BHAM ON THE BIG SCREEN 01
(A recurring look at the times Tinseltown & beyond cast their gaze toward the Magic City).
The West Wing “College Kids” Original Air Date: October 2, 2002
In The West Wing’s third episode of its fourth season, White House Chief of Staff Leo McGarry shows an OPAL (Operation Alert) Drill to his lawyer in an attempt to impress her. It sort of works. The West Wing, like all of Aaron Sorkin’s works, is lousy with odd sexy intellectuals.
The simulation is a first strike attack coming from China and North Korea. Predictably, Los Angeles and New York are hit first. Third? Birmingham, Alabama! Of course, these attacks are likely occurring in a relatively condensed amount of time, and the difference between third city attacked and tenth city attacked would be irrelevant.
But there she is! The Iron City! Just to be thought of in such a simulated troubling time!
(To be earnest, there was a rumor floating around Huntsville in the late 90s/early 00s that the Rocket City was number 3 on Al-Qeada’s “hit list” due to the presence of the Redstone Arsenal, a military post known for hosting some missile command and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. It made us youths feel important and terrified, which is not the worst of sensations.)
This episode also contains a scene where Canada’s Barenaked Ladies play an American Rock the Vote concert in Washington, D.C. at the peak of four years after their “One Week” popularity, once again proving the only stone-cold truth about Aaron Sorkin: he is terrible at scoring television.
Do you have a favorite “Bham on the Big Screen” moment? Maybe one that doesn’t involve a simulated nuclear attack? Let us know on twitter and we’ll take a deep look at it together. @bhamcomedynews

Comedy is a lot like punk rock. At least it is to Chris Ivey, founder of Birmingham comedy group Goulash Comedy.
One of two articles floating around on the web this week relating to Birmingham comedy.
