B2B NE BOSTON HARBOR CRUISE FOR AUTISM

What: Join Bike to the Beach New England (B2BNE) to kick off our 2016 season with a private, two-hour harbor cruise on the Lexington!

When: Board the Lexington at 6:30 pm on Thursday, June 9th for a cruise from 7:00 - 9:00

Where: Board at Rowes Wharf (70 Rowes Wharf) in downtown Boston for a sunset cruise on the Boston Harbor

$40 for tickets until May 12

$50 for tickets from May 12 - May 26

Ticket sales close on Thursday, May 26

Music, apps and cash bar. All proceeds going to B2BNE beneficiaries, including Autism Speaks New England, Crossroads School and Bike Newport.

Volunteers Needed for our 2nd iCan Bike Camp Program

Bike to the Beach is excited to announce that we are expanding our partnership with iCan Shine. We are hosting our second iCan Bike program, May 30-June 4th.  We have partnered with the Mason Life Program,  an amazing post-secondary program for adults with disabilities at George Mason University.

The Mason Life iCan Bike camp is designed to teach their students to bike ride and to engage the general George Mason community as volunteers.  We believe that this is a fantastic opportunity for the George Mason Alpha Xi Delta Chapter to support their fellow students and have a 1-on-1 experience with students who are affected by autism. 

iCan Bike is a specialized instructional program that uses a fleet of adapted bicycles, and a trained staff to teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a bike. Approximately 80% of the people who participate in iCan Bike programs learn to ride a two-wheel bicycle independently. Graduates of the program will receive FREE registration to Bike to the Beach's Family Challenge Charity Ride, an 8-mile ride during the last portion of Bike to the Beach's 100-mile charity bike ride from Washington, DC to Dewey Beach, DE. 

We need Volunteers!   Each rider needs 1 to 2 volunteer “spotters” to guide them, encourage them, and facilitate their learning. If a “spotter” can attend all 5 days of camp, he/she will be able to work with the same rider for each of the 5 days and experience the thrill of giving the gift of riding a bike! 75 invigorating minutes per day.   If spotters cannot make it every day, they will still have a great time working with the riders.   It truly is a rewarding exercise and emotional experience  — all of our volunteers loved the camp we did in 2015.

On April 2nd, our Bike to the Beach New York Team brought in Autism Awareness Month with a party inside The Great Hall at the Gansevoort Hotel in Meatpacking, which is serviced by the Chester.  The event was a huge success!

On April 2nd, Bike to the Beach New England joined forces with the awesome men's lacrosse team at Boston University. The team, huge supporters of B2B NE with over 40 riders and volunteers in 2015, played Lehigh University at 12:30 this Saturday. 

They organized a pre-game tailgate and sold  t-shirts to raise funds for Bike to the Beach and autism awareness.

World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognized day on the 2nd of April every year, encouraging Member States of the United Nations to take measures to raise awareness about children with autism throughout the world. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution "62/139. World Autism Awareness Day", passed in council on November 1, 2007, and adopted on December 18, 2007. It was proposed by the United Nations representative from Qatar, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, Consort of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, and supported by all member states.

World Autism Day is also one of only four official health-specific UN Days. The day itself brings individual autism organizations together all around the world to aid in things like research, diagnoses, treatment, and overall awareness for those with the disorder.

The eighth annual World Autism Awareness Day was April 2, 2016. Every year, autism organizations around the world celebrate the day with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events.

World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD), observed on April 2, was adopted by the United Nations in 2007 to shine a bright light on autism as a growing global health priority.  Every year on World Autism Awareness Day, Autism Speaks celebrates its international “Light It Up Blue” campaign. Thousands of iconic landmarks, skyscrapers, schools, businesses and homes across the globe unite by shining bright blue lights in honor of the millions of individuals and families affected by autism. Individuals everywhere wear blue in honor of our community.

In 2016, people in 157 countries around the world participated in Light It Up Blue.  And, as you can see, the results were just staggering.

On Saturday, April 2, 2016, Bike to the Beach DC kick-off its fundraising season with a kick-off event at Soul Cycle! 

Our bikes SOLD OUT the week of the event, and we were able to turn this event into a great Fundraiser for our Bike to the Beach DC efforts. 

In all, we raised over $9,250 for our mission on Saturday.   What a great way to kick-off our 2015 Fundraising!!!

B2B Veterans Featured on Local News for Autism Awareness

Last week, we had two Bike to the Beach Veterans featured on Washington, DC FOX 5.  

Stuart Spielman, the Senior Policy Advisor and Counsel for Autism Speaks, and Bike to the Beach DC veteran, was interviewed by FOX 5's Shawn Yancy with his wife, Mona, and his son, Zack.

In addition,  Fox 5 featured Bike to the Beach veteran Allen Parvizian and his family on Good Day DC.  The Parvizian family, with Allen's son Cameron (who has autism and completed our B2BDC and B2B New England Rides in 2014) shared their story with Fox 5's Shawn Yancy, as well.  

In 2014, Allen's son Cameron, was the youngest cyclist to ever complete a B2B Century ride.

April 2nd -- Talisen Construction Lights It Up Blue 

Talisen, a long time partner and collaborator with Autism Speaks, has signed-up to sponsor our New York Bike to the Beach for autism on June 10, 2016.  

On World Autism Awareness Day, Talisen set out to ramp up our partnership  in an effort to raise awareness for Autism in their network.  Their first major effort included Light It Up Blue on April 2nd.  Last week Talisen had camera crews travel to all of our job sites around New York City to their crews showing their enthusiasm for the cause!

This June, we are excited to have them ride the 100 miles from downtown Manhattan to Westhampton in our 2016 Bike to the Beach event. Overall, their goal is to raise $25,000 to benefit Autism Speaks and several other local Autism charities.
