“ i can’t .. this is .. it has to be a nightmare ... it can’t be real . ”
the former queen grasps for the door frame , feeling the bile rise in her stomach as she tries to understand the whole ordeal . uma had seemed so kind . and yet she had been lying since they first met . and belle missed it . how could she have messed up so much ?
“ this is the best he could manage ? oh , what a pity ... then again , my son has always been a disappoint to me . ”
the queen muses , distaste dripping from her as she slips through the throngs of people around her . her words tasted foreign to her , almost wrong . yet she couldn’t bring herself to care enough to figure out why .

— “I could go and see the castle but why would i want to go and do that when I know that when we get our revenge it’ll be mine.” Gaston said boastfully. He knew him going was a bad idea. Just thinking of seeing the Beast and Belle there all happy was enough to make his blood boil. “At least here I can drink in peace without the threat of being persecuted.”
“ oh ? and here i was under the impression you weren’t up to anything devious . lying , really , gaston ? ”
a raise of her brow as she did her best to make her face appear upset , fighting the light-headed feeling that had her wanting to smile . curse that champagne , leaving her all out of sorts . she had to be sharp with him or else , it was dangerous .

there was no denying that there was bad blood between them , but she did truly wish him all the best . everyone deserved to be happy , even him . yet .. she had a right to be doubtful , didn’t she ?

she murmured , bowing her head in an attempt to hide her shame . for twenty years , they had allowed fear to rule them . no more . now , it was up to those who lived on the isle to decide whether or not they could forgive the so-called heroes .
“ no more sorry than i am , for not doing more . for counting the sins of your parents against you when we should have been helping . it wasn’t easy for you , and i am so sorry i let it go on as long as it did . anything you need , anything you think would help get you all back on your feet ; it’s yours . just tell me . ”

she murmurs , all smiles as she let her gaze wander , still a bit tense after the month of sleep but refusing to let it get in the way of her hospitality . they were innocent , that was what she had to remember . they were innocent .
“ i am glad to see you’re here . after everything , i thought my son might have been a bit hasty to organize the event , but i think now , he was on the right track . ”

there was no hiding the tears now , no possible way to disguise the anguish that tore at her insides . how could this happen ? how many people were hurt ?

the queen insisted , setting her bag down by her feet and crossing her ankles . now that the perceived threat was taken care of and the kingdom was safe , there was time for the people to enjoy themselves and have fun .
“ i still make sure to take a day for myself to enjoy a giant cup of hot cocoa , a dozen books and some really fuzzy socks that are perfect for floor-skating . ”

“thank you, dear. i would have never survived as king without you.” he meant that because as much as he kept up an image of an imposing, unfeeling beast, he very much felt all the hatred directed at him and his decisions. “hm, perhaps in between all his king training,” he teased. they had started him younger than expected due to his brother refusing the crown but ben had always been beloved by the kingdom, he believed the people would support his son.
“ of course you would have . you are so much stronger than anyone knows . i mean , maybe you would have been a bit more grumpy but ... ”
she joked , wishing she could do something more for him . he hide it well , but she was his wife . he couldn’t hide it from her . and she was just waiting to figure out how to help .
“ oof , don’t tell me that . i still think of him as my baby boy , and he’s off ready to get married ! ”

“ oh, i’m sure we’ll see if that’s true, dear. ” the old king was not shielded from the rumors of his people. it was expected that he would be detested by the villains and their children, but he was disheartened to hear some of his own citizens turning on him. “ ah, yes. a charming child was he. i do miss those times.” he leaned into the touch of his wife, falling into memories of their past and their children. nobody would ever be able take those treasured memories from him.
“ i know it is , love . you’ve got a good heart and they see it just as i do . ”
she couldn’t pretend she didn’t hear his name taken in vein every so often , spoken in such anger and hatred that it made her stomach twist . he had done was he thought was right for his family , for his kingdom .
“ and now he’s a charming king , just as you were . i can’t believe how fast he’s grown up right in front of us . when did it all happen ? ”

It’s been too long but I’m sure everyone has missed this handsome face.” Gaston boasted loudly as he entered the tavern. The man enjoyed living in the woods and getting to hunt to his heart desire but the time for revenge was fast approaching.
“ for once , you’re right gaston . that is what i’m wondering . ”
the woman admitted , setting her drink down to properly give the would-be murderer a look-over before she did anything that she might regret ; no matter how tempting it might be .
“ why are you here , and what exactly are you up to ? ”

recognizing his beloved, a smile came to his lips as he drew closer to her. “a king, even a former one, cannot hide away in his castle forever. i wanted to see our people,” he admitted. adam had never been able to connect with people in the way his wife or even his youngest son could, he lacked their gift of deep empathy. “and i do remember a few fond memories we shared in the snow.”
“ i’m sure they’ll be just as thrilled to see you as i am , darling . even if it is during this ... dreadful weather . ”
there was no delay in her arms wrapping around his neck , pulling him closer to her under the guise of needing the warmth he provided her . with everything happening lately , she hadn’t had time to properly enjoy his company .
“ i know what you mean . they’re some of my favorites . do you remember when the boys were little , and we used to take them sledding ? ben would only go if he was sitting on your lap . ”

“I guess im still bitter from what happened.” She admitted knowing that she shouldn’t be mad at the Queen for that. In Ellie’s eyes it was at fault of the King. But she she wasn’t a big fan of Belle since her mother always complained how it was because of her that she and her dad weren’t together. “I guess just let this slide and probably not letting people about you and I meeting. I’m sure the old king would want you far away from me, along with your sons.” The blonde knows it’s only a matter of time before she figures out who she’s related too.
“ and you have every right to be . what we did to you , to all of you children was wrong . you deserved so much more than what you were given and i am so sorry for my part . ”
she hesitated as she tried to recall the files she’d been going over just yesterday for the face before her so she had some idea of the grievances the young girl had faced .

a gentle laugh , his smile returned brightly . they were sweet , and kind , and how could she ever have let herself think they would be dangers ?
