Holiday Cheer | Open
“So it turns out Cheese doesn’t like christmas outfits,” Binks smiled slowly, explaining the scratches that decorated her arms from the kitten’s protests. “She liked Halloween but I think the jingling hat may have scared her.”
Everything had become so dull lately. Everyone had fallen into their routines. Melody craved excitement. She had a plan. Remembering a famous episode of a tv show. She put several baking utensils inside jello and hid them in several places throughout the bakery. And pretended to act naturally as she watched Bianca find piece after piece.
Bianca didn’t often help with the baking as she was more the salesperson than anything else, but with Fauna feeling under the weather Mel and Kronk had been using her as an extra pair of hands. She loved helping them just as much as she loved learning from the experts that she wasn’t bothered at all. That was until one morning she couldn’t find the big whisk. She found the smaller ones where they usually were but the big one seemed to have walked off. She searched through the obvious places first then moved onto the less obvious. Opening cabinet after cabinet, she got more and more confused until finally she opened a usually empty drawer on a whim. Already laughing, she reached into the drawer to pull out a perfectly formed jello mold with a spatula in the middle - not the utensil she was looking for but she had a pretty good guess as to what state she’d find it in.
“Ok,” she said through a giggle, “am I hot or cold in regards to finding the whisk?”
Cake! And Cat? | Bonk
He turned the oven light on and spied on the cake that was being baked within. Bianca had been in such turmoil since Mel’s sudden disappearance that he just knew he had to do something to make her feel better. His first instinct was to make something yummy so why not bake the cure to literally everything. He decided to go with a marble cake just to keep it different from the usual and hoped that she would still enjoy it. Before the timer could go off he was already placing his oven mitts on and taking out the baked good with a smile. It was perfect and it always made him feel good when it came out to the best possible quality. Kronk put the pan down somewhere safe and put another timer on to let the cake cool. To make the time go by he went ahead and started to make a homemade frosting he had learned from Fauna. Once everything was complete he made his way to the red head’s room in hopes to bring up her mood.
Kronk knocked on the door and then waited patiently for her to say it was okay for him to come in. He first popped his head in through the door and grinned before holding up the plate of the cake for her. Yet, it was only when he reached her bed that he noticed it wasn’t just Cap who laid beside her. It was also a small creature with orange fur that he was sure had not been living with them until now. The boy stopped halfway and looked over at his friend with his eyebrow arched as he chuckled, “I don’t want to alert you, Binks but your hair may have come to life.”
Bianca knew that she wasn't herself for the last couple of days. It was pointed out to her by a fair few people, both people she knew and strangers that frequented the bakery. She'd still greet people with her usual smile, happy to aid them in purchasing whatever confectionery treat they wanted to indulge in. But there was a spark missing. She knew it. Fauna knew it. Her parents were across the country from her and they knew it. Her worry had clouded her mind so much so that she knew she needed to do something to pull herself free and since she wasn't able to manifest Mel in front of her, she did the next best thing. And adopted a small orange kitten, one that she'd been thinking about for some time but now seemed like the perfect time to acquire.
Laying on her bed, on her side, her hair splayed over the pillow, she watched Cap very carefully sniffing the new friend. Cheese, as she'd named her, was simply adventuring across the bed paying no mind to the Corgi. The kitten jolted when the knock came, darting up the bed closer to Binks' face to stare in the direction of the offending noise. Bianca giggled, beckoning her roommate to enter. She sat up slowly, scooping the kitten up as she did so and smiled at Kronk, "she does look like that, doesn't she?" Holding her up towards his face, she introduced though half of her focus was on the cake in his hand, "this is Cheese. She's new."
He felt a bit overwhelmed by her questions, not that she was to blame just that he wanted answers for them but he didn’t have them “I- I don’t know.” She sighed, checking his phone again. “I know as much as you do. She didn’t sleep at home. I was going to spend the day with her, to celebrate her last day of community service, but she never arrived.” Dash recalled all those pastries and sweets he had spent the entire morning baking. Dash looked around trying to find answers but he only found more questions. He rubbed his beard “I wish I could tell you more, Bianca. I really do. But I just know nothing”
Bianca sighed, her worry seemingly weighing down her usually bright light, "sorry I'm just dumping so many questions on you, I'm just worried. Barrel didn't really tell me much though if it's something between them, I can get that he wouldn't want to. I'm just confused." She bit her lip and looked at Dash for a long moment before gently resting her hand on his arm, "I bet you're feeling just as confused and worried. I shouldn't be adding to your obvious stress about all of this. Just don't hesitate to call me with anything you might need, even if it's just company. She'll turn up." She hoped she was right.
Barrel shrugged. He didn’t want to have to say those words, to say that she was gone for good, even though he knew it was true in terms of Mel seeing him again. Bianca would be fine. Mel wouldn’t be gone for good from her friends. “Just wait for her or something.” He looked down, not knowing what the right thing to say was. “It’s not a big deal. Just go sit down and wait and do whatever you fucking do in your spare time and wait until Mel comes and says hi.” He felt awkward, not wanting to get angry but finding that he couldn’t help it. Anyone around him was the easy target. “I’m fine.” He grumbled, obvious that it wasn’t true.
Bianca was only becoming more and more confused with what Barrel was telling her. Was Mel gone or was Mel simply off somewhere? He claimed that all she had to do was wait but something about his demeanor was making her wonder if that was true at all. Something terrible had to have happened at least, something wasn't right at all. "You don't seem 'fine,'" she squinted at him, once more trying to read his mind though obviously failing, "why is it that you can't seem to give me a straight answer? Something is obviously going on. Is Mel okay? Are you? Was there more than just Flora's store?"
He rubbed his forehead, in just one day he could feel himself age about 30 years. He couldn’t understand what lead her to do this, he replayed the events of last week, and previous to that in his head all day long and couldn’t find an answer. He sighed deeply and looked at the redhead “I dont know. I’m going to try something but I still don’t know if it’s going to work. I’ll message you when I figure out something.” He had plans to have Tip go through her computer and maybe find something, but that wasn’t his main idea, he needed someone else but he was still unsure if that someone wanted to go along Dash’s idea. “Right now, just stay around, if she ever comes back. I don’t know. Maybe talk to her other friends ? You know them better than I do, and give them my number if they need anything.” He knew that it was in vain to tell her that he didn’t need help, but if he was really planning to go after her, he had to have some people behind in case she came back.
"If she ever comes back? Dash?" it was hard to hide the alarmed tone in her voice. He couldn't just word something like that and not have her worry even more than she previously was, "do you mean she won't come back? Is she a danger to herself or in danger in another way?" Binks shook her head, trying to calm herself down and only managing to feel more sick to her stomach with worry than she already way. She needed to keep everything in perspective. She knew Mel and if there was one thing she knew better than anything else, it was that she wasn't selfish. She wouldn't leave her loved ones wondering forever. There was probably a more likely answer than the one her brain jumped to first. "Okay, I'll do what I can here but Dash, you'll keep me updated? I- you'll let her know that I love her and want her to be safe, right?"
Barrel wanted to shout ‘Who gives a fuck about the work schedule? I’m sure everything is so fucked now that someone can’t make it into work! The horror!’ But there was no need to say that to her. Mel would still talk to her friends, therefore if she had to, she’d come back to work. It wasn’t a big deal to them. “Why would I lie? I don’t know anything, she just said she’s gone.” He sighed. “If you just wait, she’ll contact you. It’s not a big fucking deal.” He rubbed his eyes, he was still tired. “Is that all?”
"Like gone for good gone?" Binks stared at Barrel, hoping that by sheer willpower she'd be able to read his mind because he wasn't being overly helpful with his words. She understood that whatever was going on was bothering him, so his demeanor wasn't a surprise but she did wish that he'd feel at least comfortable enough by now to treat her with the tiniest bit of explanation - they had known each other for a while. "It is a big deal, Barrel. If it wasn't than she would have said something but she didn't," she offered before tilting her head to see if she could catch his gaze, "are you alright?"
Barrel wasn’t in the mood for talking to anyone, but he decided the least he could do was just quickly reply before leaving. Yet at first, a wave of confusion washed over him. He assumed that everyone else was told that Mel had left. Or perhaps everyone was making fun of it since Mel was no doubt still talking to them. But Bianca didn’t seem the type to joke about something like that. He paused and frowned. “She’s not sleeping. She fucked off. Left. Gone god knows where. She’ll message you soon or something, I don’t fucking know.”
"Wait, what?" her voice was laced with surprise, not expecting to hear that Mel had gone anywhere. "But, she was supposed to be on the schedule for work this week.." Bianca trailed off, in the back of her mind she knew what Barrel had meant by her having gone but she didn't know how to admit it to herself. She shook her head before asking, even though she knew how dumb it sounded before it hit the air, "are you sure? I mean, did you know it was something she wanted to do? Maybe she's just taking an impromptu vacation?"
Dash hadn’t come to terms that Melody was nowhere to be found. He tried everywhere, the checked the police, hospitals, hotels. He frantically sent her texts, called her, left her voicemails, messaged her in every social media he could get a hold of. He spent all afternoon looking for her in the streets, he walked the beach back and forth four times, he stopped brunette girls on the street in hopes that it’d be her. Her car wasn’t in the on the street where she last parked. He was out of sorts. He was about to head to his house and talk to Tip, who was still unaware of it all. He heard a familiar voice which made him lift his head from his phone as he was searching for a phone number of someone in her family. His eyes met with the redhead, he forced himself to smile but it quickly faded away at her question “Mel disappeared.”
Binks felt her stomach sink, a cold rush of worry settling itself on her shoulders. She'd already heard as much from Barrel and though she believed him, she wanted that tiny part of her mind that thought it might've been a cruel prank to be true. Her brows knitted together as she tried to comprehend it all, lately there were a lot of questions swirling in her head about how Mel was and if there was anything she could have done to help. If there was anything she'd missed in regards to the brunette asking for help. Bianca felt hopeless, "surely she can't have just disappeared, she must've..she must be.." She bit her lower lip, the distress on her face unable to be concealed, "what can I do?"
Barrel had been wandering around outside for a few hours by now, giving up on the prospect of skateboarding to take his mind off things, and instead opting to say ‘fuck it’ to the day and shut himself inside instead. He picked up his board in one hand, letting it drag against the floor and not caring if he’d now have a skateboard with the ends scratched up. When he was walking, he heard a voice glancing up from the floor to see Bianca walking over. “Fuck sake,” he muttered under his breath, waiting until she had walked up to him. He looked down after her comment. “Come on, seriously?”
Bianca tipped her head to the side, her brows furrowing in confusion. It wasn't abundantly clear to her what she'd said that had made him take such a stance, maybe he was lost in thought and she'd interrupted him. "Sorry to interrupt your--" she looked at the skateboard and just dropped the topic, not really knowing what he was up to in the first place, "I'm sorry to bother you, it's just I hadn't really heard from Mel since she started with the community service and I just figured she was so busy she couldn't get back to me or anything but now I just, I'm not even sure. I haven't heard from her, do you think it's possible she's still sleeping?"
Binks knocked on the apartment door for the third time, realizing in that moment two important things. One, that was probably really annoying to someone who might’ve been home but two, they were probably not home. Sighing quietly, she turned away from the door and headed towards the front of the building - hoping that maybe she’d run into Mel or at least one of the boys. The lack of answer wasn’t doing anything for the pit in her stomach but she tried to stay optimistic. She was the queen of the bright side. Nothing was wrong, they were out for a nice large celebratory meal of some sort. Nothing at all to worry about. As she was formulating the ideal scenario in her head, she saw a familiar face. Plastering a smile to her face, she bounded towards them, “Hey! I was wondering, have you seen Mel around?”

9:14 am [ Text to: Cupcake Overlord ] Today I've decided I'm going to see if I can do a back handspring. I haven't done one since I was little. 9:15 am [ Text to: Cupcake Overlord ] ....And there was a trampoline, but hey, I'm bouncy enough that I don't need one.
Bianca knew that Mel was really busy with her community service but that never stopped her from leaving little messages on the regular - just little things to brighten her day. The redhead was used to talking to the brunette at work or via text on a daily basis and since she couldn't actively go and cheerlead outside Flora's store for her friend, she did what she could. The lack of response she attributed to Mel being tired or busy after long days. And she'd be lying if she didn't consider that her friend was going through something as well and simply didn't want to talk. Getting arrested in itself was enough to make her worry that something bigger had been going on, it wouldn't be much of a leap for that to be true. Binks would hope that Mel would come to her if she needed it and she'd be there with open arms. She definitely hoped Mel knew that.
11:33am [ Text to: Cupcake Overlord ] So 11:33am [ Text to: Cupcake Overlord ] I fell on my face a few times and have a gnarly bruise on my arm and kind of hurt all over 11:34am [ Text to: Cupcake Overlord ] but I did it. Kind of. Mostly. I landed on my knees but you know, I'm gonna count it as a win.
Work was noticeably quieter without Mel bopping around the kitchen with Kronk. On a normal day, there was a constant string of conversation with easy silences as they all worked seamlessly around one another. Without Mel there, Binks did try to continue the light atmosphere because she knew herself, if she let her mind have a chance to wander she'd start worrying. Being the first face people see when they enter the bakery meant she had to be ready to smile at all times, a worried salesperson never sold goodies well. Even with her best efforts, there was still a noticeable absence in the air. Mel wasn't there. It felt off.
5:27pm [ Text to: Cupcake Overlord ] You know, a girl gets used to seeing someone every day and it's weird when you take that away from them 5:27pm [ Text to: Cupcake Overlord ] I miss you, dude. You're done with your community service today, right?
Binks situated herself on her bed, her phone at the ready just in case Mel finally sent a string of messages ranting about her week at Flora's with hyperbolic descriptions. Bianca was fairly certain that if anyone actually could turn into a dragon - it wouldn't be the blonde. That would be massively unfair that something that cool was given to someone so mean. It took a lot of self-control not to simply run right over to Mel's place and jump on her, telling her how much she missed her and asking her to please explain herself. Obviously that would be overbearing and stressful and Binks never wanted Mel to think that she couldn't come to her for support. She feared that Mel already thought that with how she'd reacted initially to the arrest. It wasn't that she was mad at her friend, she was worried and wore it wrong in the moment. She just wanted to understand.
She didn't realize she'd fallen asleep until she awoke with a start when Cap squeaked a particularly loud toy. Sunlight was pouring in through the window and she panicked, grabbing for her phone blindly and praying she hadn't missed messages from Mel. Her stomach sank, there were no missed notifications from the brunette.
10:05am [ Text to: Cupcake Overlord ] Mel?
Mel shrugged “Any person Fauna would choose would be a great choice.” Melody tilted her head slightly to the side pondering their participation on the competition, it would be a fun experience but the cameras and every little thing they were doing frightened Mel a bit. “To be honest I think I’d have a meltdown. I can’t deal with competition. I take hours to bake because I like to take things slow.” She plopped on the couch, crossing her legs under her and letting her head rest on the edge of the sofa. “Although your mixing abilities are truly fabulous, that’s not magic! That’s the work of those little timers shaped like an egg. “ Mel explained gesturing at the 2 egg timers on the counter. “Egg one is for batch one and egg 2 is for the batch you just put in. Easy as pie.” Mel let her jaw drop in shock “What the fucking fuck. Either that tasted like heaven or I have no faith in these type of competitions anymore.” She crossed her arms over her chest. Melody looked at Bianca at the corner of her eye “If she doesn’t I will personally present it to her on a silver platter.”
Binks glanced over into the kitchen at the egg timers Mel referred to, "I still don't know why you don't have cute animal shaped ones. Or if you do, why you don't bring them here. Maybe afraid Jelly will hide them from you?" As if on queue, Kronk's ferret darted across the room with one of Cap's stuffed toys to squirrel away in some random corner. She ran her hands over her face before continuing to stare in disbelief at the screen. "They told us where she worked at the beginning of the episode, right? If she wins, I think we'll have to take a road trip to see just why this woman won because from what I'm watching, I can't believe she's gotten this far." Grinning over at Mel, she added, "or we can just do it so you can deliver her a butt shaped cake simply because I want to see you present that to her with a straight face." A fit of giggles overtook her as her hands once again covered her face, her voice coming out muffled, “oh my gosh, by being friends with you I’ve turned into such a menace. I’m suggesting butt shaped cakes and the only thing that went through my head was ‘who’s butt would be best.’“
