Evening flag football game in St. Mary's Park on the edge of Bernal Heights. I love my city and I respect its newcomers even as I cherish the memories of other times. I played soccer on this pitch when I was 11. I had a coach named Sal, from El Salvador. He had an Elvis Presley pompadour and favored guayabera shirts. He promised me $10 a goal and I never played as well as I did that year at the leading edge of adolescence. (He never paid me, which I was a mad about for a minute.
