New York was even odder than Asgard, which was saying something when one of them was an entire magical planet that might as well have been from an anime. But, stepping foot inside New York was like having an epiphany, if the epiphany hated you and thought that you ought to be run over by a mosquito in a car with a cocaine addiction and five children. Which is perhaps why Valkyrie tried to stay away from New York. But it was long past due her time to come back to New York. So it was with great annoyance, that she’d returned to the bright shining city with too many rats.

Valk’s knuckles rapped against the door of the Avengers compound, quickly and almost nervously, excepting for the part where it was more impatient than anything else. “ Hey, Carol, are you there? ”

Lois looked at the woman, her fingers wrapped around the neck of her own beer bottle. Her lips twitched at the woman’s cross words, taking a sip. “Well, I wanted to have a nice chat one of the few strangers in this bar who isn’t some sleazy creep with a wandering eye, but apparently that’s too much to ask for,” she said. There was no accusation in her tone, nor incrimination, just a kind of wistful sigh. “Oh, well.”

Valk looks again at the woman sitting next to her and then at her beer bottle. “That I can relate to.” She laughs, and takes a short swing from her bottle again, almost coughing at the vinegar taste. She can’t get drunk on this stuff, or really anything on Midgard that wasn’t farmed in New Asgard, but it still feels nice to drink it anyways. “Valkyrie.” She says, “What’s your name?”

CRACKING his lips into a megawatt beam, Johnny’s palm rapped against the bar to signal the bartender. While the bartender made his new friend’s drink, Johnny launched his order over the bar, “ What’s up, man? Be a pal and bring over some tequila shots? Thanks. ” His request was punctuated with a wink; Johnny was a freshly turned twenty-two, and drinking before coming of age didn’t dampen the exhilarating feeling of ordering from a bar. Legally!

Explaining himself wasn’t in his realm of normality. Her innocent question reminded him of his displacement, insofar a wave of unease crashed over him. He glanced at the bartender, willing them to pour the tequila faster, before returning to his new friend. “ Hey, free drinks isn’t enough of an explanation? ” Johnny raised his eyebrows in feigned shock. “ But I mean, my company’s pretty great, too, so… it’s a win-win, trust me. ” The bartender slid him a full shot glass, and he touches it, cool against fingertips searing with anticipation, but he gave the woman a once-over curiously. “ But first things first — what’s your name? ”

Valk accepted the new drink with an easy grin, before turning her head back to the boy. He seemed like he could’ve been younger than the drinking age, twenty-five? If she was correct. She honestly didn’t remember. Back on Asgard it hadn’t mattered, and here... well she was somewhere well into her 3000s she was pretty sure, so it wasn’t like anyone cared. Or she cared.

Taking a sip from her drink Valkyrie gave him a once-over, trying to remember if she recognised him from the fight with Thanos, the aftermath, the party after the aftermath, or any of the past 6 years of stress filled management. But nothing came to mind, so she said, “Valkyrie. What about you?” Her tone was light and bright, as if Valkyrie wasn’t a ridiculous name, and actually her name.

HIS BODY swiveled on the barstool to face the woman seated next him. Blinking, he felt that he vaguely recognized her, or rather, that he should have. “ No, but you’re here to drink. ” Fire and alcohol were never a good mix, and the laws of chemistry did not have a clause that excluded Johnny Storm, Human Torch. Nonetheless, he dug through his pockets and held a folded hundred dollar bill between two fingers, fanning it whimsically in the space between them. Parker wasn’t here, and how pathetic would it be if Johnny started drinking alone? “ Care to join me? I can’t promise you ‘no talking’, but I will promise you WON’T regret it. ”

Valkyrie looked at the hundred dollar bill with amusement and contemplation. She could pay for her own goddamned drinks. She was, after all, a King. She also had a salary from working, those things generally helped when paying for drinks. But free drinks, after all, were free drinks. So with a shrug and a grin she said. “Alright,” and raised her drink to the bartender, asking for another of whatever concoction she was drinking. “So explain to me exactly how I won’t regret talking to you.” She said, finishing off the rest of her, still, very weird tasting alcohol.

there wouldn’t be a day that went by where loki didn’t miss asgard. not that she’d admit it to anyone, though. still, she could already hear all-father’s voice in her head – ‘asgard is a people, not a place ’. but nonetheless, the destroyed former home held sentimental value to her. she’d grown up there, after all. she was aware of new asgard, but had yet to actually go there. walking into a bar, loki takes a seat without realizing who she’d sat next to, ordering a glass of wine. it was the drink she was partial to, next to whiskey. just depended on how she felt, really. it wasn’t like midgardian alcohol had much of an effect on her anyway. hearing the other speak, loki glanced over at her before she shrugged her shoulders. “and you assume that i am?” she raised a brow, chuckling. “did you stop to consider that perhaps i am here for a drink, like you?” a pause. “nice to see you again as well.”

She doesn’t turn around, she doesn’t stiffen, or react, or do anything besides pick up her drink and take another sip of it, and in all honesty? She’s proud of her self restraint. “Hello Loki.” Valkyrie says, still leaning on her bar stool facing forward at the bottles which’ve created a pretty rainbow on the walls.If she were more prone to fits of drama, or even at this point caring, she may’ve turned around, but instead she just notes Loki’s almost niceness with a short hum, a “It’s... good to see you too,” and another sip from her glass. “How’ve you been doing?”

Pepper raised an eyebrow. The hubris of some people never failed to surprise her, which was saying something, considering the man she worked with. “Then don’t talk,” she commented mildly. Her tone was pleasant and non confrontational, her expression polite, but her words were blunt. It was a combination that worked in the business world more so than a personal one, but she didn’t spend much time in the latter. “I want a drink.” She paused, taking a sip of her wine. “In peace, if possible.”

“ Huh.That’s... refreshing actually. ” Valk laughs, something like amusement whittering across her face as she turns her chair to face the newcomer in all her fancy clothes. “ Last time someone came up to me having a drink I ended up loosing my job. ” She adds on, as if it’s explanation. She can’t help but remember Thor, with his insistent persistence, and how it’d eventually led to her running away from Sakaar with him to defeat Hela. But something about the woman’s face struck her as familiar, before it hit her like a fish. “ Pepper Potts, right? Valkyrie, King of Asgard. ” She puts her drink down and sticks out her hand with an almost crooked grin.

Valkyrie grinned at Jessica’s bright enthusiasm, there was something comforting in the other girl’s smile, like it was genuine. Valk wasn’t a stranger to actually happy smiles, but they didn’t come as easily as she would’ve liked. Swishing around her drink Valk looked at it in it’s glass, the weirdly colored liquid with things that looked like seeds floating around in it. “ I... don’t know. ” She laughed quietly, and took another sip from it. “ I didn’t catch the name when the server said it. ” She added on. “It had a k in it, and some other letters.”

For some odd reason Earth never stopped being so... odd. Sure, she’d been living here for nearly 6 years, but it didn’t make any of the day to day things any more normal, any less weird. And sure, she’d voluntarily left Asgard, but that didn’t mean that she didn’t miss the bigglesnipes, or the warriors. Here things were beautiful and calm in a way that Asgard really hadn’t been for thousands, if not millions, of years, but they were also strange, broken down, and dirty in a way that Asgard, nor Sakaar, hadn’t been.

Valk’s hand easily wrapped around the bottle in her hand, this was another thing about Earth she still didn’t get, their alcohol. It was both better, and worse than what she was used to. She took a sip of the odd drink she couldn’t really remember the name of, and shivered a bit at the vinegar-y downtake of it. Well, alcohol was alcohol.

“What do you want? I’m not here to talk.” She sighed to the newcomer.

A thing to know about people who like to drink, other people who like to drink are very recognisable themselves.
