What Would You Do Differently?

There’s definitely a few things I would do differently if I had the chance, namely the red triangular building. Instead of it being one model, it would have been much better if I had made it multiple segments in which I could use to build not just how it was originally designed but even completely different designs as well. This is for 2 reasons; 

1), It would have been much better and more efficient from a modular standpoint.

2), The model I created had geometry issues which hindered my ability to texture it very well.

Those 2 reasons easily make that building model my biggest regret, however, I’m not disappointed with the outcome. I feel that even though it could be more modular and better designed, it still fits in with the theme of the other buildings and is able to be combined with them, as demonstrated in a few of my photos.

Other regrets I have would be time management, which is something I still nee d to work on, and my overall texture quality isn’t as good as it could be. I have a bit of trouble with unwrapping models correctly and I have even more trouble with texturing them. These are both things I will have to work on.

These are all my assets I created individually in Blender. Obviously, I exported each model segment individually but this is what the blender scene looked like, and this is what I used to test modularity before putting the models into my Unreal scene.

This is what my Unreal scene looks like. As you can see, each building looks quite different from the other, yet there are only 4 different building templates. I made it so each building can essentially merge together and get placed on different parts, and even be flipped around to alter it’s shape. From there, using windows, doors, vents, etc. you decorate any building the way you want it, making each building different from each other and having close to limitless options.

To further make these buildings different from each other my next step was to create 2 or 3 more textures interchangeable for each building, which would have further gave the impression of multiple different buildings. Right now, I only have 3 different textures that cane be used on each building; Red, Gray, and Black.

These are my other 3 buildings. The tall Dark blue one with the stripes isn’t as modular as the others as it can only be stacked on top of itself, but it is still able to look vastly different form other clones because you can add window, shades, gates, etc. and it can be connected to on the side via the vent pipe on the other buildings.

I also have 1 building with indents on the top which can stack on top of itself seamlessly to give more indents or have the other building placed on top, it can also be rotated on its side or upside down to make it look like a new building as well.

The last building is an ordinary building which can stack on itself or have pretty much any building stacked on top seamlessly and be decorated to look unique.

This is my Red building, I tried making the front slope completely bare so you could decorate it how you want. 

As you can see, it doesn’t have to be a building for people to live in like the one with steps on top with windows, it could be a holding dock for hazardous gas tanks, it could even be both! 

It could be a radio station with big satellites occupying the roof, or it could have tall buildings on top of its’ roof. 

I tried making the possibilities for it endless, and the best part is you can remove the doors and just stack it onto one of the other 2 compatible buildings.

My plan hasn’t changed as I’m currently on track and haven’t run into any hiccups. These are the remaining items I still have to complete.

Reflection

I was able to model all 3 buildings I planned to model as well as modular pieces that I can use to fit on the buildings for variation.

I tested all of the models in the unreal scene and built them together. Everything ran well and I had no issues.

It did end up taking me a fair bit longer to complete each model than estimated - I am only down on one asset which is the train bridge thing which shouldn’t be enough for me to re-plan. 

Next week I plan to unwrap and texture all my assets and complete the train bridge asset.

Modular creation.

As you can see, there are a few variants for each object that can be reused for other buildings. The double decker building can also be used as a standalone building, or even stack multiple buildings, I can also use different bars (small, medium and large for height) holding the buildings up.

In these photos you can see my third and final building model. This model uses a few new parts but most of them can be put on the other 2 buildings to give variation. These include; the barrels on top, (of which there are 3 variants that can also stack) The connectors on the side and both building models. The railing on the top are the same models of railing used for all 3 buildings.
