The Force with be with you, always
Today I read that Daniel Fleetwood passed away, just a few days after Disney/Lucasfilm and JJ Abrams granted his dying wish to see Star Wars The Force Awakens.
Whilst a sadness fell upon fans worldwide, there is a great sense of pride in knowing that wishes can come true.
Star Wars fandom and social media provided the impetus for the movie makers to grant that wish, even though the movie is shrouded in secrecy.
Social media has itâs downsides and I realise that not everyone is a fan, but I think they are doing it wrong. Social Media can work in positive ways, like raising awareness, being a force for change.Â
If you use it in a positive way, positive things will happen. If you post, make sure it is something that you want the world to read, then you have no need to do so privately. Whilst the written word can often be misconstrued, you need to read it with positivity too.Â
Daniels campaign â#ForceForDaniel took hold fast as millions of Twitter-using Star Wars fans retweeted his story. Cast members also stood with fans, asking for his wish to be granted. There was no negativity, only love. Love for a man whom none of us knew, but we felt a connection with. He is a fan, just like the rest of us, if he could have sat in a cinema on December 18th, he would have loved to but he couldnât, and we all wanted him to see the movie.Â
Less than a week ago JJ Abrams made the call himself, invitied Daniel and his wife to a private screening of the rough cut.
Daniel got his wish and saw Star Wars The Force Awakens. He didnât come home and blow the ending, he didnât take to twitter and tell us all about it, he saw it, he got his wish and being a Star Wars fan, he didnât want to take that excitement away from anyone else.
I am proud to be a Star Wars fan, a lifelong Star Wars fan. Star Wars fandom is more than just loving a franchise,so much more. Star Wars fandom is about acceptance, it is about stomping out bullying, it is about granting wishes, it is about stormtroopers visiting sick kids in hospitals, it is about supporting communities, it is about strong role models, Â it is about giving kids the courage to be who they want to be, it is about friendship, it is about support, it is about love.
A passion for anything is something to be proud of. Never let anyone tell you it is less than that. Never be afraid to be who you really are. As Daniel and his family will tell you, life is short and unbelievably precious. Donât waste it being scared to be yourself. Donât live a life that makes you unhappy, live the one that makes you smile everyday. Donât be negative, negativity eats away at you. Donât hold on to grudges.
Be grateful for those that you love, be grateful for all that you have, be passionate about whatever it is that fills your heart with joy and excitement.
Daniel enjoyed every last minute of his life, and so should you.
Think about it .....
.. and May The Force Be With YouÂ
