Being a Driver/Guide in Ketchikan, Alaska is a great job, but like all jobs they can have their up and downs.  You can easily put in 10 hour days, and not have a day off for several weeks.  It’s busy, fun, challenging, and great all at the same time.  In Ketchikan, AK, theres only one 29-32 mile road (you might need to really measure it, because different people have different ideas for how long it is).  When making your way up to the north end of town you will come by Ward Cove, its beautiful, and the views are epic, but you’ll also run by a metal junk yard that just happens to be on the side of the road.  You will also notice and see the last remaining pulp mill owned by Louisiana-Pacific before they shut it down in 1997 to protect the Tongass National Forest, it’s one of the things we mention as tour guides when we make the drive to the north end of the island.  Ketchikan is beautiful and the people are friendly.  If you happen to be in this area go by Ward Cove, and then if you have the time, keep driving up to Harriet Hunt Lake.  There are some stunning views, and if you’re there during the right time of year, you may even run into a black bear!
