A Trip Through Space for Boys and Girls (1954)
Other than looking good, fancy cubes, ice spheres and even crushed ice keep the drink cold. Smaller cubes have more surface area and therefore add to the dilution of the drink. We don’t want that. We may be having a great conversation with old friends or trying to finish cooking dinner and set...
A few weeks ago, I went to the theater to see Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon with my brother Alex (for some reason we couldn’t convince his girlfriend or my boyfriend to join us). Here are the notes I took while watching, plus some drawings I made after! (Click on images to see ‘em larger)
• I just completely forgot the premise of the movie and said, “Why do the ALIENS look like CARS!?” Oops.
Three things about Marco Arment
(and a couple things about you, me, and a metaphorical horse)
Yes. Long. Again. Deal. Thanks.

Tumblr needs to display video thumbnails
I love Tumblr, but I almost never watch the videos people post. But I click on photos to see the bigger version all the time.
Video posts could really use a still frame to give you a peek at what’s inside.
Anyone else feel this way?
Mike looked up from his glass of water, watched Elle ride the cold winds into the bar, and motioned to the bartender for a refill, a replacement. Confident that she’d meet him, Mike arrived thirty minutes late and sipped water to preserve his lucidity.
Elle appeared an hour late, made small...
About three months ago, at my friend Leon’s reading, I read a story about something I did one summer, and then a few days later I got an email from a man who works at a movie production company. His e-mail said that he was at the reading and he thought there might be a movie to be made out of the...
In the meantime, I’ll be over here skimming over hate mails and finding the hypocrisy in being called a miserable, lonely, friendless, immature, ignorant asshole who needn’t worry about using a stroller someday cause I’m undeserving of someone who loves me enough to impregnate me, by people who find deem me mean and judgmental. The good news is, I’m choosing not to take it personally. coughtryitcough. And instead of defending my integrity, intelligence, general understanding of stroller usage, sarcasm, sense of humor, and capacity for human compassion, I’ll simply state my opinion that if literal explanations were applied to every little questionable thing, then nothing in this world would have room to be funny. Sorry Jerry Seinfeld, airline peanut packages are small because planes have limited storage space.
Wicked looking dog, man!
I love my adopted home of Boston with all my heart, but the winters here profoundly suck. Yes, the first snowfall is gorgeous, but then they get old pretty quickly. And the skies are gray, the driving treacherous and parking impossible, and on its worst midwinter days the city looks like ...
Samuel Beckett Playwright, novelist, and Nobel laureate
meets
André the Giant Gargantuan professional wrestling legend
In 1953, fresh off the success of Waiting for Godot, Beckett bought a plot of land near the hamlet of Molien, in the commune of Ussy-sur-Marne, about forty miles northeast of Paris. There he built a cottage for himself with some help from a group of locals, including a Bulgarian-born farmer named Boris Rousimoff. Over the years, Beckett and Rousimoff became friends and would occasionally get together for card games. Rousimoff had a son, André, known as Dédé, who was something of a physical marvel. By the age of 12, André was over six feet tall and weighed 240 pounds. No school bus could hold him, and his family lacked the means to buy a car big enough to schlep him back and forth to school in Ussy-sur-Marne. Enter Boris’ old card-playing buddy Beckett, who owned a truck and was more than willing to pay his friend back for his help with the cottage by giving a lift to his enormous pituitary case of a son on his drives into town. Years later, when recounting his conversations with Beckett (which he did often), André the Giant revealed that they rarely talked about anything besides cricket.
A short disclaimer: This post is about my experiences as a woman and as a non-physicist while at CERN. I feel that these are two separate issues, but I am having difficulty addressing them separately, since my experiences as a woman are so closely related to my experiences as a non-physicist in...

World Cup College compiled a forecast on the expected performance of 32 national teams participating in World Cup 2010, based on each country’s internet usage and population density. The purpose of this research study is to see whether there is a “positive correlation between high meme transmission and high quality football.”
A country which facilitates the effective spread of memes might be expected to have a successful national football team. Whilst memes have causal properties and are capable of replicating between human hosts, environmental context can hinder or assist this process. If advanced ideas on fitness, technique, tactics and strategy spread more quickly in one country in comparison with another, then this could confer competitive advantage.
While it remains an interesting hypothesis yet to be proven, these statistics may be put to good use in tracking memetic activities during the month-long sport event. At Know Your Meme, we’re putting together a special task force to monitor all the online buzz and related discussions in the coming weeks. If you’re a soccer/football fan or planning on watching teh games, feel free to join in at the KYM research forums.
