Me to the theme park community: theme park designers really need to look to the past to do better in the future. So much of what is done today is not fulfilling its full potential, disappoints, Disney just isn’t what it used to be.

This article and the press coverage it’s getting infuriates me a lot. It’s just upsetting because I know with 100 certainty they are NEVER going to make one of their leading females queer in a major animated film aimed at multiple markets in the year 2018. Not Disney at the very least. Especially not one of their tent poles from the last decade. Could they? Undoubtedly, would it have a huge impact on culture by doing so and be a positive force challenging ideals globally and helping LGBT folk everywhere through representation? Most definitely. A global film like frozen having an openly queer lead character would be nothing short of revolutionary. But will they do that and possibly lose money or go the safe route keep her single and ambiguous and simply smile and say “we hear you and look there’s no guy”.

I don’t think they deserve positive publicity for this if anything I think it’s messed up they are giving so many qualifiers on what would call for a story to have a queer lead. Statements “she might be queer if the story calls for it” are just so WILDLY disingenuous and harmful because these are not the reasons you are keeping that character from being queer.

People have used those same excuses to not cast the LGBT+ community in television and film for years. It’s something that has kept us off screens and wildly small in representation. I want Jennifer Lee to call a spade a spade and stop baiting people on progressive ideas that they are never going to commit too and patting themselves on the back for saying it out loud. You are not going to have a queer character, Elsa isn’t going to be gay, and you aren’t going to have a Gay Disney princess for another couple decades or so simply because you do not wish to take the risk. And saying that you are thinking about it, or possibly pushing for the idea when you know that to be false is harmful, and honestly so god damn tiring.
