The King Who Defeated the Dutch
Maharaja Marthanda Varma was more than a warrior.
He strengthened royal authority, transformed Venad into the powerful Kingdom of Travancore and defeated the Dutch East India Company at the Battle of Colachel in 1741.
His most remarkable decision came later.
Instead of executing the captured Dutch commander Eustachius De Lannoy, Marthanda Varma used his military knowledge to strengthen the Travancore army.
In 1750, the king dedicated Travancore to Lord Padmanabha and declared himself Padmanabha Dasa, the servant of the deity.
