I don’t use tumblr much these days and I missed the actual anniversary, but Saturday was the 6-year anniversary of my Bee Movie stream. if you’ve ever wondered why Bee Movie is a meme, it’s because of me, and this post is where it started. I don’t know if I’ll ever accomplish anything else this significant with my life, but I can’t be too mad if the biggest thing I ever do is make millions and millions of people all much more aware of a bad Jerry Seinfeld movie, can I?

Finding out that Frances Dana Barker Gage, a white woman, rewrote Sojourner Truth’s famous speech to be more stereotypically “Southern slave” (complete with slurs and misspellings like dat, dere, dey) when Sojourner Truth was actually from New York and spoke only Dutch until she was almost ten and wouldn’t have actually sounded that way linguistically and decidedly did not use the phrase “Ain’t I A Woman?” at all is…whew. And on top of everything, she embellished details about Sojourner Truth’s life (like the number of children she had/how many of them were sold into slavery), wrote that ST said that she could take beatings like a man, and the reception of the speech in the room (she claims ST was called a n*gg*r, earlier accounts say the room was welcoming).

I like playing Magic: the Gathering, but it’s an expensive hobby to have, so I don’t get to play it that often, but it turns out I’m good enough at the new online version, Magic Arena, that I... don’t actually have to spend money on it

I played like 5 Pauper leagues today and I am in fact ahead in terms of in-game resources compared to when I started. I’m good enough that I gain in-game currency when I play the non-free-to-play modes. that’s a nice feeling!

I’ve noticed a lot of non-red band theatrical trailers for movies feature the word “shit” now and I feel like that wasn’t the case as early as a year ago. did the MPAA’s rules regarding what can appear in a green band trailer change?

and like to be clear there are exceptions to this going back years (I'm not going to take the time to thoroughly research this because I have better things to do but I know there are movies from several years ago with green band trailers that used the word "shit") but it seems far, far more common now than it did before. I've read something suggesting that the MPAA has had "one exception to this rule per year per studio" things, like allowing studios to have one film per year with a trailer longer than 2:30, so it's possible that there was also a similar rule regarding cursing that was rescinded? but, like, as a random example, I went back and watched the trailer to The Hangover and it has literally no foul language at all, and the trailers for both Anchorman movies collectively just have a single "dammit" in them. by comparison, for example, the "One Reason" trailer for A Star is Born features the phrase "full of shit" three times in a row. it seems apparent that the rules changed at some point, but I'm really curious how, when, and why these changes happened, and I can't find any sources on any of this.

if I had to guess, there's probably now a common sense rule of "if the contents of a trailer could appear in the movie it precedes without changing the rating, it's acceptable," but that's just a guess. I wish there were some official info out there.

speaking of English language remakes there has been literally zero news about JJ Abrams’ remake of Your Name in the last year and I’m really curious what that’ll be like. I think you could make something genuinely good out of it that would be worth existing if you change the character who lives in Tokyo in the original to a second or third generation American-Japanese immigrant. like you could say genuinely interesting things about the immigrant experience with that. you’d need a director who can tell that story authentically but it wouldn’t be a completely unnecessary retelling that way

also apparently there’s a remake of The Intouchables coming out starring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston, which... idk the original French version was pretty good but this doesn’t feel like a movie that needs an English language remake
