I’m an artist from Chicago, IL who takes photos of things and makes them gloomy. I also write music from time to time and do writing and creative design for projects, and manage social media accounts on the side.

I have a Neocities that will function as a future online creations/projects portfolio, as well as a carrd that links to the projects and groups I currently partake in. it also has links to anything “official” by me (if I can make anything official to begin with). here’s the link to the neocities site.

glass beach - "marrow"

no, this is not a real album by them, and all of this art (besides some of the fonts and the abyss angel in the bottom right corner of the tracklist, which was drawn by @daxe) is done by me! explanation below!

this idea originally came to me from a dream, where glass beach released a limited run physical only (no digital copies available) 5 track EP. they were mostly long, ambient and noise pieces that had jazz and prog influences scattered throughout them. in total, if memory serves me right, it was around a bit over an hour in length. the album art is a direct replica of what I saw in the dream, it mostly being water with the occasional light and reflections. I decide to turn this into creative design practice, as I thought it was a cool idea. I took photography and digital art I made and had around that likely wouldn't be used in a while. instead of coming up with song titles, I chose to turn it into a compilation record of b-sides and covers. the title "marrow" is taken from @glass--beach's upload of the cut track "bodywithoutorgans", which had the release titled as such. I thought it ruled, and decided to use that instead of using the title it had in the dream, which was actually self-titled.

i like that one a lot. there's a lot of very different versions, here is one of them. never fit into the tracklist, never felt finished, probably never will be "finished". its not really breakcore either. i probably said it was before but i just say shit sometimes

What is this about the tumblr staff wanting to sell art data to midjourney?

An ex-colleague of mine mentioned yesterday that there may be contacts between Automattic and midjourney in that direction, but nothing is public yet and I don't have any more info. They probably won't have anything specific to share either, since they left the company weeks ago too. That being said:

I have no reason to doubt my ex-coworker word, they are a trustworthy person.

Tumblr's CEO has been absurdly enthusiastic (comically, even) about AI, and is a big fan of LLMs and 'AI' companies.

A deal with midjourney could solve tumblr financial issues (not the same company, but openAi is paying up to 5 million/year to news companies to use their content as training data... tumblr generates several orders of magnitude more content than any newspaper or any media company and it only would need a 20 to 30 million per year deal to be profitable)

So I don't have any extra info yet, but I'm keeping my ears open.

This may be pure chance and coincidence, and it's not he is in a position to be able to talk about anything, but seeing prominent staff members announcing they are moving their original photography out of tumblr just two weeks ago seems a pretty significant cue of shit to be about to hit the fan.

Just tested. It’s possible to swap out pictures on already-published posts. So in that case, a solution:

Nightshade your photo posts now.

Even if you don’t post your own art anymore, go back to your old stuff and watermark it.

Do it ASAP, before the deal goes through and the scraping begins.

This will not only protect your art, but has the opportunity to fuck over this deal on a pretty large scale. The more of these posts that are glazed or poisoned, the less valuable this deal becomes for tumblr and midjourney.

Hate to always be the one saying this, but:

FOSTA/SESTA hasn't gone away. Credit card companies are still reluctant or completely unwilling to do business with adult content providers. The app store is still a bitch. Ads are still a necessary part of the website's revenue stream.

People don't seem to understand that Twitter being able to semi-openly host explicit porn, despite being so huge, is an act of fucking wizardry. It's unclear why Twitter gets such wildly preferential treatment from these entities (especially now) but the fact remains that it is preferential treatment. Not just any website can do that.

If Tumblr's ownership (not @staff mind you, the actual owners) was confident this website could be fully financially supported on subscriptions/post+ there might be a shred of a chance that we could get porn back, but people are EXTREMELY hostile to Tumblr's efforts to 'be a profitable business,' so why would they expect that to work?

Yes, the NSFW policy could be hugely improved. It needs to be more clear and consistent. But, for the record, it's fairly obvious that the inconsistency and vagueness are at least partially because A. the moderation is almost entirely automated and B. staff genuinely wants to give us wiggle room to post lewd shit while giving themselves plausible deniability

If you want porn back, stop talking to staff and start talking to your congressmen.
