Despite the fact that we are shown that Pokemon are fully intelligent creatures capable of understanding speech, conversing in their own ways, and in some case speaking themselves, they still participate in battles willingly and, in the overwhelming majority of cases, without any protest. One could argue that this is a part of a basic instinct in pokemon to fight, but I believe there is more to this. Given how often humans themselves are hurt by Pokemon moves and then recover shortly after I believe it can be said that in the world of Pokemon being injured holds only a fraction of the weight as it does in our world, especially given the repeated exploded and launched Team Rocket.
