I'm 200 eps deep into Gintama and I'm so emotional about the "lesson" being time and time again that there is no lesson: that life is random and nonsensical and sometimes good things happen and sometimes bad things happen, that sometimes things are unfair and other times they are silly and more often than not you won't get an explanation.

Sometimes things will devastate you, sometimes you will lose, sometimes the thing you consider to be your purpose in life is taken from you for no reason, and you can scream and complain and ask "why is this happening to me" and then you just have to keep going. There's no use holding onto the past and to the mistakes you have made (because you will make mistakes) you can only make peace with yourself and where you are, find a new purpose and keep picking yourself up again and again and again .

There's no higher meaning so you have to make your own, create a code for yourself and live by it, celebrate the mundane and find meaning in your own way. But most of all remember that every single person you meet is also going through the same shit that you are, so be kind, treat everyone as an equal and do your best to help anyone that you can.

We are all just ships passing each other in the night, so leave your light on and don't walk away from somebody suffering. It's our bonds and community that keep us from despair.

after many years i have finally watched the final gintama movie and wow. wow. gintama you are a story about dudes getting stuck in a bathroom bc they ran outta toilet paper taking a shit. but you are also an anime about people. about humanity. about starting over. about trying again. about love. and the monster becoming human, because he is loved, and is capable of love, and that love can find him in the people he meets in edo who think this wavy-haired bum samurai is someone they'd lay their lives down to fight for and beside because he has done the same for them. my goodness. gintama drives me insane. it's such a beautiful story about starting over and enjoying your everyday life for its absurd moments, its quite moments, its painful moments. gintoki sakata i am so glad you lived. i am so glad you chose to keep living. i am so glad you were able to start over. i am so glad you found people to love and be loved by in return. never pay your rent pookie.

i absolutely love how gintama fansubbers never take much liberty with the dialogues while translating to make it easier for the audience to understand and instead opt to put an entire wall of text over the screen providing the context and explaining the linguistic and semantic nuance of the joke like yes tell me all about the causes and symptoms of this one penis infection so that i can understand the 5 very specific dick jokes gintoki is going to make simultaneously in a row in the next 60 seconds
