i will also say though that it cracks me up that st vincent also got a songwriting credit on déjà vu because of this whole situation. what are her thoughts on all of this? imagine writing a classic pop song with taylor swift and then suddenly your name is attached to a completely unrelated song because a teenager was inspired by you. what a bizarre place to be lol

For the longest time (like 5 years now) I fully believed that the line in Sparrow by St Vincent was:

“And there, calling Maria…”

As opposed to:

“And they’re calling Maria,”

Which made the song more suspenseful to me? Like in my head it’s “na pale, akiita Maria” and not “na wanamwita Maria” which:

1. Made me think it was a continuation of the list of birds, except that this was a bird our narrator was refusing to name (and instead simply giving us the actions this bird is taking)

2. Made me think that it was singular and not plural (see number 1)

3. Made the song more suspenseful and haunting for me! “Which subject is this you’re introducing by action and not by name, St Vincent???”

4. Made me think “ohhh so the rest of the birds are ignoring the danger in different ways but this particular one is praying about it?”

5. Made me wonder if the trailing off was to leave us wondering how useful the praying was, as compared to the gathering of branches (Finch) and the flapping around as if not prey (Sparrow)

Basically it made me think a lot of things, which now have sort of… been debunked by my learning the intended lyrics. But like Mitski and The Deal, I will acknowledge and appreciate the text as it is but continue building on the misinterpretation of it which led to such fun and wonder!

I literally cannot even EXPLAIN how this song makes me feel OUGH its just so good THIS WHOLE ALBUM IS GOOD I LOVE ALL BORN SCREAMING “I’m at the back of my head watching my life happening. Watching the sink filling red and I’m not stopping it.” hits so hard im genuinely sobbing and crying and throwing up meeee😭💔🥀😭💔🥹😭🥀😭🥹😭🥀💔🥹😭💔🥀😭🥹💔🥀 i love the guitar solo near the end OUGHGH… it makes me feel like im spinning until im dizzy
