Probably the best BB fanart I’ve seen. People don’t seem to remember they’re not actually identical and it’s all makeup in a desperate attempt to replace and be better than the original. This is a perfect portrayal of the desperate man behind the cool façade. 10/10

Fans tend to overlook the little detail that Light is insane.

Light’s God complex is a defense mechanism—he’s been raised to be “the perfect son” in a police family and to have a very black and white worldview.

He literally cannot cope with the idea that he’s become a murderer.

He has to see himself as righteous—it’s the lynchpin of his sanity and who has “the right” to decide who lives and who dies but a God?

THIS. omg. It’s either become (the entity that becomes known as) Kira or accept that he killed two people out of morbid curiosity, and … we see enough of what he thinks of murderers and criminals to guess which one he’s going to go with.

Especially since he sees no reason why SHINSEKAI NO KAMI should be a little ambitious as a life goal. The “I’m the best honors student in Japan so I am definitely qualified to be god *big shiny eyes!!!!!!*” thing is funny, but what’s behind that is the fact that he’s handsome and clever and athletic and he was more athletic before he realized his parents disapproved but admittedly that’s headcanon, and all the feedback he gets from the world says that he’s the best. We see that idea in action when he gives his practice test results to Sachiko. He ranked first nationwide but he seems to take that for granted by now.

What does Ryuk know about evil, anyway? He’s a shinigami, ffs. No, Light is in a far better position to make that call. …is what Light thinks. Unfortunately he is rather badly wrong but what can you do I guess except send a freaky hermit detective after him and hope for the best.

Exactly. He spent a week after realising he killed two people out of curiosity, under serious psychological stress (apparently he lost serious weight in that time and barely slept) because as a perfect son, he refuses to believe in such a thing as unintentional mistakes, as having done something bad because he didn’t know what the outcome would be. He’s Light Yagami: he knows better, he always knows the outcome, and that’s why he never makes mistakes – until now.

He is literally incapable of being able to handle the very idea of making a big mistake. Yes, the mistake in this case is murder, and the intent/thought process behind it doesn’t erase the consequence, but it was still a mistake, and he’s completely unprepared as a young person to deal with that. He spends that whole week rationalizing the incidents because he has to, because he has to figure out a way to be okay with what happened without having to change his own view of himself (which, psychologically-speaking, would be like stabbing yourself in the gut). And, as we see, he does.

In other words, his response to retroactively brand it as part of a larger goal to kill all criminals, and therefore continue killing criminals endlessly in order to make it so, is all about psychological self-preservation. If he was planning to kill criminals and make the world a better place anyway, then his accidental deaths were not a mistake, but a pilot trial. He didn’t make mistakes like all teens do because he’s much, much better than that. Killing criminals isn’t a mistake – he doesn’t make mistakes, and in fact, he’s the only one good enough for the job of judgement on this scale. He’s above them, above all humans in fact. Why, he must be God!

Light Yagami’s leap makes utter sense when you understand what he really is – a scared, gifted boy completely unprepared and incapable of accepting that he’s just as flawed and human as the rest of us.
