Bhangra.me: Vancouver's Bhangra Story May 5 - October 23, 2011 Museum of Vancouver The Museum of Vancouver and the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society (VIBC) present an exciting, never-seen-before exhibit on Vancouver Bhangra, opening May 5, 2011. Experience an interactive exhibit that chronicles Bhangra music, dance and politics in Vancouver. From dance teams in the 70s, to international DJs in 2011, this exhibit features Vancouver’s unique Bhangra story.

The beauty of Bhangra.me is that we find so many hidden treasures. The first picture is of Vancouver Bhangra pioneer Balbir Bains who was a member of the Punjab Cultural Association. PCA travelled all over Canada and Washington during the 1970's and 1980's before transforming into the present day PAAR Club. 

The second picture is one I've always heard about but now I've finally seen it! This popular skit was one of the final performances by the original members of PCA and their "retirement" dance featured them sporting fake beards.  But as you know, the love for Bhangra never dies!

The special effects are intense but what do you think of the song? With a mash up of folk history and "300", the video for " Hukam" off of Jazzy B's latest album Maharaja's released today. Featuring the living legend Kuldeep Manak and his son Yudhvir, the album is available on ITunes in the UK and the rest of the world by early next week.

Don't let the font confuse you, it's not Harry Potter... it's Jazzy B! Vancouver's own Crown Prince of Bhangra is now a Maharaja and his latest album drops this month featuring Jazzy's own idol Kuldeep Manak and his son Yudhveer Manak.  What do you think of the teaser?

Without a doubt one of the most distinctive features of Vancouver's Bhangra scene is the early history of female Bhangra dancers. Going all the way back to the mid-1970's with the Khalsa Dancers, to PAAR Club, to the first all women's Bhangra teams of Simon Fraser University and the UBC Girlz, this rich tradition is integral to the Bhangra.me Exhibit. Starting out as a dancer with the Surrey India Arts Club, Sarbjeet Cheema has reached the highest heights of Bhangra music. Balancing strong lyrics with a distinctive voice, he highlights the diversity of Vancouver's Bhangra Sound. Here's a rare original video of his Rangla Punjab from 1996.
