My prayer life has definitely improved on the road.... 4. Potential problems But anyway, my bike itself had also caused me to pay a lot of attention. During my last 2.5 months in Beijing my NEW-ly bought bike always required attention because 1) on the second day of purchase, the lock was fiddled with so I had to carry the bike to a shop to get the chain cut (I probably looked quite suspicious); 2) my back light broke off as my friend was testing it for 2 minutes so I had to get it replaced; 3) my back wheel was bent when it was carrying an extra person so I had to get it replaced and; 4) today finally my PEDAL fell off while I was riding it!! (But I was safe). Thankfully I found a roadside handyman and he fixed it for me for ¥5. Desire all this I am still very happy I can explore new places in Beijing with the bike :)
