tee really got me thinking abt how kaidan really spends so much of his time acclimating tali, garrus, and liara to the sr1′s crew. that’s his role as a staff lieutenant, yes, but it’s also because as a human biotic, he knows what it feels like to feel so alienated, to be othered simply for just existing, even with the presence of a common goal or duty.
new oc promo under the cut ! now it’s bedtime hehe
can u tell i’ve been inspired by surrealism and a bit of horror
hi besties, working out a new url for my old multi which i’m archiving. def keeping my main oc on his own so i’ll need a url for him too, hehe. more to come later today
Nobody died.
I could shoot someone if it’d make you feel better.
Nah, I’m good.
Q. @turianrebel: "figured we should stop drinking and start... i don't know. being somewhat productive with our free time?" garrus gestures to the exterior of the armax arsenal, then bumps into kaidan's shoulder. "are you up for it?" he offers a turian smile and then gives kaidan's temple a gentle nudge with his nose. "we could use some practice, working together again. it's been a while. let's see how well you hold up."
“ somewhat productive ? i, and several galactic unions, would argue that shore leave is a requirement for any galaxy-saving marines. ” kaidan replies with a smirk, gently prodding garrus with a familiar brand of sarcasm. fighting against killer ai bots didn’t exactly spell out vacation for him. sightseeing, movie watching, fine dining, he found himself drawn to the more mundane aspects of interplanetary travel. the citadel, despite the number of times he had been on-board, still felt so alien to him.
before he can suggest otherwise, garrus closes the distance, ghosting kaidan’s skin with a slightest of touches. what a tease. kaidan’s arm instinctively reaches forward, hand soon affixed at the back of garrus’ head. his neck craning upwards, brown eyes meet blue for a moment. a rare confidence embeds itself into his movements. maybe wearing that luxe asari cologne was the right move for tonight. pulling himself upwards, kaidan closes his eyes as his lips meet garrus’, a soft kiss bequeathed before he leans back. “ mmm... you make a convincing argument, vakarian. just remember you’re playing with a spectre. ”
flirtations met and alenko now satisfied with himself, he rises, straightening out the wrinkles in his alliance blues. “ i’ll lift ‘em, you shoot ‘em. my barriers’ll make sure to protect the other half of that handsome face. ”

❝ ARE YOU SUGGESTING we end our drinking and … what’s the phrase … run the town ? ❞ close , but not QUITE . at least he’s trying . ❝ i’m interested . it’s been a while since i actually went for a walk around the place , especially post-sovereign . some places have changed quite a bit . ❞ garrus finishes his drink and pays for both of them — — whatever’s left of his vigilante money comes in handy for moments like this . ❝ you never visited the citadel before shepard , right ? showing up , hunting down saren … that was your first time ? ❞ 𝚑𝚎 𝚊𝚋𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚘𝚗𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚋𝚊𝚛 , guiding kaidan away and back out into the semi-crowded wards . though the turian certainly feels the affect of the alcohol the longer he stands , he’s comfortable walking around . maybe he bumps into kaidan once or twice , but is that garrus being TIPSY , or hidden flirtation ? done on purpose ? ❝ imagine having to be an officer in this place . too much ground to cover . ❞
paint the town, kaidan internally corrects garrus with a chuckle. with garrus paying for their drinks and leading the way out, no need for a human language lesson. “ yeah, that was my first time. explored the presidium a bit after i checked out of huerta. ” as they exit the bar, his companion’s steps ever so wobbly, kaidan can’t help but feel hyperaware of each brush, each momentary contact. it’s not something he’s used to, though not something was was opposed to either. “ i’ve learned that time and distance don’t mean anything when you’re with good company. ” a pause, he looks up at garrus for a moment. the last time they walked together like this, alone, they were new comrades, walking on eggshells as they got to know one another. it was just a few years back, but it felt like a lifetime ago. less alcohol involved, though they probably needed it more back then. “ any idea of where we should go first, officer ? ”
𝑻𝑼𝑹𝑰𝑨𝑵𝑹𝑬𝑩𝑬𝑳. garrus vakarian.
MAYBE BEFORE , garrus would have replied with playfully puffed-up words , try and impress kaidan with facts and legends about his stint on omega ( all the stories ; liara had already brought a few to his attention , trying to verify their veracity ) . maybe before he’d have leaned back , proud , acting casual about the whole ordeal as if it DIDN’T affect him like it does . but with kaidan , now ? here ? the two of them are alone , and there’s a camaraderie between them that drags the turian into true honesty . arrogance doesn’t suit this time of war . ❝ 𝚠𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚍𝚒𝚍 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛 ? ❞ he chooses to ask , eyeing kaidan as he sips his drink . ❝ sorry about the emails . i wanted to … truly disappear , and you can’t very well do that if the alliance previews your messages . figured you’d go off and do some good , too . you didn’t need me . ❞ it’s not a NEGATIVE remark — — in fact , 𝚒𝚝'𝚜 𝚖𝚎𝚊𝚗𝚝 𝚊𝚜 𝚊 𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚙𝚕𝚒𝚖𝚎𝚗𝚝 . garrus knows his ally’s strength , his capabilities . he didn’t need a washed-up c-sec officer tying him down . ❝ as far as i’m aware , you did pretty well during those two years . correct me if i’m wrong . ❞
it’s somewhat unexpected, the identifiable melancholy at the base of garrus’ statement. kaidan had been so used to the sarcasm, the infallible bravado, that such vulnerability caught him off-guard. if anything, he understood those sentiments only too well: wanting to disappear, losing so many people in one fell swoop, it was like rebuilding after jump zero all over again. still, his throat is burning and times are good now. he skirts around his own contemplation, a warm smile offered to garrus. “ might’ve gotten a promotion or two, but that doesn’t compare to you. you’re practically a legend in the terminus systems now. gotta read the stories people still tell about you. ” even if the blue suns touted their execution of archangel as their crowning achievement on omega, the people still saw him everywhere. archangel was hope, even in light of cerberus occupation, a coming dawn encroaching upon the darkened station. “ if you ever want to disappear again, give me a call. a biotic barrier would do wonders at protecting the other half of your face. ” he flicks his wrist, a ring of biotic energy swirling around his hand for a mere moment before disappearing. a sigh before he speaks again, a tell that alenko was going serious for just another moment. “ i was drifting after we lost the first normandy. i’m just glad i’ve found shore again. ”
❛ for what it’s worth, i really am sorry. ❜
❝ THANKS , KAIDAN . ❞ garrus adjusts in the awkward little chair at kaidan’s bedside . it’s pretty damn clear seats like this weren’t made to fit turians , probably made more for the human and salarian doctors running about . still , garrus is perched there , leaned up against the angled cot , deep in conversation with his injured friend . it’s been a while since he visited huerta . ❝ and i’m sorry about earth . both planets are getting decimated , i’m sure . ❞ the turian releases a heavy sigh , his mind on 𝚙𝚊𝚕𝚊𝚟𝚎𝚗 and his people . he cants forward a little and studies kaidan’s bruised face , a clear frown expressed with garrus’s mandibles . ❝ i hope we both get to see our homes again one day . maybe streets can be REBUILT . buildings , too . and as long as you and i are still kicking — ❞ garrus gingerly bumps kaidan’s arm , careful not to cause any pain , ❝ — the reapers better watch out . heal up soon , alenko . you’re needed out there . ❞

things that will always be sexy: kaidan erecting a barrier to protect his gun-wielding significant other while they shoot the hell out of some enemies
𝑬𝑽𝑬𝑹𝑾𝑨𝑹. claire shepard.
OUCH. kaidan’s always been quick on the draw wit sharpened by a life of hardship. he’s never given shepard an inch, even at her most stubborn moments. in the past, her superiors had always lamented her poor attitude, her readiness to fuss and fight. they’d usually recommended pairing her with someone who’d reduce some of those caustic impulses. that someone had been kaidan alenko, it seems. to this day she hates that they weren’t wrong.
she digs through her mental vault for a snappy comeback, something slick to say that’d earn a snort from vega. but he’s very pointedly looking anywhere but at either of them and her search is coming up dry. damn it. shepard sighs, leans back into her seat eyes forward and focused on the pneumatic door in front of her. a bit of atmospheric turbulence jostles her legs, accustomed to solid ground during her six months of incarceration. she should be happy to be back in action, but any joy she might get from flying is SUCKED out of the moment like air from a punctured bulkhead.
“ good idea. not much oxygen where we’re going. ”
the rest of their ride is uncomfortable at best. the tension is different from their last time flying together, not treading the line of treason nor directly life-threatening. for the moment, whilst the reapers laid waste to human civilization, their friends, their families, they were safe within the confines of the shuttle. the quiet gives kaidan several moments for reflection as their interactions, past and present, replay in his mind: his response was emotional, juvenile, he knows that. technically, as her superior in the chain of alliance command, as james’ superior, he’s ought to show a bit more tact. there’s a moment where he thinks to apologize, but logic dictates that he’s in the right. if anything, he won’t antagonize the situation any further.
when the shuttle doors open, claire leading the trio out onto the crimson surface of mars, it’s almost as if they’ve traveled back to three years ago. she takes point, without missing a beat, and he’s right behind her. this nostalgia doesn’t feel all that good, especially upon encountering cerberus troops. with multiple vehicles, they’ve absolutely arrived in force.
there’s no way she would’ve known, kaidan sure the alliance brass was especially secure with handling claire. yet, there’s the inkling feeling that there was more going on than any of them realized, and he hated being left in the dark. “ cerberus is here while earth is burning, seems pretty backwards of a pro-human org. ” kaidan states rather dejectedly, shooting a glance over to his commander. “ i half-expected these troops to at least greet us, not shoot us outright. did you piss off their boss when you quit ? ”

❝ THAT’S A COMPLIMENT. – I THINK. ❞ comparison to higher officers of the republic military is something alike being compared to champions. once before, they had been enlaced so deeply into these ranks, however now the two shared an experienced outlook upon their home. though a planet’s agony deeply resounded in her lungs, a smile arose followed by an airy laugh. ❝ I HAVEN’T MET HIM, THAT MUCH, REALLY. – IF WE SEE HIM, I’LL TELL YOU. ❞ kinship is found in the wounds they bare, the bleeding power of her own cosmic ache, it pulls him in.
“ i’ll hold you to it. granted, with the state of... everything, really, we should expect a meeting with him at some point. ” kaidan continues with a slight smile gracing his lips, a single eyebrow raising up at the statement. the last jedi in the known galaxy, traipsing about republic space and righting wrongs, it was only a matter of time until they attracted even more attention. beyond the exchange, the sith, bounty hunters, and all others currently pursuing them. to join her on this quest seemed foolhardy at best, especially for a washed-up apprentice, but something whispered in his skull, compelled him forward. or, maybe it was the possibility to finally exact some good into this dark galaxy. “ what’s next on our agenda ? can’t imagine we want to linger here too long. ”
