I cried a litte last night. Bowie meant a lot to me. I’m not special in this, but I’d like to share my thoughts on the man…*foul language ahead* To say he merely challenged the way we thought about rock and roll, music, and art would be too little. He paved roads for us, he built bridges for us, he taught us how to make fire. New forms, new ideas, new characters… I’ve listened to his arrangements, his chord changes, his key changes, his lyrics, his passion over and over and over again. Each and every time I listen, I think “How the fuck did he come up with this??!” Listen to Rock and Roll Suicide, try not to cry, and then try to learn it. You’ll see what I mean. When he worked with another artist, he helped them generate some of their most revered work - Transformer by Lou Reed, Lust for Life by Iggy Pop, All the Young Dudes by Mott the Hoople, Queen’s UNDER PRESSURE? Come the fuck on... When I think about myself as artist, I’ve always used him as my gold standard. I know I will never come close to his talent, his magic. Humility was what made him great, and so i’ve got to meditate on this a while. I’ll never make the strides he made, but I’ll claw and scratch for every inch I can. I think this interview encapsulates him as human, which is why I love it. David Bowie wasn’t the fucking Goblin King or Ziggy Stardust. He was much much more than that. He was an amazing human being who created music and art that kicked us in the gut and moved us forward. He was fearless. We lost more than a legend today. We'll miss you, Mr. Bowie. -Andrew
