Ishimaru merely nodded at what he was saying, his thin frame shaking from both the pain and how close the other was to him as he grimaced and placed his hands on his legs. He could not understand why he was acting like this towards him either. No one else paid him any mind or would simply berate him further while he rested from similar incidents if they happened to find him. Someone never attempted to help him before.

He anxiously glanced towards his hand as he reached towards him again, hiding the injuries as he did not want him to see previous scars nor how thin he actually was. It would only cause unnecessary worry and he did not wish to have that when he was not that important of a person. Though what he did next made him blink in confusion, glancing between his hand and him for a moment before he cautiously took it. He… He called him by a nickname… What on earth?

“A-ah… H-he is merely m-my classmate… H-he does c-cause trouble on o-occasion but o-otherwise he is w-with some of t-the others… I-I… W-wha? W-what did you r-refer to me as? I-I… N-no one n-normally calls me t-that… I-I do not m-mind however… T-thank you… W-what should I-I refer to y-you as?”

“Ya can call me anythin’ you want to, sport.” He grinned, tugging lightly as he held out his other hand to hold the boy steady. “Most people call me unpleasant things, so I don’t really got a nickname.”

He gave his shoulder to the other to lean on, hoisting him up so that he does not stumble or fall. That certainly wouldn’t be good, Daiya thought.

He could tell from the stammers and the body language of the highschooler that he was a shy kid and probably never got help. That only made Daiya angrier, that delinquents would go for such a student. No real man aims for the weak.

He looked back down at the kid with overwhelming worry and concern, despite not having a good look at the injuries or realising how badly unkept Ishimaru was.

“So, how often does this happen? Like, with you getting assaulted and someone actually givin’ a shit about it? Because like, it doesn’t seem like it happens very often, and that’s like, really fucked. Maybe I should hang around ya more often.”

As he came to a stop, Daiya blinked in panic when the other grabbed him by the jacket. He heard the bag and it’s contents fall to the floor, and he almost felt bad, before his attention was brought back to his brother spitting and yelling in his face.

“M-Mondo, c-calm..” He managed to speak, as their similar pompadour styled hair brushed against each other from the closeness. “I don’t understand, Otouto. What do you mean by ‘dead’? Are you-”

His thoughts spiralled. Maybe he shouldn’t have gotten out of bed today. Was this even Mondo? He looked and acted the part, but this was just too weird. His brother would never do this to him - outside of play from when they were boys.

The taller man grasped at the other’s hands and pried them off.

“First off - stop that.” He cleared his throat and spoke up again, a more serious tone to his concerned voice. “Second off, calm down. It’s me, Daiya.. not some stranger coming to f-fight you.” His voice was shaking, still shocked from the response his little brother had.

“Third off - what the fuck is going on?”

Daiya was driving down the road he usually goes down, making his way to Hope’s Peak. It’s close to the time he usually visits his brother, every quarter of the year to be exact. It’s odd, though.

He woke up this morning with a chill. A chill he’s never experienced. Daiya didn’t think much of it though, even as he climbed on his motorcycle.

Now, as he was driving, however, he spots someone familiar out of the corner of his eye. Right there, in flesh, holding a brown bag with some edible contents, was Mondo Oowada.

Confused, and frankly concerned, he drove towards a curb and parked his bike, before running over to him.

“Oi-Oi! What are you doing? Aren’t you supposed to like, be in school?” He yelled. This would be embarrassing if he had the wrong person, but he was positive what he saw.

The hall monitor gazed at him with surprise as he heard that, fidgeting with his hands more as he glanced away. That would explain quite a lot. His classmate often spoke of his brother and his gang after all. Though he already knew of the Crazy Diamonds due to how often his father would speak of them on the rare chances he was home before he left for class. Why… Why was he being so kind to him? He could not understand it. 

The fact that he wished to assist him by dealing with those delinquents further puzzled him as well, shaking his head and gazing downwards. There was no need for him to do something like that. It was his duty to ensure a safe school environment and allowing those delinquents to stop him was not something he was going to allow regardless of how panicked they made him. He could not help but whimper as he tried to stand as well, the pain causing him to fall to his knees as he quivered. It appeared he would need assistance after all…

“A-ah!? I-I… O-oowada-kun often s-speaks of you… I-It is a p-pleasure to m-make your a-acquaintance… T-there is no n-need to use v-violence either… I-I will m-merely reprimand t-them much m-more cautiously… I-It is my d-duty to e-ensure a safe s-school environment a-after all… H-hmm? I-I… I-I am not t-that hurt… I-I will be-Ah! I-I believe I-I require a-assistance…”

“Oh, you know Monds? That’s cool, heh, I didn’t think he got along with people.”

He laughed, before reaching out a hand instinctively to check the bruises. He hoped the kid wouldn’t flinch, he tried to be as slow as possible. Daiya was no nurse, but he definitely knew his basics - and if the other couldn’t even stand, well.. that was bad.

He instead turned his hand over and stood up. Daiya wouldn’t and couldn’t just leave this poor kid alone in this school closet, that would be unmanly of him and very wrong.

“Here, take my hand. You look like a goddamn leaf in the wind, ‘Taka.”

He gently smiled at the boy. He knew his appearance and the whole ‘gang’ thing, was pretty scary, but he hoped Ishimaru would trust him, at least enough to let him do what Daiya thought was best for the other

He shook his head at his words, taking deep breaths as he tried to regain control of himself and raising a shaking hand to wipe at his pale face. It was rather shameful to be seen like this. He kept a wary gaze upon the other as he wrung his hands though, grimacing as he shifted to a more comfortable position. The wounds would bruise but other than that he should be alright. The delinquents had not held him long enough to do more than that after all.

He blinked in confusion as he heard the others words, properly looking at him for the first time. Goodness… He looked far too old to be part of the ones who had harmed him. Did that mean he was related to someone on the campus? He would have to check that. Though everything he was saying along with how he was looking at him was only puzzling him further. Who on earth was this man?

“A-ah… I-I… I-I will be a-alright… T-there is no n-need to do s-so… H-hmm? I-I… I-it is t-true that there a-are far more t-that cause s-such things than t-there used to b-be… I-I have s-seen it far t-too often… O-oh my… M-my apologies… I-I am K-kiyotaka Ishimaru… W-who might y-you be? I-I do not b-believe I have s-seen you before…”

“I’m Daiya, Daiya Oowada - I swung by to see my baby brother.” He replied, still looking worried. No one could recover that fast, even though he could tell the other was trying to act it.

“And, hey - y’know, if those guys try to do anything again, just.. I come around often, so I’ll fight them next time I see ‘em, ‘right? I’ll give ‘em a good scare at least.”

He gave the Oowada thumbs up with a grin and tilted his head.

“Besides me going to fight them, how badly hurt are you? Can you stand? I still think we should go to the nurse..”

He felt badly for coming so late to the situation, even if it was out of his control. He felt the need to protect this child, even though they just met. It’s not that he seems helpless... well, maybe a little. He feels responsible now, especially because he was sort of like that when he was a kid.

Maybe that’s why he’s blaming himself.

The hall monitor tensed as he heard a voice, gazing up to see what appeared to be another delinquent rush towards him. He scrambled away and quivered as he tried to keep away from him, winching at the pain as he did so and pressing himself against the wall as he looked towards him with terror in his crimson eyes. Had this person come to cause him further harm as well? He certainly looked like he might.

Though his words did confuse him and he slowly peered around his arms after some time, unsure what to say to him as he breathed heavily and sniffed. No one had ever come to assist him after all and he did not wish to worry anyone when this was something that did not concern them. He must look as spineless as he felt too from the tone of the other’s voice and how he was looking at him…

“AH!! N-no… P-please… D-do not h-harm me!! I-I did not m-mean to t-trouble you… I-I was only t-trying to e-enforce the r-rules… I-I… I-I will be a-alright though… D-do not be c-concerned…”

He paused, retracting his hand and crouching down to be on level with the kid. He placed a hand on the floor as to steady himself, and looked him down.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay. I’m not gonna harm ‘ya. You look like you’ve been ‘ta hell and back though, do you need me to get the nurse or somethin’...?”

Worry filled his gaze as he sighed. This was messed up, on so many different levels. So messed up, that he had to make a statement.

“Some punks need to learn not to mess with people. Sheesh, this is why I hate most of society nowadays.”

He smiled warmly at the other, but didn’t know the name of him yet. Weird, he should’ve asked immediately - but he was so concerned about his wellbeing he forgot to ask

“What’s your name?”

Ishimaru whimpered as he sat in the closet he had rushed into, his thin frame aching from the wounds those delinquents had made as he tried to calm his breathing. He had been scolding them lightly for smoking on school grounds when two of them had pinned him down while one proceeded to attack, managing to struggle out of their hold and escape by sheer luck.

The fact that he could not even do his duties without that occurring to him so frequently was shameful and only proved how much of a useless pathetic person he was. He trembled as he hugged his legs close in the small space, sniffing as he laid his head in his lap. Why did he have to be so utterly worthless?

As Daiya was walking around the campus to find his brother, a look of confusion struck his face as he noticed some tough looking delinquents passed by him. They appeared to be laughing and nudging each other and giving each other pats on the back with large obnoxious grins on their faces as they came across the corner.

Unsurprised, knowing how horrible this school could be, he paced himself quicker and turned that corner to find a cowering boy, appearing badly injured. That confusion changed into a look of shock and worry, and he rushed to the boy’s side.

“Holy shit, are you alright?” He exclaimed quietly as to not alert the jerks who did this, reaching out a hand to shake him lightly.
