Burnout AU:

The Fire Prince is different than she remembers, barely an echo of himself. He moves as though he's treading deep waters. Sometimes, Katara feels like she's watching him through a fog.

After being exiled from the North for bloodbending an abuser—before facing Zhao and being thrown to the seas for Zuko to find—she'd heard the stories. Prince Zuko died as the Long Night began, caught in the explosion of the Yuurei. And yet, here he was, offering Katara passage to Omashu so she can reunite with her friends.

Reverse AU:

“Years ago, a spirit showed me a reality in which I was meant to be the Avatar,” Zuko's airbending Master said. “Kyoshi died a century earlier and the Tribes didn't join forces to make the world their hunting ground. The Cycle itself was different, too—elemental opposites didn't succeed one another. It was so marvelous, yet so strange. However, this is our reality, and you're the Avatar.”

Placing a tile on the board, Aang continued, “Perhaps if water wasn't the next element in our Cycle you'd get a free pass, but we're not so lucky. Everyone's out to kill you so the next Avatar will be born in the Water Tribes. If that happens, the world is doomed. So you better get this exercise right, Zuko, or Princess Creepy-Yet-Pretty's going to catch you. And this time, I don't think she'll hold back."

This only just clicked for me, but Law really said "give me Cora-san smiling while on fire," when getting his tattoo and not just an edgy looking heart 😭 The feathers on the bottom, heart surrounding the smile like Cora's coat, flames on top. Forever obsessed 😭😭😭

At the end of the day, I think Katara and A.ang ending up together depends pretty heavily on two factors:

A.ang never finding out that Katara used bloodbending on that guy in the Southern Raiders

Katara never finding out that A.ang picked his (at the time, at least) one-sided crush on Katara over mastering the Avatar State, ending the war as fast as possible, and rescuing Katara and everyone she loves from a century of mortal peril.

I may think one of these is a bit more egregious than the other, but the fact remains...they both have each other on a pedestal in some way, and they can't trust each other with the worst, most imperfect parts of themselves or they'll get knocked off of their own pedestal.

Meanwhile, onscreen, we see Katara witnessing Zuko at his worst (his betrayal in the S2 finale) and Zuko seeing Katara at her worst (bloodbending that guy) and...they still end up respecting and understanding each other as friends. They see each other at their worst and after that they're still willing to risk their lives for each other.

Just some food for thought.

Thinking about how Zuko wasn’t even phased by Katara’s impossible demands (reconquer Ba Sing Se, bring my mother back to life) at the beginning of The Southern Raiders, because he wasn’t deterred by Ozai’s impossible requirement to find the Avatar, either. But this time his insane level of dedication is actually aimed at someone who's worth it. 😭🌊❤️‍🔥

Something that is so very important to me is the idea that Bruce Wayne—not just Batman—is doing everything he can for Gotham. Like pouring his money into foundations and public programs and doing whatever the hell he can with his endless wealth because at his core Bruce wants to help Gotham. Give me Bruce Wayne who is doing more for Gotham than anybody else in the world and it still not being enough without Batman's help.

He’s essentially fighting a war on two completely different fronts.

That’s always how I’ve thought about it. It’s also a good rebuttal for critics who say he should stop beating up people and just do more charity/therapy. The whole reason he has to be Batman is because the money isn’t enough. He could sink the entire Wayne fortune and the profits of WE every year into the city and it still wouldn’t be enough. The same is true for for Batman — without Bruce Wayne’s access, intel, persona, etc — he’s limited significantly. He might be fine fighting lower level goons, but Batman on his own, without Bruce Wayne, will never truly be able to affect the big picture.

A lot of the things the writers (*cough cough* Bryke) do to invalidate zutara shippers also negatively impacts the complexity of the rest of the show imho. Like remember all the wonderful fanart of Zuko and Aang with their matching lightning scars? Remember how people thought it was cool that Azula had caused both of those injuries and Katara healed them? Remember when it got people talking about the parallels and narrative symmetry between Aang and Zuko? But no, they just had to remove Zuko's lightning scar in the movie because there can be absolutely no reminders of how crazy romantic the final agni kai scene was.

If you’re not a fan of the ship and prefer to see them with other characters, no hate whatsoever I respect and support it.

But to say theres no reason whatsoever why people might ship them together when fire/water, hero/villain, healer/wounded, enemies to lovers, etc all exist in such astronomical abundance in various media and fandoms across the world…now that seems a little unusual.

The amount of heated, real-world hate being generated about these imaginary character relationships is so ridiculous. Why not let everyone enjoy their own daydreams and fantasies in peace? Doesnt keep you from enjoying yours. Tsk tsk Uncle Iroh would be disappointed

Nah I’m not really into kataang and definitely prefer zutara, but idc if other people like it. And bryke’s comments were so out of line and rude. You made valid points and I agreed wholeheartedly with what you said, theres so much precedent that would obviously lead people to pairing katara and zuko that it’s silly to say it’s a ridiculous idea.

Just seen so many hate posts from all sides lately that it has me shaking my head because like you said, it’s a super obvious pairing even if it’s not canon. Like why spend so much time hating on someones elses fandom ship instead of loving your own? I tagged my post wrong so that was my bad, was meant ironically and done at work on a 5 min break so I wasn’t really paying much attention, no harm meant. I wasn’t “dictating how people should feel” by saying “man why cant we get along” any more than the people who say “liking xyz ship is bad and you are dumb if you support it”, which liberally exists (with very extreme, heated vitriol) in both tags. They express their anger and hate, i express my exasperation, we are all expressing our feelings which is both allowed and not a real problem. One persons hate isnt more important than another persons tolerance in regards to social expression, theyre pretty equal and necessary for a healthy ecosystem

Zutara? Kataang? Taang? Zutoph? Zukka? Tokka? Sokka x Boomerang? Aang x Cabbages? Ozai x Being A Rat Bastard? No problem, light work, I can find enjoyment in almost any ATLA ship because the joy comes from experiencing the love for the subject matter the fandom creators feel that theyre so generously choosing to share with the world.

HOWEVER — there is ONE (1) ship I CANNOT and WILL NOT EVER SUPPORT (ethically, morally, or spiritually) and that is Zuko x Being Suave. That man awkward as hell, he couldn’t smooth talk a stick of butter if he fell face first into a swimming pool of olive oil.

Hey gang, there's between 7,000 to 10,000 Zutara fics on fanfiction.net.

"But wait," you ask, "I went to check and I put in Zuko and Katara and pairing and it's only 1.7k?"

WRONG! Remember, SHIT IS OLD, YO. 😭🍿

The "Pairing" checkbox was implemented in the 2010s. All the Zutara fanfic written during the show and in the years immediately after it didn't have that. And it didn't get automatically added.

Back in the day, we old people would select the Characters A and B, then select Genre "Romance". That's where all the good 2000s and 2010s Zutara fanfic lives! I'm talking some stuff that is novel-length, beloved pairing classics, most of which will probably not be posted to AO3 anytime soon.

So if you only search by "Pairing" checkbox, you're going to get about 1.7k Zutara fics. But if you unselect that and choose the "Romance" genre, you'll get more than 7k. And if you include every genre then fanfics with Katara and Zuko as the primary characters is more than 10k.

There's so much more fanfic than you guys realize!! Like y'all probably haven't even read Stormbenders and omg the effect of that story on the shipdom in 2008 was seismic.

It's so fun. Unfortunately the UI for FF.net it's still pretty bad so you might want to just download the thing. But you guys are really missing out if you haven't gone to where most of the fanfic was when the show was airing. (The same is pretty much true of most fandoms from the 2000s.)

And this is coming from someone who started their 15 year fan career there, was a loyal patron, and only discovered the joys of ao3 in the last few years. Its so sad because their text to voice option is SO. NICE.

The beef i have with that app is unreal because I have known true love and lost it. Long ago, it worked amazing and everything was in harmony. Alas, the only clear and decisive Zuko ship that can ethically exist in my heart is platonic besties Zutoph due to The Water Tribe Dilemma. That, and Zuko x Honor.

He basically never lies, unless its maneuver to pull wool over opponents eyes and he is so pissed that he begins to tell stuff to support people worst opinions of him.

Like that we got such masterpieces as him telling Rosi that he will use Law like pig for slaughter (he took in Law because he is Doffy's mini me and immediately given position of heir, future "third corazon" on same level as his beloved brother) and spitting in Law face that he never cared about his brother and killing him was just a breakfast to him and didnt affect him at all and Rosi deserved it (he felt Rosi was only person who would love him for him because they are family and Rosi is from time before Doffy life dependent on ability to perform being a ruthless king, and Doffy loved him so much he turned other way on all evidence of Rosinante betrayal and his brothers execution is one of few times he hesitates before attacking and somber whole time).
