A few weeks ago THE Neil Shah was in Brussels (the real reason I haven't posted in quite a while). We spent a few days going around Brussels and Ghent tasting all of the beer and chocolate within arm's reach.
After a few days, our jeans became sufficiently tight and it was time to take off to Paris for Nichola's birthday. Now, this was the first time I had been back to Paris since my internship back in 2007.
During that summer, I had one of the greatest experiences in my life. It was my first time in Europe, I made some amazing friends, and I met my future wife. Now that experience is pretty hard to top and Paris became placed on a pedestal in the collection of memories in my head. In fact, Paris kicked the shit out of all the other memories in my head.
So after heading back there, I couldn't help but compile a list of the things I loved the most about Paris...
Top 5 things I love about Paris:
5. Disneyland! - Euro Disney is attached to the city...what more could you ask for? Sure I might giggle every time I hear Buzz Lightyear say,"Vers l'infini et au delà!" but you tell me any other place that you can take your wife to instantly make up for a Newlywed Niggle.
4. The landmarks - There are so many beautiful sites to see in Paris that just take your breath away. The Eiffel Tower, Monmartre, the top of Montparnasse...one of my favorite past times has to be going to each of these places and sitting down with wonderful friends to drink wine...as illustrated below
Krishna's Paris Tip #1...you can't drink on the lawn right in front of the Eiffel Tower...but immediately to the right is perfectly fine!
3. The French Language - Time for the obvious statement of the day! A city where everyone strictly speaks French is a great place to practice French! Now I can't fault Brussels for this, but, since there are so many different languages in this city, it's quite easy to slip into English. In Paris, I didn't have this luxury as much, and the result was a compliment from my French teacher upon my return....huzzah Krishna!
2. Baguettes - They're cheap, you can get them everywhere and damn they're tasty. Brussels does have an equivalent -> waffles -> on the up side, they are tastier...but the dangers with these are that they make me fat. YUMMY!!
1. Well this might be obvious for you in retrospect, but my favorite thing about it is that I met my wife there! ...surprise surprise...<3

So yes, it was amazing going down memory lane and heading to Paris for a few days, but this doesn't complete the whole story!
On the Thalys back home to Brussels, I realized a few things. I actually missed Brussels. After 1.5 years, it's starting to really feel like home and a place where I belong (don't get me wrong...TEXAS will ALWAYS be home, but Brussels and the other places I've lived can battle it out for second place).
Top 5 things I love about Brussels:
5. Walibi Amusement Park - Now, it's definitely no Disneyland, but daaaamn did I have a good time when Shreena took me there for my birthday. Also, it reminded me a lot of good old Astroworld - it had good rides, good friends and was close to home.
4. Public transport - Sure, STIB and I don't always get along...it isn't very exstensive, they go on strike constantly and their timings are incredibly inconsistent. HOWEVER, if you happen to not have a ticket, it's really not a big deal. You just walk right past the conductor and take a seat. The tickets here are on the honor system, so if you happen to not have any cash on you...Brussels has your back. Paris, on the other hand, have guys posted up on a Saturday night to make sure that if you want to get liquored up, you will damn well pay for your Metro ride to get there!
3. Beer - For a while now I've been trying to get back to the gym. Each time before I go, I just remind myself that if I want to start running again, I need to carbo-load. Ahhh beer, provider of carbs!
2. Fashion - Paris is the fasion capital of the world...putting on pants everyday is a chore for me. Therefore, I like the fact that Brussels doesn't care what I wear. As long as look slightly more fashionable than the hobo throwing back a tall boy at 6am in the morning, I'm good.
Krishna fashion at its finest
1. Beer - It gets to take up two slots on this list because it's cheaper than water. During the weekend in Paris there was nothing more devastating than sitting down, opening up a menu and seeing a beer priced at €7.50 (for my American friends out there, that's almost $10 for a beer).
Now I know France is the land of wine, and I do enjoy a glass here and there, but I am a beer/Brussels man through and through. Thanks, Brussels!
