Winter has taken its toll on me lately.
53 days of negative temperatures couldn't stop my legs from pedaling, but I'm not ashamed to say that Nature beat my spirits.
Every time I went to go for a ride I looked at my camera - but instead of picking it up I just shook my head.
So today I bring you a photo set of the people I work with. These are the people who can sell you a bike, who can fix your bike, and who help make every day at the bike shop feel like a day well spent.

Do you remember your first parade?
Bodies drifting through bodies, and the unshakable feeling that the rest of the world had faded away.
The Stuporbowl is more parade than race, and for a day everything else disappears. Groups clump together and fall apart in an amorphous haze as they drift through the city.
Raucous parties morph into quiet spaces quickly and without warning as riders move through their routes.
You turn every corner with the unfettered anticipation that another party is waiting just after the bend, and, for once, you're right.

The Winter Lull
A thin veil of snow kisses the horizon and you stop on the trail to watch the sun go down. Heart pumping, lashes frozen, the crunch of snow beneath your boots, and looking over the Mississippi River you can see for miles.
On days like these it's hard to imagine any reason not to travel by bicycle, winter or otherwise. Legs never tired, hands never cold, and conversation never boring.
Somehow an ordinary bike ride becomes a winter parable for everything good and pure in the world, or maybe nothing quite that lofty - but close.
As the season goes on - and right now it feels endless - it's easy to fall into the winter lull. To forget about the magic of a perfect winter day.
Riding a bicycle is often an exercise in mindfulness, and that can apply most during winter. If you live outside the moment and yearn for summer, you will be let down. But if you exist in the winter - really inside of it - the world becomes beautiful again, and again, and again.
Look around. Take a breath.
Exhale.
Somewhere in the world scientists are trying to figure out how fun works.
I don't have the heart to tell them...
BIKEFUN Rider Profile - Ben!
As the mercury drops, many people purchase balaclavas to protect their faces from the freezing wind.
Ben is not one of those people.
After eating some pizza and chatting up the mayor, we took a few photos. Ben rocks his cycling gloves and backpack, but is otherwise in pretty standard walkin' around gear.
His single speed mountain bike with big fat tires and disc brakes is a nice compromise between winter commuter and trail bike, although it definitely leans towards the latter.
It seems that in times past Ben would have been a Viking, with a braided mead soaked beard, horned skull cap, and lust for destruction.
But since he only has 2/3 for now, Ben spends his days riding bikes and playing doom metal. Once he gets the cap we're all goners, but until then I'm glad to call Ben a friend.

But more importantly, she made this face while we made small talk.

One trick that winter bicyclists develop is the ability to dress so that you are appropriately cold as you leave the house. If you're not shivering a bit when you hop on the bike you'll overheat.
One layer too many and you're covered in a sheet of frozen sweat, one layer too few and you never warm up in the first place.
Like everything it's a balancing act.
The Picker Mittens aren't insulated particularly well and they always feel a little cold at first, even when temperatures skyrocket into the 20s.
They rely on windproof construction and heat reflection to keep your hands warm, but that means your hands have to get some blood pumping and do some of the work first.
I'm here to say this is a good thing. (Or, at least, it is for riding a bicycle in stupid cold weather).
One more layer and my hands would be sweating too much, one fewer and it's frostbite city. It's a balance.
Be cold for a few minutes until you're comfortable.
They do such a good job of heat reflection that if you have good circulation you won't want to take them out until it dips below 20. At that temperature you'll overheat almost immediately and your hands will be sweating. No fun.
They have reflective strips on both mittens, snot wipes on both thumbs, and, as an added bonus they look just like oven mitts.

BIKEFUN Rider Profile - Ani!
Fresh snow on the ground and it feels like I'm floating. A stark white tapestry spreads out in every direction, and when I slow down I see the painting pierced by my smiling, yellow friend.
Even in this 15 degree weather Ani is wearing minimal layers beneath her windproof jacket and pants. As we biked around the city she was perfectly comfortable, but stopping for photos proved chilling.
One winter lesson we've both learned is to dress light for the bike, and to bring extra layers when you plan to be standing around.
Although she owns a car, Ani much prefers biking for her transportation needs. She bikes to work, the grocery store, to church, to parties, and, occasionally, to the park for impromptu photo shoots.
One thing I'm drawn to about this ensemble is just how well Ani pulls off the high-visibility jacket.
In one part of my mind I'm aware that it's a safety measure, but I also tend to push that reaction away when struck by how well it fits and how natural it looks with Ani's personal style.
Another beautiful day in Minneapolis.

0 Degrees, 0 problems.
There's something magical about Minneapolis winters. It's zero degrees outside and the sun is shining, and on days like this it doesn't take much to remember why we love it here.
Snow has covered everything and the city is gleaming.
In one snowfall the city turned from a grey and dreary place to the winter playground I remember from my first winter here.
Get out and play!
