adaine and riz be like
āNo one wants Pinocchio to find where the white women are at more than meā is still the funniest sentence anyone has ever said on this planet Earth, and I will gladly die on that hill
i love how the plot of fantasy high progresses like
freshman year: solve the case of the missing girls
sophomore year: stop the rise of the nightmare king
junior year: kristen applebees is running for class president
i can't expand on it in any way that is eloquent but i think amethar rocks is the pinnacle of a tragic character. another lou wilson slam dunk of a guy whose clumsy lack of regality makes you chuckle until you remember that he wasn't supposed to be the king at all, and that he only found himself in this position because all four of his older sisters died during the war, and he was the only one left. his marriage is played for laughs until you realize that caramelinda was not supposed to be amethar's wife ā and if things had gone to plan, she would in fact be his sister-in-law. instead she's a poor facsimile of everything he lost along with his freedom and individuality. she doesn't love him; she doesn't even really like him.
"The Unfallen" is just another in amethar's long, rambling list of titles, but the longer you know amethar, the more you understand what it really is: a curse. amethar can't fall, but he can't stop those around him from dying. his sisters. his friends. his daughter, leaving in her absence a gaping wound where the curse has passed down and taken jet but left ruby, like father like daughter. sisters don't last long in amethar's life. and when he finds a man whom he loves like a brother, that man stabs him in the back. and still he can't help but live. you wonder sometimes just how much of that is will, and how much is a cruel sense of humor from whatever god or devil is responsible for amethar's life. make plans and the bulb laughs. when everything else is lost, and everyone he knows and loves has given up the ghost, only amethar will remain, because as caramelinda remarks in episode one, the battlefield is the only place where amethar has excelled. he doesn't know how to fall. but the last one standing isn't always the victor.
I donāt know if anyone will be able to do it like a starstruck odyssey did it. Being on your phone is 100% the right thing to do in a battle sometimes. Two guys make out sloppy style while the slugs in their brain duke it out. Entire armies of space ships are being put on hold by the psychic comms officer. Unhinged, all of it. No one is doing it like the Wurst
Totally forgot to post this the day after. Whoops.
obvious take but one of the many many things that makes leverage so enjoyable is that they lean in to the silly heist/action tropes with unapologetic glee. hedonistic even. like yes thanks i will clap and cackle with delight while eliot uses two (2) handguns to defeat like thirty bad guys with machine guns by doing a prolonged knee slide across a warehouse floor while somehow dodging all return fire, 10/10 no notes, two thousand more episodes please!
I love how in Leverage there's Nathan Ford, The Mastermind, who's very chess coded and own chessboards and makes lots of chess metaphors. And then, in one episode, we meet his father, and someone makes a chess related jab, to which Nate offhandedly remarks "No, dad's game is three card monte." And then the whole episode is themed around that.
This, to me, implies that in the leverage univere, super geniuses just pick one game and structure their whole schtick around that. There's a criminal mastermind out there who's schemes are based around bridge hands. Some super thief is out there robbing the london archives while making nonstop monopoly quips. Somewhere in the world there is the ringleader of a merry bands of crooks who's just really, really into uno.
Time to LOCK IN *falls asleep*
Iāve been waiting a year to post this
itās that time of year again
feel like psych deserves more credit for manifesting guest stars from almost every single property it referenced. i know plenty of shows have pop culture relevant guest stars but none of them make references that are so very specific and none of them get 99% of their references to actually show up. like psych will throw out a name exclusively for the bit and then an unpredictable number of episodes/seasons later that person will literally show up as murderer/victim/random extended family member of the week with no comment. george takei. william shatner. cybill shepherd from moonlighting. almost every single actor from the breakfast club (one of them recurring!). biff and doc brown from back to the future. dr frankenfurter himself. literally carey elwes. john cena??? john rhys davies. half the cast of twin peaks. the original "come on son" guy. alan ruck. michael rooker. both leads from she's all that. winston from ghostbusters. bud's mom from the cosby show. curt smith from tears for fears (who also sang live with them at an event, like, twice). they mentioned billy zane and val kilmer so many times per season that through sheer willpower they got billy zane and val kilmer to both show up in their series finale. those guys committed to their bits so hard that they ended their show with one of the most diversified and stacked cameo rosters in tv & thats honestly so funny and iconic of them
Van Chapman is so beautifully Siobhan and British, but I'm from middle of nowhere Appalachia and I've met so many women like her. Her name is something like Tammy, she's your gym teacher or lunch lady, she's intimidating, but she cares and helps. You know she smokes so much and loves her grandkids. You know Van and Bert would have silly little grandparent names
The crew of the Zephyr attempting to sleep the next night after witnessing:
Two men get grabbed out of the air and turned to salami in a wind fan by Maxwell (YOU ARE MEAT!!)
Wealwell Exorcist vomiting for about a minute straight.
Van's arm spitting an akira/venom monster out to patch a balloon.
Monty ride a baby T-Rex into and out of battle.
The Bank Of Fehujar's ship falling from the sky. After calling retreat.
Pappy shooting at least three men off the edge with Wealwell Stance Power.
Dog aoli vomit.
The crew screaming and hollering YOU ARE MEAT in victory over the edge of the ship.
He perfectly put into words what I've been thinking for so long
meanwhile, Siobhan, seeing the entire labyrinth while she's walking through it:
My favorite Fantasy High battle every season is the one where Adaine is off to the side having a totally separate encounter than everyone else.
Getting mauled by a werewolf in Black Pit while everyone else fights zombies.
Getting dragged around like a ragdoll during Row and Ruction and resisting dominating spells while everyone else fights Whitclaw
Getting nearly downed in one turn by Fabian during Baron's Game while no one else knows what's even happening.
Peak cinema
