In which Severus applied to be Fleamont Potter's assistant.
Based on Chapter 58 of My Jeverus/ Snames Prompts Challenge
James Potter strolled into the sunlit kitchen of Potter Manor, ruffling his already untidy black hair as he went. It was a late summer morning, and the scent of fresh pancakes and syrup filled the air. His mother, Euphemia, stood by the stove humming, while his father, Fleamont Potter, sat at the table reading the Daily Prophet through his horn-rimmed spectacles.
āMorning, Mum. Morning, Dad,ā James said, planting a quick kiss on his motherās cheek before sliding into a chair across from his father. He helped himself to a stack of pancakes. Life after Hogwarts had been pleasantly uneventful so far. In this peaceful post-war world, there was no war to fight ā indeed, no Dark Lord to threaten them ā so James had been enjoying a quiet life assisting his parents and occasionally meeting friends for a pickup Quidditch match. He suspected his parents rather enjoyed having him home for a while.
Fleamont peered over the top of the newspaper. āMorning, James. I trust you slept well?ā
āLike a log,ā James replied around a mouthful of pancake. He poured himself some pumpkin juice and glanced curiously at his father. Fleamont looked particularly chipper, his thick moustache twitching upward in a smile. āYou look pleased with yourself, Dad. Something interesting in the Prophet?ā
His father folded the newspaper neatly and set it aside. āAs a matter of fact, Iām pleased because I believe Iāve solved our little problem.ā
James raised an eyebrow. āProblem? Did I miss something?ā
Euphemia set a plate of crispy bacon on the table, chuckling softly. āYour father means his search for an assistant, dear.ā
āAh.ā James nodded slowly. Fleamont, a renowned potioneer and the inventor of Sleekeazyās Hair Potion, had been talking about finding a new potions assistant for weeks. Even though he had sold his company years ago, retirement simply didnāt agree with him. These days he kept a private laboratory on the estate where he tinkered with new formulas for fun and consulted for the Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers from time to time. His previous lab assistant had moved abroad, leaving Fleamont to muddle through solo. James often helped when he could, but advanced potioneering had never been his strongest suit.
Swallowing another bite of pancake, James asked, āSo you found someone willing to work out here in the countryside with a retired potions maniac?ā He shot his father a teasing grin.
Fleamont chuckled. āOh yes. Not just willing, my boy ā positively eager. And extremely qualified, I might add.ā He took a sip of his tea, eyes twinkling in that way that meant he had a surprise in store. āHeās a recent Hogwarts graduate, class of ā78 like yourself. Top marks in Potions and Arithmancy. In fact, he came very highly recommended by an acquaintance of ours.ā
Jamesās interest was piqued. Not many people their age had both Potions and Arithmancy top marks ā that sounded like the resume of a Ravenclaw or perhaps a studious Hufflepuff. āWho recommended him?ā
His father dabbed his mouth with a napkin, an innocent expression plastered on his face. āLily Evans.ā
James almost choked on his pumpkin juice. āLily recommended this bloke?ā he sputtered once he recovered. Lily Evans was one of Jamesās closest friends (and ex-crush) from Hogwarts. They had dated briefly in seventh year, but realized they were better as friends after graduation. Lily had gone on to apprentice in magical research and clearly had kept in touch with the academic circles. If Lily vouched for someone, they must be brilliant. āWell, thatās promising. Did she say anything else about him?ā
Euphemia set down the frying pan and joined them at the table, her eyes warm behind her spectacles. āOnly that heās exceptionally talented and could use a fresh start.ā James noticed a slight hesitation in his motherās voice on the last bit, but before he could ask, Fleamont clapped his hands and stood up.
āIn any case, heāll be here within the hour for his first day. Iām having him start immediately ā no sense wasting time!ā Fleamontās enthusiasm was unmistakable. He drained his tea and headed off. āIāll be in the lab preparing a workstation for him. James, perhaps you could greet him at the door when he arrives? I donāt want him getting lost on the grounds.ā
James agreed, though he found himself wondering who this mystery genius was. A recent classmate of his, recommended by Lily, wanting a fresh startā¦ He mentally cycled through the possibilities from his year at Hogwarts. Could it be some Ravenclaw like Gwendolyn Perks? No, Lily said āhe.ā Maybe a Hufflepuff like Eddie Carmichael? Or a fellow Gryffindor? He doubted it; none of his Gryffindor mates had been that keen on Potions.
He finished breakfast, grabbed an apple for good measure, and wandered into the entrance hall to await the new hire. The manorās entrance hall was grand but cozy, with a polished oak floor and portraits of deceased Potter relatives snoozing in their frames. James leaned against the banister of the grand staircase, tossing the apple in the air absentmindedly.
A soft pop echoed just outside the front door ā the sound of someone Apparating onto their front step. āThat must be him,ā James muttered. He straightened up, smoothing his wrinkled T-shirt out of habit. It felt a bit odd to be playing greeter.
He opened the door, ready to welcome the newcomer ā and froze, the friendly smile on his face faltering.
On the doorstep stood a tall, slender young man clad in austere black robes. His shoulder-length dark hair was tucked behind his ears, and he held a small suitcase in one hand. James recognized that pale, drawn face and those deep-set, wary black eyes immediately. He knew them as well as his own.
āSnape?ā James blurted, apple dropping from his hand and thudding to the floor.

I have this whole idea with Severus showing up out of nowhere and presenting the king with a deal, he will make him a wolfsbane potion in exchange for becoming his āmost trustedā advisor.
Suspicious from the beginning, but Lupin cannot say no to such a proposal. Out of worry for his kingdom and because Severus is a very powerful wizard.
He is very much suspected to want to take over the throne from the beginning, but there is no way to prove it. He doesnāt poison the potion, he doesnāt try to kill the king in his sleep, he is very good at his politics.
If only Remus didnāt notice how little by little, Severus kept slipping him ideas that could surely break him as a ruler or open the doors to unwanted guests.
Therefore he keeps a close eye on Severus. But that close eye also leads him to become really close to him, the more they talk the more he thinks he understands Snape, and in turn, Severus understands him.
They become really close, completely forgetting their responsibilities around each other, and having a deep respect and understanding toward one another.
THEN SUDDENLY
There is an attempted murder against the king. The only thing that saves Remus is that he is able to wake up in time to avoid the blow of the knife, but he is unable to spot who the perpetrator was.
Immediately all fingers go to Severus, and although Remus doesnāt believe that he did it, he would rather not risk a second tey at his life.
And so the trial begins, except, Severus fights for his life as never before. Offended, even, that he would be considered a traitor.
āI admit that I have come to this castle for selfish reasons. But I would never betray this kingdom.ā
Remus tells Severus though, that he knows he came to Remus to kill him (he was working for Voldemort and was tasked with it) but something changed his mind.
It almost seems like Severus would be saved, and then suddenly, he does something unforgivable.
He messes with Lupinās drink and makes him almost kill someone in his wolf form, then confessed to be the one who tried to kill him the first time. This is a betrayal worse than any other Lupin faced, and in a fit of rage, sentences him to death immediately.
It is only on the day of Severusās sentence that it suddenly comes out, that Peter was the one who tried to kill him! He was working for Voldemort all along! And that the reason why Snape spiked Remusās wolfsbane was because he was threatened to be killed my Voldemort anyway! And this was the only way to keep Remus safe.
Remus rushes to Severusās chamber, but the advisor is unresponsive. He just stands there, watching the outside of his cell.
And Remus starts pleading, telling that he will give Severus anything, everythibg just for him to come back to him.
And then Severus smiles, and he calmly starts petting his hair, like he has done so many times before.
