Intro to Black Feminism & Music

Black feminism incorporates all forms of pop culture. Being that music is art, healing, and entertainment, music is vital to life. Being that black feminism is a school of thought in which sexism, class oppression, gender identity and racism are bound together through intersectionality, music has the ability to link these ideas together in a creative manner.

How important is the fashion side of your music? I think that visual art in all aspects is super important to me, whether it be throughout the creation of my videos or my album artwork. Creating strong visual representation of not only myself but, again, black women, and getting to see us as avant-garde beings in a world that sometimes puts us in a box is really important to me.

Feeling all the feels. 😭 When I look at this picture I think back to my first field trip in elementary school to a museum. I had only seen paintings in encyclopedias up to that point in my life. There was a show up of work by painter @thebobartlett whose work still inspires me to this day. There was a painting of a black man standing in front of a house. I don’t remember a lot about my childhood, but I do have a few emotional memories etched into my mind forever and seeing that painting of a man that looked like he could be my father stopped me dead in my tracks. This was my first time seeing real paintings that weren’t in a book and also weren’t painted in another century. I didn’t realize that none of them had me in them until I saw that painting of Bo’s. I knew I wanted to be an artist already, but seeing that painting made me realize that I could. What dreams may come? #representationmatters

I’ve actually seen this piece and I am currently participating in it in real time! Adrian Piper creates work that addresses ostracism, otherness, racial passing, and racism. Her work pushes for the viewer to engage in a lifelong performance of personal responsibility, which engages in how black feminism aims to include all and simultaneously hold everyone accountable for their privileges. Her work builds societies within societies to hold people accountable for their actions, which is just a super cool concept.
